| partners | | This hike has been on my to do list forever. The weather was never right whenever I'd think about doing this. The stars aligned and things worked out perfectly today. 41 degrees to start, 61 degrees to finish.
We dropped Linda's jeep at the parking area for Black Cross Butte and then drove over to the Fish Hill Overlook to begin our hike.
We started on the closed portion of the Apache Trail and made our way down the road to the creek. Most of this road could be fixed with little effort. There is the one section with the large boulders that would take a bit to clear.
In the creek we were treated to the beginnings of some nice fall color. Easy walking for the most part with only minimal vegetation throughout. The geology was the highlight of the day. Small caves and alcoves dotted the canyon. We kept hoping to get a glimpse of some sheep, to no avail.
We made our way under the bridge and all the way to the lake/river. It worked out perfectly and we never even came close to getting our feet wet. We now just had the road walk back to Linda's Jeep.
Canyon Lake (Mormon Flat Dam) was at 95% full, with an elevation of 1,657'. A foot to 18" higher and we would have been hiking in water towards the end.
Thanks Linda and John for helping me cross this one off my list |
