| partners | | Plans were to spend an easy day checking out a couple of ruin (heritage) sites we hadn't been to before, grab some lunch in Sedona, and then enjoy a short hike.
After acquiring my required (and overpriced) 10 a.m. reservations online for the Palatki Heritage Site ($1 per person), we headed north. We arrived at 9:30 and were able to join the first group of the day—an unexpected stroke of luck.
Our group of seven made our way up to the cliff dwellings, with an informative volunteer explaining the story of this two-floor ruin and the history of the area. Interesting stuff.
We made our way back down, where we met our second volunteer docent—who just happened to be the husband of the first. The rain started as we headed back up. He led us to the "Grotto" area, which is littered with ancient graffiti. The rain continued.
About four miles north on FR525, we reached the Honanki Heritage Site. We parked in the lot, had a snack, and waited for the rain to let up. The gate attendant came out to our car to let us know he was locking up early due to muddy trails. If we wanted to visit, we had to go now.
We made the half-mile loop, which included an interesting cliff dwelling section along with copious scribblings (including one dated 2/27/25 from JL Black). I mentioned this to the attendant, who clarified it was actually from 2/27/1925.
We then headed to lunch at the Mesa Grill at the airport to wait out the rain. Ultimately, we gave up on another hike—rain and 39 degrees was a bit much. It was still raining in Sedona at 6:30 p.m. |
