| partners | | Was scouting some Peak Bag opportunities and this one intrigued. Messaged Linda about it since she's done it and I decided to do it. She joined me for the fun. When she said it was steep and to bring poles, she wasn't kidding. I haven't done anything this steep since before I got new knees.
I didn't use the poles on the way up because I like to lean into the slope more. There were times it was definitely necessary to use the hands though. Thankfully, after all the rain, the ground was soft, so sliding more than you gained was minimal.
The views at the top were worth all the work. Great views of Horseshoe and some glimpses of Bartlett and the Verde River, as well as sweeping views of the Mazzies. The ruins were pretty cool too. We checked out the top all around, discussing possibly less steep alternatives for ascent and descent and decided to check out a different route going down. I think we agreed at the bottom that it was slightly better although a bit slow on the steepest part, due to being a bit more rocky. But the real steep part was much shorter. I did use poles going down. I have decided that faceplants really aren't my thing anymore and when I fall, I tend to stick rather than bounce.
I think we forgot how much down we did on the way in on the OHV road. A lot more up on the way out and I was tanking on it pretty good. Felt good to get in a major effort though, it's been a bit. And I wore my large day use pack with weight for research purposes as well as conditioning.
Big thanks to Linda for joining me, it was a good day! And basking in the sun, which I hadn't seen for a week, was pretty sweet too.
This is a shocker to some I'm sure, including me, but I actually forgot to bring the camera with and I didn't want to go back for it, so phone pics it is and I can actually post without internet. |

Wildflowers Observation Light Poor flowers are so confused. With all the rain, they are trying to bloom now, not realizing that winter is still coming. The frost will kill them before they have a chance to go to seed. |
