| partners | | With high temps slated to top out not much over 60, it seemed like a perfect day to take advantage of some of the scenic desert terrain that is too warm to be enjoyable for much of the year.
I invited @the_eagle since this namesake destination is one that he inexplicably has yet to visit, but when I explained it as "the lion of the eagletails" he politely declined.
I penciled in a loop with some new stretches and some repeats, with the primary goal of following @flying_fliver 's official surveyor's route to the summit. Originally the plan was to start with the climb to the summit, but at the last minute we decided to do it in reverse, finishing with the peak.
Standard things all day. Scenic terrain. Arches. Geology. Rocks. Deer. Sheep.
I forgot some of the more challenging obstacles on the route up from Triple Eye, and after 8+ offtrail miles so far, the final climb was a little bit of a grind. But we topped out and enjoyed a celebratory beverage and the world-class views from up here as virga and real showers enveloped the Kofa, Harq, and Bighorn.
The trip down went by way of the fliver surveyor's route, and what a route this is. Steep. I'm not sure I'd want to go up this, though I guess there's nothing quicker than vertical. There are no cliffs or other impassable obstacles, so it does go. I'm just not sure it's the preferred way. The plus is it provides a loop option without any boring valley two-track miles as the north approach requires. I think it might be fun to approach from the dead deer drainage. Maybe I'll try that another time, perhaps even if Bruce ever decides to cross this one off his zoo animal checklist. |
