A stroll in the early morning so get a few miles in. I started at 5:15am but it was light enough at 5:00am. The morning was cool and I only saw 4 other hikers on the way back to the trailhead.

Wally and I hit the trail around 6:30 to cool temps. Half a dozen cars already at the trailhead and we saw a camp here and there. We saw a young coyote in the first mile and may have saved a bunny from being eaten! 😱We saw No wildflowers today but we did see a couple green mountainsides about 4 miles in. I haven’t done this loop for awhile and it was nice to get back on it. You can’t get away from all the burn but I still really enjoy being in the Supes!! Of course remembering many previous Supes hikes and planning future ones is always on the menu! 😁Always enjoy hiking with Wally and the great temps and almost constant breeze made it for a very enjoyable outing! Good times!!
Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!

A morning stroll with Denny to beat the heat. With the forecast warming up we hit the trail early and the breeze provided us with a cool hike. Black Mesa loop has a lot of burn but the recent rains are producing a nice green carpet. We kept a decent pace and saw several people out enjoying the trail on a weekday.
Thanks for coming out Denny.

A little 9 mile leg stretcher to shake off the Frog Tanks Loop. All on trail, no steep climbs finished by 9:30am while it was still cool. Left my camera at home but nothing this trip.

Another jaunt into the superstitions, hitting another loop that I recalled being a favorite of mine back when I hiked the area more extensively with its prominent views of Weavers Needle from various vantage points. A mix of old and new with a detour out to the top of Black Top Mesa (stunning views as ever), Aylor's Arch and the summit of Palomino (both new visits for me).

Got a slightly later start than I wanted to since I delayed my alarm clock in favor of getting a bit more sleep. The drive out First Water road was uneventful, with a handful of cars observed at the first parking area right off 88, another handful at the Canyon of the Waterfalls parking lot, none at the Massacre Falls/Jacob's crosscut lot, and a handful of vehicles at the road end.

The morning started cool, with my first few miles in shade or low angle sun - it was sad seeing all the fire damage, but there are definitely areas within the fire boundary that were less damaged or even seemingly unscathed. Fresh growth is already appearing on plants where the fire didn't burn so hot as to sterilize the ground. Scared up several bevy of quail as I walked through the undamaged/less damaged areas, and startled several desert cottontail at their breakfasts.

As one might expect for an area frequented by lots of people including horse traffic, the trail can be severely eroded in places - and as I was recently reminded, many hikes in the western superstitions tend towards the rocky side. My feet weren't thrilled by the end of the day, but the hike was worth sore and tired feet.

The hike out Dutchman trail started off in low desert scrub but quickly entered the burn zone where the fire seemed to stay in the First Water creek drainage. Eventually, as the trail climbs up and out of First Water creek, Weavers needle becomes visible. Unfortunately, the siphon fire traveled throughout the West Boulder Canyon complex and much of the vegetation is burned through this section.

Before heading up towards Black Top Mesa, I took a detour over to Aylors Arch - the turnoff is marked by a large fire ring, though there isn't a distinct path leading off the main trail, it's easy enough to route find into the arm of west boulder that leads around to the base of Palomino. Once in the drainage, there are occasional cairns leading the way and eventually you'll see a break in the left side with a use trail leading up towards Aylor's Arch. The climb up can be a bit steep...and it gets even steeper if you opt to aim for the top of Palomino Mountain. The fire cleared out much of the brush, making the approach much easier. The views from the top of Palomino were fantastic. The descent, however, was treacherous, with a lot of small shifty ball-bearing like rocks underfoot, so if you go, make sure to proceed with caution.

After my detour to see the arch, I returned to the trail and made my way up to Black Top Mesa. Sadly, the mesa took a lot of fire damage, but there are still some healthy saguaro on top in addition to a section of jojoba that seems to have escaped the burn. The views from the top of the mesa are spectacular. I had no idea that there are petroglyphs present on the mesa, so didn't try to find them - I'll have to return again another time to do so.

After spending some time taking in the scenery, I turned around and started making my way back towards the First Water trailhead via the Black Mesa trail, while making sure to turn around on occasion to take in the views of Weaver's Needle. Sadly, the area that the trail passes through took severe fire damage, with swaths burned clear to the ground and the area now resembling moonscape. Eventually, the trail hits a junction with Second Water Trail, and while there are burned areas, this trail appears less affected. Unfortunately the large cholla forests that I remember seem to be no more 😢

People: lapped 3 out of the gate, then crossed paths with someone headed to the top of Black Top Mesa while I was on my way down, saw a group of equestrians from afar as I was crossing the west boulder canyon drainage on my way up towards black mesa, crossed another coming in the Black Mesa trail as I was headed out, then relatively close to the TH, saw two groups of backpackers - one possibly set up for a dry camp on second water trail, the other group was going to see how far in they could get by sunset (it was already mid afternoon).

