| no partners | | The forecast called for rain and high winds after 1100, lasting thruout the day and overnight, so I took Harlow out for a local walk to get her tired before she’d be cooped up for the day. We got started around 0800. Temps around 35, cloudy. I opted for the Red trail first, since they are doing thinning along that trail, but the workers hadn’t arrived yet.
Made the loop clockwise. Lots of blowdown from the big windstorm the week before Christmas. That alone probably accomplished half the thinning project. Passed thru some recently thinned areas too. Mostly frozen trail, but a few spots of mud. I could hear the machinery starting just before we finished that trail, good timing.
We crossed over to the Yellow trail and also went clockwise. Some muddy stretches. Some new gravel “bridges” thru some low spots. Lots of blowdown on this side as well. All must have been cleared right after it happened, so no obstacles on the trail. It started snowing around 0915. Lightly at first, but heavier as we finished. The dog was unconcerned, and always seem to like snow. The pond was finally full. Harlow once saw a turtle in the pond, so now she has to look for it every single time. Heard some owls. Plenty of squirrels. One woodpecker. Two other hikers with their dogs. Good to get a few miles in before the worst of the weather later today. |
