I hiked to the high point of the Cargo Muchacho range late last year, and decided to hike to Stud Mountain on this occasion.
The Cargo Muchacho's got their name during the halcyon days of yesteryear, when the area was a mining hotbed. Legend has it that one evening a young lad in a mining camp came home with his pants pockets full of gold nuggets. This led to these mountains being named the Cargo Muchacho Mountains (cargo muchacho is Spanish for "loaded boy").
I drove in on some dirt roads and parked about 1/2 mile before my intended spot -- I got tired of driving on the roads and wanted to do a little extra hiking, especially since this was a short hike. Once I left the road, I went up a drainage for a short distance before getting on a ridgeline that would take me to the summit.
The ridgeline was solid class 2/2+ the whole way, with a bit of class 3 mixed in for good measure. There was a bit of exposure in a few places that likely could have been avoided.
There were lots of false summits on the way, but I eventually made it to the summit. I located the benchmark and one of the two reference marks. There were great views at the summit and I took a well deserved break up there. I returned on the same ridgeline.
I like the Cargo Muchacho's -- this is a rugged and scenic mountain range that few people bother to go to. |