Wildlife: Desert Cottontail, a variety of lizards, a couple different types of squirrels, possibly a cardinal, multitudes of quail and plenty of other birbs....

With the re-opening of the western side of the Superstition Wilderness, I was anxious to see how bad the Siphon Fire roasted up the area. I asked Wally if he was interested in checking it out and was.

We met at the First Water TH at 630am and started off to do the loop clockwise. Right away, there was fire damage around the trailhead and the trail. Some of it appeared to be backburning, but as we made it past the Second Water/Dutchman junction, it was clear where the fire was.

Second Water trail had significant damages along the trail, but it was intermittent when the topography was rugged. Some areas were roasted, other survived unscathed. As we climbed up to Garden Valley, the full impact of this fire became evident. Garden Valley was burnt up as far as we could see. Big parts of this area was damaged by the Superstition Fire a few year ago. The grass that grew back burnt again. I am guessing we will see the complete replacement of native plants with grasses if the fires continue.

Hiking up Black Mesa Trail, the beautiful saguaro forest along the eastern side of the trail was roasted as well as the western side. There were a few patches of green left that escaped, but I'd guess 75%-80% was affected. Pretty sad site for sure. As we made it up to the plateau of the trail, the fire damage was total. It was moonscape with nothing surviving in some places. This was another area that was partially damaged by the Superstition Fire and all of that waist high grass I saw the last time up here earlier in the year did what grass does when fires come. I am guessing this area will also be transformed into a grassland, if it hasn't already. Hiking down the Black Mesa Trail towards the Dutchman there was significant damage as well. But, since the landscape is more rugged, some parts didn't get burnt at all. Yellow peak escape the fire on the western facing side. The drainage below was roasted. The fire seemed to follow drainages up. Along the trail itself, the damage was crazy bad.

The first look at the Dutchman trail coming down was depressing. Burnt trees and black ash was all that was left in some spots. The fire seemed to burn in the flat areas or drainages and didn't creep up the sides of the hills in some spots. Palomino was roasted on the north side and the trail between Black Top Mesa and Palomino was really roasted. I was curious to see if the amazing crested saguaro in this area survived and was relieved to see it had.

Hiking back towards Parker Pass, there were areas that were total burn outs and then areas with nothing. The fire damage was bad going up towards O'Grady Canyon. Parker Pass had bad damage in some areas as well. The fire missed a portion of the trail going north from the pass, but some sections were really burnt up. The many of the lush areas along First Water Creek were roasted to the ground. Closer to the junction with Second Water trail, the fire didn't damage the trail at all.

I knew I would be depressed hiking out here, and I was (am). But, I had to see how bad it was. And, it was bad. This place will heal and recover, eventually. Rains, new growth and time will bring it back. But, the 10000's of native plants burnt and damaged will probably not be part of that renewal going forward. I need to accept the Superstitions are becoming a grassland now. And grass burns frequently. I would guess we will see more and more fires as the grass becomes the dominant flora in the area. Another depressing thought.

I took a stroll through the Supes with Andy. Andy wrote a good detailed account. Second Water trail was burned but Garden Valley got the worst of it. Black Mesa was hit hard but it will wash off eventually. For those explorers there will be easier access on some side canyons and reveals of things hidden by the brush. My thoughts are to explore and see what I may find. I can't change what is but will make the most of what's left.

Tuesday morning with time on my hands. Started out at First Water trailhead 5:30ish. It was 73 degrees, no other vehicles and no other humans. There was a band of javelina just over mile in. Not sure which genre but definitely a band. Other than the javelina only quail and rabbits along the way. There were some early clouds blocking the sun for most of the hike. The trail is rocky as usual but mostly clear of overgrowth. Finished around 8:30a.

Another nine before eight. Finished at 7:59am. I was limping earlier in the week with some leg pain. Turns out it was just some back issue causing the trouble. Fortunately it went away so I went out for a stroll to see what would happen. Everything went well. I came up on a rollover on Second Water trail. Single occupant with no fatalities so I just rolled the tortoise back over and placed it in the wash next to the trail. No movement but I'm guessing he was still waiting for it to be safe. I saw the tail of a California king snake but he moved into the grass before I could get a photo. The temps were ok and I did see two other hikers on trail.

