We ran into some confusion trying to get to the trail head from Hilton Ranch Rd. but then realized there was private property in the way. Then, we went over to Empire Ranch Road and had to do some analysis while driving. We ended up getting to the trailhead very late, after 11 am. The drive from Rt 83 to the trailhead was 20.5 miles but took us about 2 hours because of the bad condition of the road. 4x4 was required for the last 4 miles of road. We needed to move some larger rocks out of the road to pass by. On the way up, we started in the wash which had some nice shade and cliffs around us. Getting out of the wash and onto the main range was a bit messy and required some thick bushwhack. After getting on the ridge, we found a use trail which took us to the very top. The trail was very overgrown and we needed to do some trimming in some areas to avoid getting scratched up. The use trail was quite rocky and in many places it felt like a bushwhack. It was a long and difficult climb because of the condition of the trail. We eventually made it to the top and saw some nice views in many directions. There was a jar which contained a registry at the top which we signed. There was some wind and the temp felt just like the forecast of 56 F. We decided we would skip hiking French Joe today and come back a different time for that. We just didn't have enough time to get down before dark. Had we started earlier and had better directions to the trailhead, we could have had time to reach both summits. We followed the same route down except skipped going into the canyon. We were in darkness for the last hour or so, but had headlamps. We basically took the ridgeline down and then went North to run into the road where we were parked at.
