| no partners | | It’s been awhile since I visited the tower. Got to the Goat Camp TH around 6:30am. Dark enough for a headlamp, though to be honest the initial part of the Goat Camp is very white and it practically glows at night. If there weren’t so many white rocks on the trail (tripping hazards) you could hike it without a light. That being, I used a light for the first 30 minutes. Goat Camp is a neat trail, but the 1 mile to 2 mile stretch is one of the rockier sections in the preserve and had me feeling my age. The turn off for 4018 is just past mile marker 3. This use trail was pretty much as I remembered it, which kind of surprised me. It’s been 8 years since I last hiked and I kind of expected it to be more defined. Still, easy to follow to the top. Took some pictures, signed the register and “chilled” at the top for a bit. Literally. The climb to the top had me sweating and there was a very steady, brisk wind that chilled me to the bone. Brrrrrr! Not a lot of activity in the register. Only about 15 signatures in the 18 months. A few HAZ references and about 3-4 trips by a Mike Bober. I guess that would explain why the trail was as faint as it was. I was amazed at the number of box warehouses visible from the peak. There must have been close to 30. That certainly wasn’t the case on my last visit.
Nice weather. It wasn’t bad until you started climbing the slope to the towers. There was no escaping the wind. Skies were clear. Good air quality. No wildlife. Encountered 10 hikers, 9 of them within 1.5 miles of the TH. |
