This was a hike to the summit of Kane Spring Mountain (elevation of 6,908 feet and prominence of 1,348 feet). Kane Spring Mountain is in Graham County; the Pinaleno Mountains; and the Coronado National Forest.

There is actually another peak in Graham County with this name. The other one is on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and is about 200 feet lower than this one.

I drove in about 2.5 miles off of Highway 266 on a well graded dirt road, and parked at a gate at the end of the road. I hiked a few hundred feet on a trail and then hiked on a road for a little over 3 miles. Then I left the road and went up a steep slope to a ridgeline, and then more or less went along the ridgeline to the summit.

After leaving the road, the off-trail portion had a good bit of class 2 scrambling. The most difficult part was at about 6,000 feet where a large rock outcropping was on the ridgeline. On the ascent I went west of the rock outcropping and on the descent I stayed on top of or a little to the east of the rock outcropping. I thought what I did on the ascent was better, and if I were to do the hike again I would stay to the west of this rock outcropping on both the ascent and descent.

On the ridgeline there was a short section with some huge boulders. I had to thread the needle in this section to keep the hike at class 2. Once past the boulders the grade moderated and the remainder of the trek to the summit was relatively easy.

There were about 3 false summits to go over, but I eventually got to the summit. As I was approaching the summit I saw a deer about 20 feet from the summit.

There were nice views at the summit so I hung out there for a lunch break before heading back. There were more names in the summit register than I would have thought, but the peak is on the Southern Arizona Hiking Club (SAHC) peak list and most of the entries were from SAHC hikes.

This was an enjoyable hike and I am glad that I did it.
