A quick loop to get some miles in before a long AZT hike. Started and finished early. Lots of hikers out but no fauna seen.

Got a crazy early pre-6am start because Andy is headed to the Phillipines the next day, so the first 2.5 miles were hiked in the dark. Just as well, I've done the Black Mesa loop enough times I can do it with my eyes closed as it is. Headed out on LDT, then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of green out like everywhere. I concur with Andy's description of Green Top Mesa.

Andy and Wally took a detour to the west end of the mesa to look for the lesser known sunburst with the word "oro" under it. They couldn't find it so they headed over to the east end, where I had already arrived. They found the broken sunburst and I found The End. Wally and Andy pointed out the other petroglyph on the back of the broken sunburst, which I don't remember from my previous trip up there, 13 years earlier. Pictures were taken.

On the way down Wally and Andy went back to the east of the mesa find the other petroglyphs/century old graffiti and were successful on the second try. I headed back down and back to the parking lot. On the way down the Bull Pass Trail, a big group was headed up and to where we just left. In the midst of them was @ScottHika. I talked with him a bit and he was gone, trying to catch up with his group. Wally later told me that this group was led by @John10s. Everyone in that group was moving uphill faster than I was downhill.

Wally caught up with me towards the bottom of Bull Pass and we stopped and had lunch once we were on the Black Mesa Trail, at which point Andy was already catching us. the hike back from there was uneventful. Made my usual stop at the Indian ruins in Garden Valley and saw the rock where everyone puts more pottery sherds. No hikers at all on Black Mesa Trail, and then lots of traffic on First Water, as usual.

This area has healed up quite a bit from the fire in '24. Very green and a lot less of the charred vegetation is visible, but it's still there. Weather was absolutely perfect. May have been about 70 once we finished. Chilly to start, but sunny and clear all day.

I had not been up on Black Top Mesa in a while so I in. The early morning start was nice and the trail easy going. The climb up Bull Pass and then Black Top Mesa was more than I remember but a good test.

We poked around the top and looked an the various etching made over the years. Andy and I made a second attempt to find the other sunburst and even thought I knew where it should be (near Stone Mountain rock) I could not see it in the sunlight until it was viewed from the opposing angle.

We passed a few HAZards on the hike down and stopped for lunch near Black Mesa trail after which we got to climb up to Black Mesa. I poked around on Black Mesa and found a few sherds. The mine tailings in Black Mesa are still visible since the burn.

The hike back was uneventful with several hikers out on the trails. We finished up while it was still nice out. A good day on the trail.

Having done this hike in late November 2025, when it had been almost 4 years since the previous trip, I didn't expect to be doing this one again for quite some time.

However, Tracey had a chance to hike with a friend she had last backpacked with some 5(?) years ago (AZT in the Mazatzals) and this was the hike they came up with.

Still not quite sure how my knees would hold out on the rough downhill stuff descending from Black Mesa toward Dutchman, I prepared for the possibility of turning back around the 3-mile point by bringing my tablet. So if I turned back early I could catch up on my reading while waiting for their return.

As it turned out, we were on such a slow pace that by time I thought to take stock of how my knees felt, we were almost halfway, so I stuck with it. However, well before reaching the Dutchman Trail I was beginning to wish I turned back. It wasn't so much the knees as the lower back taking a beating on the steep, rocky and sometimes loose tread... yup, on my LEAST favorite part of this hike.

Upon reaching the Dutchman Trail we stopped for a short lunch break, before heading back on the Dutchman. This is usually the part of the trail I've been on so many times in the same direction that I detest it. The only way I could do it on this day was to get myself into a sort of trance, dropping my mind into cruise-control for the balance of the hike. Good thing my subconscious mind paid constant attention to the trail as there were plenty of rough and rocky spots which could easily have produced a hard fall.

In the end, I'm a bit surprised how many photos I took in the last few hours, because even now I hardly remember taking them.

Chris was in town while traveling between CA and NM, so we made plans to hike today. Got started from First Water around 0730. East on Second Water, then south across Black Mesa.

Ran into an acquaintance (Shea) as we got onto Dutchman. Chatted for a moment, then continued in opposite directions. Headed up Bull Pass, which has seen some erosion, then up Black Top Mesa. Humid on the climb. Took a break at the top, then headed back down. Took Dutchman all the way back to the trailhead. The clouds for the final few miles were nice.

Lots of green out there. Great to see Chris again!

First hike of the year and first time back in the Superstitions since last spring. We started from First Water TH ~8AM, with quite a few vehicles already there, but the trails didn’t seem too busy. We stayed on Dutchman headed for Black Top Mesa, and water was hit or miss along the way--some crossings and drainages had small pools or a light flow; others were completely dry. But everything was greener and more overgrown with grasses than my last trip to the Supes, and wildflowers were blooming nicely.

We took Bull Pass Trail around the north side of Black Top and looped back around on Dutchman. The sky clouded over and remained mostly cloudy the rest of the day, so the lighting wasn't the best for pictures, but the stretch between Black Top Mesa and Palomino Mountain is always colorful and scenic. We stopped for a break along the drainage, then completed the loop and took Black Mesa Trail back toward First Water to make it a figure-eight and avoid repeating trails on the way out.

