Trail Peak is an 11,622' (according to the summit marker) peak located in the Golden Trout Wilderness just south of the John Muir Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest of the eastern Sierra Nevada. I gained access to it by taking the Horse Shoe Meadow Road south from the Whitney Portal Road. The last stretch of the very scenic road climbs through many switchbacks up into the mountains. When driving north on US 395, the Horse Shoe Meadow Road is the road that you see climbing the mountainside about 10 miles south of Lone Pine, CA.

I parked at the day use area and hiked down to the Horse Shoe Meadow area. From there I crossed the flowing creek and climbed over a large sand ridge before dropping down and crossing another small flowing creek. Then I hiked a maintained trail up to Trail Pass at 10,495'. I left the trail and hiked cross country, to avoid the annoying switchbacks, and ended up at the scenic Mulkey Meadows. From Mulkey Meadows I hiked and scrambled up to Trail Peak. The summit isn't much to write home about, but it is a pretty area and the view was nice. Plus, I did this as a warm up for the next day's Mount Russell climb. From Trail Peak I hiked north back to Hoarse Shoe Meadow and the parking area above it. The large amount of gain and loss of elevation accounts for the high AEG on this trip.
