I drove in from pavement beginning on Copper Creek Road. The road had recently been graded and was much better than I expected, but I would still recommend a high clearance 4WD vehicle.
I parked near the Sombrero Butte ghost town, although I did not check it out.
I parked north of the butte, which was quite visible from my parking spot. The north face of the butte had some massive and intimidating cliff bands, and an ascent did not look very promising. However, I looped around to the east side of the butte where there was a nice opening that provided access to the top of the butte. It was a very, very steep climb (at one point I gained 850 feet of elevation in 0.4 miles) but at least it was doable.
Once on top of the mesa I walked about a half mile to the high point, which is on the southwest part of the mesa. There was a large cairn at the high point, a summit register, and some really nice unobstructed views. After hanging out there for a bit I returned the way that I came. |
