| no partners | | I decided to hike to a few new peaks - places I've never been before. I found 4 numbered peaks that were each within 1/4 mile from the Box Camp trail and plotted a route. My plan was to attempt 3 of the peaks, but because time allowed it, I was able to make it to all 4 in a single day.
Peak 7981 - It was only 0.2 miles from the Box Camp trail to the summit of this peak. Getting up I needed to hike around a lot of small dead pines. The ground had a lot of burned wood but I was able to step over it. I found a fire ring about 90% of the way to the peak. The peak was quite nice with a lot of open areas and without thick brush. I left a stack of rocks at the peak. I would recommend this peak if you don't mind a short hike through burned trees and/or walking over some deadfall.
Peak 7914 - It SUCKED mainly because of the New Mexico Locust thorned trees all over the place near the very top. Depending on which was you go, this peak is 1/3 to 1/2 mile from the Box Camp trail. The first part of the climb was fairly easy without a lot of brush to dodge. But, as you get closer to the peak, the brush seems to get thicker. I was able to step on the small or dead trees to clear a path to the top. I had a jar on me, and decided to leave a registry here. Maybe it will get one signature in 10 years. I would go back there someday with a machete or cutters and blaze a better path. It would only take a few hours to blaze a clear path to the summit. On a good note, there's only about 500-600 feet of this stuff. Once you're out of it, the hike is much easier.
Peak 7455 - This peak was MUCH better than the last one. I took the Box Camp trail to the side of the peak. The trail took care of some of the climbing. I found a rocky area that was pretty clear and it looked like it went most of the way to the summit. It was steep but not dangerous. I took this route and eventually made it to the top. The summit was nice, with 2 big oak trees and some manzanita and a lot of open space. There was a fire ring on the South side of the peak. It would be possible to camp here and fairly easy to get to since the summit is only 500 feet off the Box Camp trail. I took another route down since there were multiple good routes to this summit. I would rank this peak as 2nd best of the day.
Peak 7523 - To get to this peak, I needed to take a West branch of the Box Camp trail toward Box Spring. After getting down to the saddle East of Peak 7523, I could see a clearing or possibly an animal trail heading up South of the ridge. I followed this for a while and then had to cut to the ridgeline. I needed to weave through some brush and rocky sections but eventually made it to the top. The peak had an open rocky area. There were a few trees and bushes nearby for shade. There were some nice views of the top of Mt Lemmon from here. The summit is roughly 1,000 feet from the Box Camp trail. I would rank this as the best peak of the day! Of the 4 peaks, I'd recommend this one before the others. There's also a nice canyon area that you will cross before getting to the saddle that provides some shade and possibly some water, depending on the time of year. I didn't see any water there today.
