Early Saturday morning, headed into Boynton Canyon with goals to find a few different sets of cliff dwellings and caves. We had gorgeous clouds in the morning, so the heat wasn’t an issue. Explored some great cliff dwellings near Mushroom Rock and found some interesting alcoves along the way. Mid day heat was a bit rough, but not unbearable. For the grand finale we set out to make it to the cave at the top of boynton. This was a tough one! I had pinned the lower dwellings so we knew that route, but were going to need to wing it for the upper portion. We followed ledges, climbed through crevices and scrambled some very vertical ledges before getting to the final approach. There was a tree placed at the entry and climbing up that was pretty sketchy. After the tree it is extremely vertical with virtually no good hand holds. Thankfully my friend was willing to help me up that part and we succeeded in our mission! Such a huge cave with multiple dwellings. Was saddened by the graffiti in there in addition to a fire pit in one of the dwellings. On the way down, we ran into a fellow adventurer and had a quick chat before heading back down the side path that took us to the main trail. Such an incredible adventure in Sedona! |
