I met Ed L. around 12.30 at the US CA border. I parked on the US side and walked across the Rainbow bridge which is closest to Niagara Falls. It cost nothing to walk across but it would cost $1 USD or $1.25 CAD to come back into the US. Not sure why there's a cost just one way. Driving a car across costs $6 USD!! I'm glad I walked and saved the money. Plus, there was a line of cars and it was faster walking, good exercise, and I was able to get pics of Niagara Falls from the Rainbow bridge.
The trails were maintained nicely for the first 1 1/3 miles. After that, the trail was narrower and not marked well until getting to near the bottom of the Whirlpool trail. From there it was a dirt trail for 2/3 of the way up, and then there were wooden stairs for the remaining 1/3 of the way. Once on top, there was a flat paved trail leading back to the parking area. Ed had an annual parking pass, which I believe he paid $50 CAD for. For non-pass holders, it would have been $8 per hour which seemed pretty steep. Hiking the long loop takes about 4 hours, so that would have ran $32 without the pass. Buy the pass and it pays for itself after 2 hikes!
This was a very enjoyable route. There are many other trails to take. Nice rock formations and even some small water falls that the trail goes by.
