Actually there are 2 high point contenders, both of which are within a closed contour of 1,280'-1,320'. The 2 are near each other so I was able to visit both.
I first went to the HP candidate that is to the southeast, and then I went to the one that is to the northwest.
The Gila Bend city limits run through the closed countour of the SE candidate, but based on the location of the obvious high point and on some research that I did as to the location of the city limits, I believe that the high point of the SE candidate is right on the city limit boundary.
My phone recorded an elevation of 1,309 feet for the SE candidate, and 1,287 feet for the NW candidate. I imagine that this is within the margin of error for elevation measurements on a phone, so I do not believe that you can definitively say that the SE candidate is the higher of the two. So I feel like you need to visit both, but I imagine that Kenny Rogers would put his money on the SE candidate as being higher.
This isn't the most exciting high point that I have ever been on, but going on this hike was still a pleasant way to spend part of a nice winter day.
I have now been to the high point of 22 of the 23 municipalities in Maricopa County -- the only one left is Avondale. |
