Next weekend is Labor Day, and I figure it's just good sense not to go out and hike Humphrey on a busy holiday weekend. Today wasn't too bad, but it was definitely more people than I am used to seeing on a mountain. Now, the plan is to not hike the peak until Thanksgiving at the earliest, and hopefully not before the return of winter conditions. We'll see.
I couldn't have had better weather for the day. It was dry and pleasant, with nothing more than passing clouds all day. There must have been some smoke in the air from distant fires, because the sun and air in Flagstaff and on the mountain had an orange tinge to it. It reminded me of being in the Central Valley in California earlier in the month, or how the air would look around cities in late summer back east: think the closing scene of the 2001 remake of Ocean's 11.
Everything is dusty and dry on the mountain when it is normally quite wet at this time of year. Autumn appears to be coming on a little early up high. Maybe it was because of that, or because today was my 50th time up there, but either way, I took my camera and snapped a few pictures. |
