Hank (Grasshopper) had asked me if I would consider taking him up to the ruin site this winter. He didn't have to twist my arm much. The views alone are worth the effort and scrambling up the rugged butte is a blast. Hank did real well climbing up to the ruins. Ha! I think his committed determination overshadowed his common sense. The steep and twisted route to the top is difficult with high consequences for mistakes. I am very proud of him and thoroughly impressed with his agility!
On this trip we spent extra time exploring the ruins with hopes of finding more artifacts. Our efforts paid off! We found two more metates and extensive pottery shards. Some of the pieces were quite large. The true treasure for the day was a beautiful quarts spear tip that Hank discovered in some brush. Very cool!! He will be posting a photo in his upcoming set.
This trip will likely be my last Sierra Ancha Hike for the season. Three off-trail Sierra Ancha hikes in one month is brutal. Off-trail hiking is this area is murder on the feet. The rocks are terrible! I love the area but I definitely need a break. Its time to take the kayak out and enjoy some beautiful winter paddling...
