| no partners | | This was the second excellent lake Dot and I hiked to in the Pioneer Mountains.
We got a pretty early start and chilly start, (37 degrees) from our campsite, which was also where the trailhead was. I love starting a trail right from camp. There was a cold ford of the creek a few-tenths of a mile in to start the morning. As a note, one can start the trail a quarter mile before the campground and cross the stream on a well constructed stock bridge. This variation adds about a half mile each way, the quick, cold ford made more sense for us. There were a few presumably somewhat recent blow downs in the first couple miles of the trail, but it was otherwise in excellent shape and the walking was easy and the grade gentle. The trail is in a heavy forest for most of the hike, but views of the surrounding mountains open up here and there and some scenic pocket meadows along the way offer some more open terrain. Grayling Lake was a scenic little lake and well worth the hike. I would have loved to have hiked on to Lion Lake, which I read is as scenic as Grayling Lake, but Dot was at her cap for miles and we returned the way we hiked in. |
