We followed a two track around the nw side of the peak, almost up to the saddle. Just below the saddle, we headed steeply up the side of the mountain. Wet ground made for slightly better footing, but it’s steep and loose no matter what. I pointed out the rocks we needed to aim for, and we picked our way uphill. Once at the rocks, we took a break, and I looked at descent options off the west side of the peak.
From the rock outcropping up to the summit is generally less steep. Great views from the summit, where we took another break. Clear air and cool temps helped with the views. From there, we headed over to the ruins. Then headed down to the rock outcropping.
It seemed like we had two options for our descent that were slightly less steep than our ascent route. We opted to angle across the top of the start of a drainage, then come down the slope on the south side of that drainage. Angling across was steep, then coming down thru the initial rock band was quite steep. Below the rock band, the grade started to moderate and it wasn’t bad at all. I would probably use this as my ascent route in the future. It’s slightly more offtrail than following the two track around, but was a preferable incline.
We hopped back on the road and walked the mile or so back to the tracks. Fun little challenging hike with great views. Good to see Pam again! |
