This was a hike to the summit of Cache Peak (elevation of 10,339 feet and prominence of 4,459 feet), the highpoint of Cassia (pronounced CASH-uh) County, Idaho. Cache Peak is in southern Idaho, about 50 miles from Twin Falls.

Cache Peak is in the Albion Mountains, and it is the highpoint of the range. Cache Peak is near the Independence Lakes and the famed City of Rocks National Reserve, aka Silent City of Rocks, which is a rock climbing mecca.

I drove in from the south, and it took about an hour off pavement to where I parked. I intended to drive about 1.5 miles further, but the road got a bit rough and I wasn't sure that my rental was up to the task of continuing onward. I figured that it would be best to play it safe and add about 3 additional miles to my hike. Many crossover SUV's could have driven the 1.5 miles though.

I hiked 3.5 miles to the end of the road. There were some sections in the last 2 miles of the road that required a high clearance 4WD vehicle, but most of this 2 miles would have been easy driving.

Once I left the road I took a good trail up to a saddle between Cache Peak and Mount Independence. I then went off-trail up to the summit. The off-trail was open in some places, but in other places it was light bushwhacking with a bit of rock scrambling thrown in for good measure. It was a bit time consuming finding ways through the brush.

It was very, very windy on the hike and due to the wind I did not stay too long at the summit, which had some great views. Plus there was a forecast for storms and I wanted to get down from the summit before any storms materialized. On the way up I stopped to check radar and it looked like any storms would be to the NW of the peak, but I did not want to take any chances.

On the hike back the skies looked iffy, but it never rained and I never saw any lightning.

The hike was tougher than I anticipated, but I am glad that I did it. If I was to hike this again I would probably hike in from the north, which would take you by the Independence Lakes.
