Pre-birthday day trip up to Sedona for a little hiking. This was hike number three for the day. This was a cool little cap on the day. Very cool area - someplace out of the way to bring folks from out of town.

One of my favorite hikes of last year, had another go but subbed Mooney Canyon for Casner mountain. Prefer it the tried and true way, but it was nice to have a reason to go back. Started the loop at 7am from Dogie Trailhead. Drive in is low clearance passable, albeit annoying, to the Casner Trail, after that I wouldn't chance it.

Walked back down the road to Casner and cut corners up to Robber's Roost. Got around the corner to a stone's throw away and saw that a couple people had camped in it and were just waking up. Turned around and headed down toward Robber's Roost Tank before heading toward Sebra Tank. Easy walk through the grass with no bushwacking.

After Sebra, headed down to Mooney Trail. Where the route starts on HAZ and RS is, I believe, private property. I think you can drive around via FR 4498 to a legal starting point. I met the trail someways down. The real track is only a hundred yards or so East of the RS track, but I saw a cairn and headed along the old alignment(?). Got caught in a ton of brush and eventually made my way to the creekbed. I found Mooney Trail at a crossing within a mile. Much less scenic way of making the climb as opposed to Casner. The trail leaves the creek just as the pines thicken. Shaves some elevation gain, however.

Best part of the hike for me is the descent on Taylor Cabin Trail. Thick forest of tall, orange pines with a red rock and limestone background plus some narrows near the bottom. Impossible quiet. A little snow, but it's been cleaned up nearly all the way down and was much easier to follow than last year. Nearly all of the deadfall has been recently cleared.

Got to Sycamore creek hoping for water, and found it completely dry. Was around the Parsons TH last week and found it to be swollen with water. Oh well. Didn't try to find the trail until the last mile or so to the cabin. The canyon bottom is so scenic through that stretch it'd be a shame to miss it. That, and last year had a lot of trouble with it.

Had a break around the cabin and hit Dutch Kid. Would like to do the loop next year and stick to Sycamore Basin/the bottom of the creek for that mile and a half to the junction. Would really only want to do it with water. Dutch Kid is well maintained and the views back down the canyon are great. Weather started to feel warm, any warmer and it'd have been too much. Nice breeze all day.

The friend I went with last year and I have been arguing about Dogie for as long. After this trip started to see his point. It's a bit of a slog without the awesome canyon views that are present for the rest of the hike. Saw the only people of the day at the end. Trio of campers headed in with two bottles of water, who weren't sure where they were. Convinced them to turn back before heading home.

I had never hiked to Robbers Roost in Sedona, so I decided that today was a good day to make it happen. I did not want to go up there just to do a short hike to Robbers Roost, so I also hiked up to Loy Butte and did a short hike to some ruins not too far from Robbers Roost.

Robbers Roost was worth checking out and it had some nice views. There were a couple of other people there and we did not stay too long. Once back at the truck I drove short distance, parked, and then we went and checked out some ruins atop a rock outcropping. There were some nice walls on top of the rock outcropping, and I am glad that we took the time to check them out.

Then we drove to the Loy Canyon TH and made our way up to Loy Butte, passing 3 sets of ruins along the way. The first set was some impressive cliff dwellings; the second set had some crumbled down walls along with a couple of pictoglyphs and some pottery shards; and the 3rd set, down below Loy Butte, was the foundation of a building that overlooked the Hancock Ranch down below.

We stopped for a lunch break atop a rock outcropping next to the 3rd set of ruins, and then made a short, but steep, climb up to Loy Butte. We were about the 7th or 8th entry in the summit register on Loy Butte, so it doesn't look like too many people go up there. It was a fun climb and had some nice views, so going up there is a worthy endeavor.

