| no partners | | I had one more "probable site" I wanted to check out above Sycamore Canyon east of Camp Verde. This was the only one below Fossil Creek Rd., not far from the Verde River.
The dirt road north of Sycamore Canyon is posted as closed to vehicles so I walked it for a ways before heading over to the edge to look around. Not much to see (except for nice views up and down the canyon) but I found some cow paths that it made it easier to get to the bottom. I walked down the creek bottom for a while before picking a route up the other side. Steep and loose at the start (I heard a loud rockfall nearby) but eventually pretty good walking when it flattened out.
I contoured over to the ridge where I expected the ruin and followed it down til it got too narrow and "pinnacly" to continue. I wasn't positive there was a ruin on the end but I started seeing some pottery pieces as I continued along the base. The walls were generally too steep for me to climb but eventually I found a scramble "sans exposure".
It turned out to be a surprisingly good ruin/lookout. Many intact walls right on top...vertical drops on either side...I don't think I've seen a better defensive location. There was pottery and some tools (various types of manos) within the walls so this wasn't just a lookout, people must have lived here.
I was trying to see if this lookout was visible from the ones further upstream (the line-of-sight argument is often made for the specific locations of places like this). They are pretty far apart though and I just couldn't tell.
Another enjoyable day. |
