Well Pete and I made it up to the Inner Basin to hike up Humphreys, but a mistake by me led to a confusing and frustrating day. Starting just after 7am, we got up to the wood shacks towards the inner basin in 40 minutes where I wouldn't see Pete for another 7 hours. Here's what happened, I had to take a nature break where I told Pete to keep going and I would catch up. Ten minutes later I was hiking again up to the inner basin where I didn't see Pete along the long stretch of trail, I thought I would have seen him as I had a quick pace going but nothing. For some reason I got mixed up and thought I had to break from the inner basin trail around 1.8 miles, where that idea came from I do not know, but I saw the other trail or road on the right which seemed to head up the direction to where we needed to be on the mountain so I took that route. It was steep and rocky and 15 minutes up I did not see Pete and began to think I was on the wrong route. I approached some snow and no footprints were made so I knew I had gone the wrong way. My thinking now was to continue up the slope to where I would see the trail on my left and see Pete heading up, thinking of course he would still be heading up. So I pushed on up the slope on the east face where I would eventually run right on the trail heading towards the summit trail. I saw no footprints in the snow and thought I was now ahead of Pete and he would come to me so I waited on the trail for 30 minutes. Didn't see him so I started to head down a bit thinking we would run right into each other. I was at the Agassiz/Fremont saddle around 11,200ft and waited almost 30 more minutes and nothing. I began to think perhaps this wasn't the right trail, but knew it had to be. I made the decision to head up towards Humphreys thinking I would look back and see Pete coming up at a nice slow pace. Well once again nothing and I waited some more once I got close to the Humphreys summit trail. I just made the decision to hit the summit and come down where I would be sure to see Pete heading up. Well after 20 minutes on the summit and coming down and getting back on the trail heading back to the inner basin I noticed only my footprints in the snow. I began to wonder and think what could have happened to Pete and made my way back down where thunder clouds roared and snow flurries began to fall. Came down the inner basin trail and made it back to the trailhead where Pete was waiting. Pete had actually went up to around 10,500ft and waited for me on the trail where I was waiting for him above him and of course how could he know I was above him now since I took the wrong trail? So he actually headed back down looking for me and went back up to the same spot without running into me. He actually had some people alert the proper authorities that I was missing. When I heard of this I was so disapointed in my decision of the day to keep heading up. I knew the days events of mishaps were all my fault and felt bummed for the ride back home. Pete and I talked about it in our own way finally making fun of the events and learned a new lesson from this experience. No matter how many times you've been out something can always go wrong, and well I was fully alerted to that today. Sorry Pete for the mishap. Hope everyone stays safe out there.