Mileage and elevation gain for the 3 hikes is:
1) Robbers Roost: 1.4 miles with 335 feet of elevation gain
2) Rock Outcropping Ruins: 1.1 miles with 379 feet of elevation gain
3) Loy Butte: 5.6 miles with 1,223 feet of elevation gain

Stats above are the sum of these 3

Sunset trip to Robbers Roost in Sedona. The road gets rough about 1ish miles from the TH and there is a parking area there as well. This adds ~2 miles to your hike, unless you have 4x4, lotsa clearance and good tires. The road is rocky walking in and small incline heading in. It’s a short hike to robbers roost from there, some ups and downs, but a well defined trail. There is one spot that’s a tad sheer when you’re approaching the cave. Most would be fine, good grip on shoes would help. Although we passed a good amount of people exiting, we pretty much had the cave to ourselves and watched the sunset. :y: We had enough light getting off the trail and only got a tad dark when we were walking the road. It’s a nice quick little hike and really cool views! It was supposed to be our add on hike, but we ended up finding an epic campsite off the beaten path that had perfect hammock trees. I’ve always wanted to hammock in Sedona, and I was excited and enjoyed a few white claws and relaxed in the hammock a bit too long. Totally fine with me. Turned out to be an excellent day with nice hike/relaxation combo. :D

Since there will be no long vacations for me this year, I've been taking a couple days a month off and trying to check a few things off the list on those days. I figured this would be a good one because I could get a short Jeep ride in and a short hike. My research led me to believe that the route would be an easy drive. It was, but that last mile or so on 9530 still would require high clearance and/4wd. It has a few really good ruts right at the beginning which makes for a nice filter. Pretty rocky that last mile so its slow going. The hiking trail is easy to fine and I was able to find the left turn pretty easily. I was concerned a bit about the "ledge" area, but seeing it in person it was not bad. Reminded me of a section of delicate arch trail, but shorter. The roost was nice. I only hung out there about 20 minutes, but I'm sure many would spend more time there. I had the place to myself, only a few others on their way in as I was on my way out. It was a good time.

At the intersection of 525C and 9530 is where we parked. Within site of the intersection is the most hazardist part of the road. Its pretty nasty looking and I did not try it.

Light detour from the original planned ruins trip but it worked out. I just assumed folks wouldn't be around but met with a few that were following behind.

Day 3 of our adventure in Sedona.
We started the Robbers Roost trail around 2:30am. We hung out at the roost for a couple hours taking pictures and screwing around. The total trip time was about 3 1/2 hours. We then drove to Fay Canyon. We spend 6 hours exploring the canyon and visiting the Arch.

Casner Mountain Trail #8
We enjoyed this one five years ago and it held it's value. It is a high rolling road perched over red rock views. If you remotely like Ord via Slate this easier version with world class views will smack you silly.

Buck Ridge Cabin
After a nice walk through pines this was a great find. Most notable is the nearby tank, lake sized compared to most tanks surrounded by a nice forest.

We walked through a lot of pines with wind wisping above. The hike was a therapeutic recharge. In the summer you get hints of coolness. Today we got hints of scorching radiation. Sure was nice to turn the tables on that badboy.

Hidden Cabin
The "Hidden Cabin" sign in front of it gives away the secret. Another nice setting. Minus a few brownie points for lack of fishing pond.

Secret Mountain Trail #109
Only a short walk on this storybook trail over to Loy #5. The trailhead is remote and in pristine condition.

Loy Canyon Trail #5
We are currently hitting recorded temps for a good week. It was pretty toasty where this one opens up heading down. Ignore the tears as the views are just outstanding. Down into the canyon you get shade relief back to square one.

Off Trail Joy Joy
In order to make this loop work we came nauseously close to a few houses. It all appeared to be on the up and up, not one stay out sign. Just be respectful, no weapons or motor vehicles. Step two was getting across some thick brush. It wasn't terrible since the worst part was a couple hundred yards. A mile plus dodging prickly pair was the balance. The day was cooling off with the sun dropping behind a ridge so it was semi enjoyable.

Robbers Roost - Sedona
We approached this backwards. Latching to the top of an old 4wd road for a mine. We headed down and worked in the roost just as the sun melted away. No cars at the makeshift trailhead. Then three college girls leaving, surprised us rounding the corner to the roost =)

Synopsis
Bruce threw together a shocking winner in ten minutes. With miles of pines up top I could see hitting this in the summer with an early start. Roaming up top more until the heat subsides then drop back into the oven. It would undoubtedly be a water lugging event.

Needed to get to cooler ground...

I had some unfinished business in this area and reused a couple of past hikes to create a loop.

There were two (Turned out to be 3) cabins up in the pines that I had not seen yet, Plus I'd never been to the Sedona version of the Robbers Roost.

In pre-production, I stumbled on a Ruin while trying to minimize the road walk, so that added one more "Destination".

