The trailhead is along Salt Creek, sandwiched between the Magellan & Phillips fuel terminals and the railroad tracks, which was my main reason for choosing this hike. Homestead Trail goes south, Jamaica North goes north. Both follow an old rail line. I opted to go north since it offered more options with the Wilderness Park trails that follow the creek.
Cloudy and about 30 degrees to start. Followed Jamaica North for a short distance, then meandered around the Wilderness Park trails. I generally headed north on the east side of the creek for a few miles, then headed south on the west side of the creek, working my way back to the trailhead. These trails would be mostly shaded in the summer.
Easy hiking, mostly flat. One bridge was broken by a large toppled tree, so I carefully climbed over that area, hoping the bridge would hold. I’m writing a triplog now, so it was successful and I did not end up in the icy creek. Trail junctions were poorly marked, but the trails are very distinct, even when snow covered. The snow was a little more frozen than yesterday, so a few more slippery spots. A few snow flurries, especially as I was finishing up. Saw a few squirrels and deer. Nice to get some mileage in. |
