Sunrise start to hit the water before most others, and hopes of seeing more wildlife before the river got congested. Anticipated a warm day, failed to anticipate the clouds and left my long sleeved shirt home...I'm much more used to dressing for hiking and definitely don't heat up as much paddling...and certainly not when the boat takes water and I find myself sitting in a puddle for the duration 😆

Release rates were 660 CFS while I was on the river today, the put in at Water Users required dragging the boat nearly all the way into the main channel - I haven't launched from up there since last autumn, when the beach was much more submerged! We anticipated that Pinball might be a little bit rowdy so we opted to stay to the right, which was still plenty splashy. I don't think I've ever brought home quite so much Salt River water in my boat unless I count the time I capsized in Canyon Lake.

The river was otherwise peaceful, though I didn't see as much wildlife as I had hoped. Saw a variety of water fowl including the usual suspects: ducks, herons, and egrets. Also saw lots and lots of red winged blackbirds - I love hearing their calls, grackles, and a surprising number of turkey vultures. As for mammals, we saw one singular horse, and surprisingly, a few cattle. Fish were plenty, with several sighted jumping out of the water. The bugs were thick, but luckily they seemed to be happy enough to fly just slightly overhead and didn't seem to be of the biting variety.

As for people, the parking lots were extremely busy when we took out. When we put in, we saw a few others launch at the same time, but didn't see them for the rest of the trip. We passed a group of kayak fishermen along with a whole lot of folk fishing from the banks.

It was great to spend some time outdoors - was missing my outdoor time last week and this certainly helped me get my fix.

Happier when hiking....I may not move fast (and I'm often distracted by wildflowers), but I'll get there eventually 😆