With the summer oven starting up soon, I thought I would sneak in one more loop in the Western Supes.

I arrived at the trailhead just before 6am. The lots was empty except for 1 car. I did the loop clockwise - heading up Second Water to Black Mesa and then back via the Dutchman.

The lack of rain lately is evident as I recall this area was as green as Ireland with the winter rains. Now, it's dried up and very, very grassy. All of the brittlebush and other blooms are gone with the exception of the now blooming saguaros. A few prickly pear holding on as well.

No snakes (bummer), tons of lizards and these interesting black/white bees that were buzzing all along the trail almost the entire hike.

The weather was very pleasant for most of the hike. It started feeling a little toasty towards the end, but still not hot.

I came across my first human as I was hiking up the last 1/4 mile to the trailhead. I also came across a horse rider heading out as well.

I very nice loop with plenty of solitude, beautiful scenery and fresh air.

The trail is in really good shape from start to finish.

I was behind on my hiking for the month so I added a Sunday morning stroll. No photos taken on this one but it was nice. I saw a few runners and several hikers along the way. The only fauna were bunnies and lizards moving about. I started at 5:30am but it would be light enough by 5am now.

Opted for something reliable since I didn’t have a ton of time today. Met Bruce at the trailhead and we got started at 0630. We decided to do the loop counter-clockwise, so stayed on Dutchman to start. Tons of vegetation. Plenty of water. Saw one woman near Parker Pass. She seemed a little out of place, but was in good spirits when we greeted her. Saw one other hiker a ways offtrail shortly before we turned off for Palomino Mtn.

Lots of water in the creek on our way to Palomino. We ended up walking thru a lot of tall grass, hoping nothing would be hidden beneath our feet. After leaving the creek, the steep climb up to Palomino/Aylor’s was pretty much as expected. Steep. Loose rock on the route. Dense vegetation, mostly foxtails, obscured the path in a few places.

Once up top, we walked out on the rocks below the arch, then climbed up on the rocks south of the arch. After a few minutes of exploring, we carefully headed back down to complete the loop.

We were both excited to climb up the rocky, sunny section of Black Mesa Trail. It got even more exciting when we startled a dback, which in turn startled us as we received a noisy lecture about disturbing his morning sunbathing. Black Mesa is super green right now, and covered with brittlebush and globemallow. Kind of impressive.

Uneventful, and quick, hike out on Second Water. Temps were warming up, but there was an occasional breeze. Saw one horseback rider at the trailhead. Bruce thought the hike was wonderful, since I stated “I think you’re right” at least three, possibly four, times. He’s never been correct that many times in his life, much less in a five hour span. Definitely a fluke. Besides the dback, saw one cardinal, lots of lizards, and not much else. Good hike and even good to see Bruce again!

I met Linda to a beautiful, clear, 54 degree, 6:30 am start.

The Supes are incredibly green and colorful right now. The major color flora players (in order of qty) are Brittlebush, Globemallow, Phlox, Desert Marigold, Fairy Duster, Fleabane, Lupine, Owl Clover, Blackfoot Daisy, Desert Chicory, Poppy. I'm not a huge fan of Globemallow, but the sheer number of them contrasting with the green grasses were quite impressive.

We headed on a CCW loop, easily crossing the flowing First Water Creek a couple two or 3 times. On the turn up Little Boulder Canyon to the arch, the water as also flowing nicely. We were able to keep our feet dry all the way. I don't think I've ever hit the start of the bottom part of the route correctly. The climb is steep, loose and overgrown (grasses) in many spots.

Scurrying around the top of Palomino Mountain is my favorite portion of this hike. The views and geology are top notch. Especially with all the green and flowing water out there.

I'm not a huge fan of the Black Mesa Trail #241. It didn't seem as bad going up, but the windless heat was starting to build. There are fields of Globemallow on this track that just don't quit. Quite impressive. We both commented that it did not feel like we were in the Superstitions.

It's going to be hell out here in a few weeks. The Foxtail is mature and will start drying out very soon. There is a bumper crop this year that will make off trail travel a PITA. It was 86 degrees when we finished just before noon.

Good times as always hiking with Linda, especially with all the complements she through my way today. She must be softening up in her golden years.

