Knowing I likely wouldn't be driving far, I just headed out and see what came to mind. At the Bush and Usery Pass intersection, still with no plan I turned right. About halfway up toward the pass, for no specific reason I can recall, I turned around and parked where the gravel shoulder was a bit wider, and set off a-wanderin'.
I hadn't followed any part of the trail looping around Lone Mountain in over 5 years, so I headed in that direction, hoping to catch the trail and follow it for a while anyway, at least over the North lower saddle of Lone Mountain. I would eventually connect with the trail, but only after back-tracking a couple of times due to cutting too close to the slope too soon.
Once on the trail I followed it for just under a half-mile before I realized I didn't want to do a full loop, partly due to the poor trail conditions, but likely more to drop down and wander in the various drainages hoping to encounter some wildlife... of which various deer including a large buck along with small groups of javelina being almost somewhat regular sightings over the years. No luck this trip.
After getting my fill of a number of ascents and descents between drainages I headed up to follow the lower North ridge of Lone Mountain all the way to the end and finally made a long winding arc back to the car. The only item of note on the return leg was encountering the detritus of a shooter. By the number of empty boxes of 9mm it appears they used up a full 300 rounds... too much for 'just hunting' but with nothing nearby resembling a target, who knows? |
