Daniela has wanted to hike Brown’s Peak for years, but the biggest hurdle has been the road. She gets carsick very easily, and that’s a long road (from either direction) to the trailhead. She finally decided a while back she wanted to just go ahead and get it done, so we set today aside for it.

Parts of 143 have been recently graded, so a few areas were smoother than normal. Other parts are still rocky. We stopped once along the drive in for Daniela to deal with being carsick, and stopped once to take pics of a coatimundi running on the road.

Lots of cars at the trailhead. Very windy as we headed uphill. The first two miles of trail were in great shape. We were mostly shielded from the wind above the saddle. We took our time thru the steeper stuff. Once in the chute, there was no wind at all. Two guys ahead of us were immediately clueless about how to navigate the chute, so they followed us up. Daniela is good at scrambling, so we were able to move carefully but confidently the entire way up.

Breezy at the summit where we took a short break. The two guys opted to follow us back down the chute. Pleasant conversation along the way, as we carefully made our way back down. They stopped to take a break above the saddle, but Daniela and I kept going. Easy hike back downhill, and the breeze felt good in the warmer temps.

Daniela requested we take El Oso out to 188 to see if that would be better for her. It was not, and we had to stop three more times. At that point, I was regretting my choice to drive the Jeep. While it’s the fastest on a dirt road, and my preference, it’s a much rougher ride than either of my trucks. She may have felt better in the smoother ride of the trucks. Or maybe not. I’ll probably never know as I doubt she will ever be willing to take either road again. She grabbed a Sprite in Tonto Basin, which did not help. After we stopped one more time along the side of 188, I asked her if she’d prefer to drive, but she said she didn’t think it would help. I didn’t really want anyone else driving my Jeep anyway (I rarely even let Reagan drive it), but would have been willing if she thought it would have been better. After that, it was an uneventful drive back to Ahwatukee. Daniela loved the hike, but I think it’ll be the only time she ever stands on Brown’s.

Still a good hike. Lots of people on the trail today.
