This time of year permits from recreation.gov are required, and the cost of the permit is a whopping $1.00. There were several people out doing the hike, but it wasn't crazy overcrowded or anything like that -- so the permit system seems to work.
The first couple of miles of the hike are forested, with a decent amount of elevation gain. Then the trail flattens out for a bit before steepening again. It was a steep hike, but almost all class 1.
Once we got to the rim of the volcano, we did a CCW loop around the caldera, hitting the highpoint along the way.
It was really cold and windy around the summit, and I was glad to have some layers to wear.
This hike was an amazing experience and it was better than I thought that it would be. |
