We began from a wide spot along Usery Pass Road a mile or so from Bush Highway, where we ducked through the fence and headed somewhat in the direction of Lone Mountain. This time I gave the reins to Tracey to do the route-finding.
She was a bit reluctant, asking where I wanted to go, to which I replied, "There is no plan, no specific destination" (other than returning to the car) "just wander wherever you wish." It took a bit of prodding as she has always been a follower on our hikes, but she finally took the reins... for a mile or so when it defaulted back to me.
Oh well, after route-finding through thick/thin/thorny brush for 20+ years in Arizona it has become second-nature so ok, I'll lead us safely through the cholla.
Although I had encountered deer, javelina and/or coyote in the past, on this day we went unrewarded... just a rabbit or two and a ground squirrel.
At least we got our 4+ miles/2+ hours of hiking in. Another breezy day but with temps 67-73° F it felt just right. |