We started a tad south of the Robbers Roost and saved that for the end of the day.

We bushwhacked over to the Ruins and Class 4'd it to the top. A small but interesting perch.

Next it was up the Multi-use Casner Mountain Trail #8. If you start from FR 525C, it's a 2.8 mile steady climb, 2100' to the top. It's an old road, but you do get some tremendous views of the Red Rock-Secret Mountain and Sycamore Canyon Wilderness areas. There have been some rock slides, but most ORV's can still make it.

The first cabin up was Buck Ridge Cabin. This one actually turned out to be two Cabins. The first, a log cabin built long ago, sadly had taken a direct hit from a fallen tree. The roof had caved in. The 2nd cabin was more recent maybe from the 60's or 70's. It had a well that came into the cabin, with a pump, into the sink. It even had a poured concrete floor.

Just outside was one of the nicest tanks I'd see. All nestled in the pines, it almost looked like a swimin' hole.

We bushwhacked over to the area of the next cabin. We stumbled on some old roads that could have made it a bit easier, but I'd never seen them on the Sat. views.

I expected Hidden Cabin to be..er...um... Hidden. But there it was in view from the FR. The WARNING HANTAVIRUS sign on the front of the building was apropos. The rodents had overrun that cabin.

Secret Mountain Trail #109 to Loy Canyon Trail #5, was our way off the mountain. Always spectacular views here. The upper mile of Loy is sun exposed, but after that you are in the pines and a gentler grade for the remaining 5.5 miles.

The next part I was a bit worried about. I could see some houses on the Sat. view. We approached a few closed gates across the FR, and could see larger signs on them. No motorized traffic, respect others property, etc. so we continued through without incident.

For the next off trail section, I tried to pick stuff on the Sat. view that looked "Less Thick". There were only a couple of catclaw sections that wanted to decorate my legs. Somehow I managed not to kick any of the low growing, grass hidden prickly pear.

Finally with darkness coming, we were on an old mining road and with a stop at the Robbers Roost left. Just as we approached the Roost, 3 college aged young ladies emerged saying how they's just finished a Photo Shoot, complete with costume change?? hmmmm.

Robbers Roost smelled like purfume.... much different that the Robbers Roost in the Superstitions.

Minkis
We drove up Tuesday to camp at the Roost and hike in the area on Wednesday. I usually avoid Sedona but went with Minkis' suggestion. We road walked about a mile before the Roost trail. I was already enjoying the views. We had the Roost to ourselves. Set up camp and did some exploring above and around the Roost. Clouds would come and go resulting in an ever changing view. We enjoyed sunset and a peaceful night by the fire. Dark clouds rolled by all night but no precipitation came of it. We saw one mule deer and a mouse that was attacking some food Minkis left out. Great little spot to spend a night.

After the flooded Sycamore Creek prevented us from making it to Taylor Cabin, I insisted we check out the roost. Jackie had been sold on a rainy night in a remote cabin with a warm wood burning stove. The roost doesn't quite live up to that, but is a nice dry spot to spend a rainy night with stellar views. I was hoping for snow to lower elevations, but the clouds put on a show instead. It was no skatchkins Christmas, but not a bad spot to turn over the new year. :)

A more sillier trip had to be postponed because of a slew of things and Noel was coming off a 2 week sickness. I thought my heart was broken when the trip got scrapped, but when she found out, she looked like she had needed it even more than me so I quickly checked on an overnight stay in Jerome. I found a nice BnB for Sunday night and let her know (instead of the usual element of surprise) to peak her spirits. She liked and then asked if we could stay in the cave the night before since we'd be close by. How could I say no?

So we got up there and found some people trickling out and then had it to ourselves. I hiked in a bundle of firewood and some games for the evening. All went well.

