But no matter, after donning the appropriate gear for a warmer hike in the direct sun I decided to drive out near the Salt River and see what catches my fancy. Just short of Blue Point, now that I have the $80 annual permit I decided to hike somewhere in the Bulldog OHV Rec Area. Not sure where to start I decided to drive in about a half-mile and picked a random spot to begin the hike.
As usual, if there is a hill close by, I've just got to climb it so I began with an ascent within 200' of the car for some 'overhead' views. From the hilltop I set off on a generally clockwise off-trail meandering with no specific destination in mind. For a while I headed South within 250' of and roughly parallel with FR #10.
About 25 minutes into the hike I spotted what at first I thought was a coyote but it was not, which I believe rendered my first few photo attempts a failure, panning as I would for the speed and movement of a coyote.
Ok, so what was it? A Ringtail? Wishful thinking? Through the brush initially it seemed to have a striped tail but no such luck.
Nope, it was a Gray Fox. I didn't know until I got home whether it was in any of the four photos I attempted. And wouldn't you know it, the only photo was missing the end of the tail!
Moving on... not 5 minutes later I spotted two Mule Deer heading left-to-right about 100' across where I was headed. I was down-wind (20-25 mph) from them and they weren't in any hurry so I don't believe they knew I was there, but they continued bounding along like in an Elmer Fudd cartoon so no chance for a photo.
Based on their direction of travel toward a depression where I had encountered deer in the past, on the off-chance they stopped there, I decided to follow a wide loop to the other side hoping for a second chance, but no such luck.
The rest of the hike all I encountered were rabbits, lizards, a coachwhip & a cardinal... nope, the only near photo op the Cardinal presented it was in the midst of a bush so nothing doing there. Unfortunately no rattlers, which with temps 77° to 88° was a bit of a surprise.
