It felt like we spent more time driving between I-17 and the trailhead than we did hiking! Looping the two possible access roads, both were accomplished in the 4Runner with some light pinstriping and shockingly few dings underneath, but I wouldn't recommend the 153A route to anybody ever -- it took us 90 minutes to drive the 2.6 miles to the trailhead. Yes, you can walk it faster. We took the 801 on the way out, and the longer 3.8 miles took us only an hour. Only the mile closest to the main road is a reasonable (but still very rough) road. In review: don't plan on driving to the actual trailhead unless you have a very capable vehicle and a whole world of patience.
On trail, things were great. Nice views, good tread, and as another hiker we saw stated "within 1 degree of perfect, and I couldn't tell you in which direction."
I made a quick detour to the benchmark at 6825 and found it easily. On the way back I cut over to the high point at 6834 where I found a cairn with a brand new register containing only one entry and not a single recognized name, which is pretty odd for registers I find in this state.
We made our way to a great viewpoint and enjoyed some snacks and photos before heading back the way we came.
As should literally be expected on any trip in this direction, the drive home featured two separate active wildfires causing lane closures, noxious smoke, and traffic delays. Yay I-17. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Isolated Mostly just pockets of oaks up here and they were early in their rusty splendor. |
