Bonneville Peak is the highpoint of the Portneuf Mountains and it is in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
My Trailhead for the hike was the Pebble Creek Ski Area.
I hiked up on some service roads in the ski area for about 2.65 miles until the road ended. The roads are closed to vehicular traffic, and are steep with lots of switchbacks. There was a building at the end of the road, and from the building I hiked off-trail up a steep slope, gaining 500 feet of elevation in about 1/3 mile. There was a use trail that was helpful to follow.
After climbing up the slope I was on a plateau and I was about 1/2 mile north of the summit. I hiked along the plateau to the summit, gaining 200 or so in the 1/2 mile. There were nice 360 degree views at the summit.
I returned the way that I came. |
