I could have driven about 4.25 miles further than I did, but I got an early start and decided to get in some extra mileage before the end of the year. I enjoyed the extra road miles in the morning, but it was a bit of a slog in the afternoon. If I did it over again I would at least drive to the Painted Desert TH, which would shave a couple of miles each way.
Once leaving the road I didn't care my ascent route too much -- there was too much time in some messy drainages and washes. On the descent I winged it a bit and it turned out better I think.
There were great views at the summit -- some of the best that I have seen.
Part of the hike was on the Yuma Proving Ground, so I got a YPG hunting permit to be legal. My only weapon was some trekking poles, so I did not bag any game; but I did bag another nice peak! |
