I had made a dental appointment in Holbrook because I was very disappointed with a dentist in Show Low, and the ones in Eagar didn't have appointments until next year, when my current medical plan will have changed. It's 90 miles from Eagar to Holbrook, along 180, passing the south entrance to Petrified Forest.
So, I decided to stop in at Petrified Forest on my way home, for a short hike.
I really liked the dentist. But when I went out to my car, it wouldn't start. The dentist came out and helped me with it. I had left the lights on! I carry jumper cables with me. Actually, both dentists and one of the techs came out to help, because I was parked next to a tech's car. She started it up, and Dr. Hansen hooked up the cables. The second dentist, Dr. Fish, observed the operation. She had recommended Dr. Hansen as the best mechanic in the office. Does that happen in Phoenix? Emphatically NO!
Oh, you wanted to hear about the hike? It's a couple miles, a lot of it on old asphalt, to see all the long logs and then walk over to the (NPS reconstructed, but not to Anasazi specs) ancient dwelling they call Agate House.
The only wildlife I saw was a raven, who squawked at me as I sat in the lee of the shade structure and ate my roast beef sandwich with horseradish, Swiss cheese, brown mustard and red onions. I didn't offer to share it. There was a slight breeze and the temperature was less than 50 degrees. |
