| no partners | | After hiking to North Mountain and Shaw Butte, I decided there was time to do one last hike for the day, and I chose this one. It was all trail, although the trail was not marked. I parked near the East end of Estrella Rd. There were some residences here but I saw other cars parked here and they seemed to be there to access the trails. There was a trail heading up to a low saddle and then around to San Juan Lookout. It would have been possible to drive up to San Juan lookout but I didn't want to deal with traffic. I found it easier just to hike up from the road which only took 10-15 minutes extra anyway.
First I hiked to San Juan lookout and there was a nice stone structure that was used as a resting area and it also provided some shade. The main trails headed North and East but there was an unmarked spur trail starting near the stone structure heading West. This is the trail that eventually goes to San Juan Hill. The trail basically followed the ridgeline with a lot of ups and downs. On the top of San Juan hill, I had good views including the Estrella mountain range, highway 202, some farm land to the West and the surrounding area. There was a registry at the top which I signed.
On the way down, I took an unmarked trail that went down North of the ridgeline. When I got lower in elevation, I saw two coyotes that crossed the trail about 50 feet in front of me. They didn't run from me, but they just kept on walking across the trail and then up the mountain. I took this unmarked trail back to the spur trail and then down to Estrella road where I parked.