About 2 or 3 in the morning, Noel nudged me in our zipped together NorthFaces and mumbled there was someone in the cave. I asked her to repeat since I thought she was sleep talking and she mumbled it again. I thought then that she must've heard an animal scrapping about and did a scan with my overbright Chinese special, "Oh pumpkin, I'm sorry," I said when my beam swath hit a guy sitting in the cave with a blanket draped over him. He said no problem and it was what it was so I lied and told Noel it was fine went back to sleep. Maybe 1-2hrs later our visitor tripped on a rock leaving (good, ghosts can't trip), and apologized and left the cave. He had no light and we never saw him hike away so there's that. He didn't even watch the sunrise (or hit a drum for 2hrs) so that was weird. We talked to some mountain bikers the next day who were camped on the road in. A vehicle never passed them but they thought they head footsteps in the middle of the night and they had chalked it up to possibly deer. I guess it's not as odd as the other stories from there, like drum guy, the give LSD to kids so they can see their shakras early and know the truth about Abraham Lincoln and Mary still being alive with the aliens-guy, or the secret gold tree.

Morning came and we practice the LNT rule of making the cave smell like maple bacon and then packed up. We picked a good time as we saw some people driving in to give the cave a lookie-loo. We hiked up the road a bit to see some mine remnants and then drove over to Jerome where we did a lot more hiking. Was a great weekend even though the intended shenanigans got held up.

My Taco left the pavement, leaving Boynton Pass Road and the trailheads for Fay Canyon and Bear Mountain behind.
FR 152C showed signs of recent heavy rains for 2 miles before I hit FR 525, where I turned left and headed south for 2.8 miles. When I got to FR 525C, I turned right again, and headed NW for 6.6. FR 9530 soon arrived, and I turned right onto the less maintained road. It's only 1.1 miles to Robbers Roost trailhead, but much slower going. High clearance but no 4WD needed.
Rounding the bend and seeing the Roost for the first time put a big grin on my face I had a hard time losing. An amazing piece of natural architecture lightly enhanced but not ruined by generations of people. :)
I carried two loads in to be extra comfortable that night, and then spent some time exploring the top of the rock, finding some cool geology there as well.
Evening arrived soon, a few Oak Creek Canyon Amber Ale's were enjoyed along with the view, and the LED's came out when it got dark. 8)
Having had enough fun for one day, I retired, laying on my pool float with a sleeping bag but no tent. I've done this dozens of times in the back of my truck, but never on the ground where the creepy crawlies hang out. I tried to not think about it, but it went something like this -
Aah...9:30...nighty night...what an awesome day...that's some fine beer...so tired...what a wild place to sleep...man, am I comfortable...still awake...turn to my side...10:32...turn to the other side...turn back to my back...fe fe fe fe...what was that?...something is flying back in forth right over my face...flashlight...bat...turn to my side...something just moved by my gear...grab both the regular and blacklight flashlights...nothing that I can see...wide awake now...12:17...something just flashed...am I dreaming?...another flash...rumble...aah, lightning...it starts to rain...this is awesome to be in a cave in the rain...so tired...the waterfall in front of the cave is actually pretty loud...put in my earplugs...2:41...wind picks up...so comfy...still awake...I hear birds...is that a glow in the east?...4:11...I think I slept for a few hours there, but I can't be sure. First real bivy. Exciting, but I'm not sure I could get used to it. I like excitement, but I also like sleeping when it's time to sleep.
Had breakfast, serenaded by the morning calls of birds over the plain below and the smell of creosote and petrichor. Went for another stroll and checked out the western alcoves, something that would be exceptional anywhere else. But once you've seen the Roost, everything else kind of pales. ;)

We kept trying to do this at Christmas but family and the sniffles kept it from going down. Thursday we had both had enough of work so we planned Friday to bolt. Unfortunately we weren't the only ones with the idea and we rolled up to the trailhead at 8:30pm as someone else was. There's plenty of room in there so the 2 of 2 of us spread out but shared a great fire. Noel and I turned in just after the invite to a full moon naked all you can eat drug party but before the meeting aliens and still alive Mary Magdalene talk. Don't worry, there was plenty discussion in between to keep us entertained.

In the morning as they were leaving, frustrated at the company Noel asked why couldn't we just stay the next night too. There was no reason we couldn't. I asked to buy a couple dry meals off our new friend and he insisted on giving them freely, then I went up on top of the hill to collect more water for us. Done and done.

We spent the rest of the day off trail hiking out towards Mooney Trail. After some bushwacking we made it to the old cabin and had lunch. On the way back we remet the 8 deer we had seen in the morning.
( 4.5mi offtrail route: http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=5819&M=6 )

We had the evening and night and morning to ourselves. I even carried her guitar out for great cave music. T'was a great trip.