I had never done this entire loop before, and since we had discussed doing this hike a couple months ago, I suggested it for this day.
Got started to nice seasonably cool temps which seems to always be the case in the Supes.
Lots of flowing water and wildflowers made for a picturesque hike.
Good day on the trails. Thanks Kelly. :)

My object was to try to get 12 miles in today. So I left the 1st water trailhead at 6:50, out the Dutchman's and up Black Mesa. When I got around to Second Water I knew I was needing a few more miles so I took the Garden Valley trail. I don't know what the saddle's name is where the trail splits. There is a northern leg that loops around the north side of the hill 2430 on a topo and a southern leg. I took the southern leg down to the unknown named creek that joins into 1st water creek. Then up past Hackberry Spring to the northern leg of the Hackberry tail and back around to Second Water trail and to the 1st water trailhead. Well I beat my 12 mile goal.

Not a lot of people on the trail but I met 4 really nice people. A woman out for a few day backpack, we walked and talked until out paths separated. A couple in Garden Valley from Mesa. And joined a guy hiking from 1st Water Creek to just about Second Water trail. These made the day even more enjoyable.

South Mountain is into wildflowers more than the Supes are. But there were still some really nice blooms. A few patches of Desert Chicory, some beautiful Lupin, the Desert Paintbrush really stood out, and some huge fields of what I believe is Purple Mat.

Great weather, great people mixed with time to be alone and a couple cottontails. Oh yes, and one red-wing blackbird. A great way to spend most of a day!

I decided to make a trip to the Supes while the water is still there. At first I thought it was already gone because when I crossed First Water Creek along the Second Water Trail, it was dry there. But as you get deeper in, the streams are still running.

Started out with the Black Mesa loop, but this time I did it clockwise, taking the Black Mesa Trail first and heading east. To my memory, this was the first time i've ever hiked the Black Mesa Trail in that direction.

Once i got to the junction with the Dutchman, I headed further east on that and then took the Bull Pass Trail up, then took the Lost Black Mesa Trail further east until it hit the Dutchman Trail again. The Lost Black Mesa Trail is now very faint and overgrown in several spots. I hiked this once 11 years ago and I don't remember it being this bad. It's not a total bushwhack yet, but it's getting there. It was rather slow going along this spot of the hike.

From the Dutchman Trail, I headed north and then headed back on the Bull Pass Trail. Saw a backpacker taking a break at that junction, first hiker I saw for the day. Once I got back to the east end of the Black Mesa Loop, I took a lunch break. 2 horse riders went by. When they saw me, the first guy said, "We're on the right trail". then 10 minutes later they were doubling back asking how to get to the Black Mesa Trail. Turns out they were on the wrong trail.

Most of the foot traffic was on the way back on the Dutchman Trail. The first hikers I saw were an old couple, also asking about how to get to the Black Mesa Trail. they had accents and when they spoke to one another it was in a Slavic language. I asked if they were Serbs. They were Polish. I'm half Polish so we talked a bit about that. 5 min after we left I forgot the only phrase I know in Polish that means "how are you". This is the 2nd time this has happened to me while hiking, I need to work on that.

The last bit along the Dutchman Trail was a bit of a slog at the end. my minutes per mile was getting longer, but I felt like I was still moving pretty good. I looked at my GPS tracks and I did this same hike basically 11 years ago, but I added the summit to Black Top Mesa, which I couldn't imagine doing today for one hike. The Lost Black Top Mesa Trail was in better shape, but I was a decade younger too, so there's that.

A little chilly to start but it never got hot. Perfect weather, which will be gone soon enough until late October.

Hike to Black Top Mesa incorporating the Black Mesa Loop in a clockwise direction. Passed Wally just after leaving the trailhead. That’s twice in a week! :y:

1145 start. Slept in. Got caught up in a good book before getting off my duff and and out to the trailhead. That probably worked out better, though; it was chilly and a bit hazy this morning. It was gorgeous in the afternoon.

Pressed for time, I didn’t take a break until Bull Pass. I debated turning around there, but decided I could get to the top and finish before darkness set in. Proceeded up to the top for those special views. Headed over to the SE corner to check out the petroglyphs, but the light wasn’t right. I couldn’t see anything. Returned to Bull Pass and took a second break for a very late lunch before returning to the trailhead on Dutchman.

Finished a few minutes after five and was rewarded with a spectacular sunset on the drive home. Great day on the trails on a gorgeous afternoon.
