This was a hike to the summit of Eagle Cap (elevation of 9,572 feet and prominence of 1,212 feet), the highpoint of Union County in NE Oregon. Eagle Cap is in the beautiful and rugged Wallowa Mountains, which (with good reason) are often referred to as the "Alps of Oregon".

I started and ended the hike at the Two Pan Trailhead. I started on East Fork Lostine Trail #1662, and went about 7 miles on this trail. I then went on 3 other trails to get to the summit: Ivan Carper Trail #1661, East Eagle Trail #1910, and the Eagle Cap Summit Trail. All trails are well maintained and are easy to follow. It wasn't an easy hike, but it was class 1 all the way.

Views were great most of the way. Most of the elevation gain was in the first couple of miles and in the last couple of miles up to the summit. There was a long stretch along a valley that was relatively flat.

This area is popular with backpackers -- there are several lakes and running streams, so water is plentiful.

The Wallowas are a beautiful range and are worth checking out if you are in the area.
