Dark enough at the beginning to use a head lamp. Pretty simple trail. The Garmin gave me more elevation than I anticipated. No major climbs. Just a lot of minor ups and downs. Very nice sunrise, though the White Tank Mnts. blocked most of it. I thought I heard the “clickity clack” of hooves in the darkness, but couldn’t see anything. It’s been about 5 years since I last visited the Tortuga. I feel like the beginnings of a subdivision has moved closer. There is a cul-de-sac just outside the park boundaries. No homes yet. I don’t feel it was that close on my previous visit. I’m sure, in 5 more years the homes will be there as well. Encountered 3 hikers on the way out. No wildlife, except for a rabbit and the sound of hooves in the darkness. |