We saw a total of ~15-20 people on the trails over the course of the day by the time we finished. These were all familiar trails and locations, but it was a nice medium-length hike and good to get back out in the Superstitions.

First time doing the full loop in 3+ years. A cool morning but perfect conditions as the sun warmed us up. Lots of green and enough water to make it a challenge to cross washes without soaking the footgear.

Second Water Trail wasn't too bad, just rocky on the ascent toward Garden Valley. Black Mesa Trail seemed to fare a bit worse climbing up from Garden Valley, and a LOT worse on the descent from the high point. Not very enjoyable with all the jolting on this old body so I won't be chomping at the bit for a return.

With all the rains, I was curious to see how things were greening up along this loop. Additionally, the last time I did it, I wasn't aware of the Spanish Heiroglyphs on top of Black Top Mesa, so I figured I'd go have another look-see in hopes that I could find them (TL;DR: no, no I did not. *sigh*).

Headed out later than was ideal, thanks to a bout of insomnia and the decision at about 3am to turn off my alarm clock in hopes that I could get more than a few hours of sleep before waking up. With the later start, I suspected I'd have to scrap my plan to do the super loop that would have brought me around the far side of Black Top Mesa after summiting via the Bull Pass Trail and back down the Dutchman.

The road out to First Water Trailhead has definitely seen a bit of water damage with the recent rains, but it remains in relatively good shape. There were plenty of cars parked at the Crosscut/Massacre Falls Trailheads, a handful of cars were at both the First Water Trailhead and the overflow lot. I saw one person and their pup headed onto the trails while I gathered my gear.

Everything is greening up, and the burn areas are starting to repopulate. A bunch of the shrubs that had crisped have a decent amount of new growth evident. With the sun warm on the trail, there were plenty of butterflies and grasshoppers all around. In addition to all the green growth, there was plenty of water flowing. As I was hiking along, I mused that I somehow managed to block out of my memory how rocky the trails are in the western superstitions 🙃

When I hit the junction with the Dutchman Trail, I spied a large backpack (apparently abandoned during a rescue?). Made my way up the surprisingly damp trail to Bull Pass and on to the summit of Black Top Mesa, wandering all the way past the rock marked "The End" to peer over the south eastern end and looked at various rocks in that area, hoping to find the Spanish Heiroglyphs - but only succeeded in spying a very large chuckwalla, who was not happy to see me.

As I made my way down from the top of the mesa, I was surprised by another hiker on their way up. When I got back to Bull Pass, I pulled out my map and tried to gauge the additional mileage that would be added if I decided to try the super-loop after all. After a bit of dithering and rough math, I figured I'd likely be rolling into the trailhead at least an hour after sunset if I opted for the longer route. Since my feet were slightly annoyed with the rocky terrain, I decided to play it safe and stick with the shorter, more traditional route.

The hike out along the Dutchman Trail went by quickly enough, and I made it back to my car in time to drive out with the setting sun proving to be an absolute menace as I headed back out First Water Road. Looks like I'll need to see if anyone has conveniently marked the hieroglyphs should I decide to summit the mesa yet again 😂

originally I was going to class this as "light" but given how much time it took me to label everything, I figure it warranted an upgrade 😆 but then I gave it more thought and left it as light due to the actual quantity of blooms out there.

Nice hike in the superstitions this morning. We were hoping to go to willow springs, but decided to pivot given the rain. We did get caught in a few downpours that had water flowing in the trail, but overall not too bad. Nice low cloud views! 😊

The desert is green after all the recent rains, and there are quite a bit of wildflowers about! 💚🌱🌸

Arrived early to a surprisingly full trailhead! Only a hiker and his dog started hiking when we did. Eventually we saw some backpackers hiking out. One group on Dutchman a mile after we started, and another big group (girl scouts) at the end near the junction of second water and Dutchman.

Quite a bit of water around, mainly in isolated pools,

We started this hike with a we'll see but before the turn off for Willow Spring the rain hit. It rained hard for a little while then let up and repeated a few times. By the end it was nice out so an early start was probably not the right choice this time. A nice hike and nice to be out in the desert when it rains.
When I got home I realized I only took two photos. One of the deserted backpack and one of the low clouds. There's always next time. :)

A stroll in the early morning so get a few miles in. I started at 5:15am but it was light enough at 5:00am. The morning was cool and I only saw 4 other hikers on the way back to the trailhead.

Wally and I hit the trail around 6:30 to cool temps. Half a dozen cars already at the trailhead and we saw a camp here and there. We saw a young coyote in the first mile and may have saved a bunny from being eaten! 😱We saw No wildflowers today but we did see a couple green mountainsides about 4 miles in. I haven’t done this loop for awhile and it was nice to get back on it. You can’t get away from all the burn but I still really enjoy being in the Supes!! Of course remembering many previous Supes hikes and planning future ones is always on the menu! 😁Always enjoy hiking with Wally and the great temps and almost constant breeze made it for a very enjoyable outing! Good times!!
Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!

A morning stroll with Denny to beat the heat. With the forecast warming up we hit the trail early and the breeze provided us with a cool hike. Black Mesa loop has a lot of burn but the recent rains are producing a nice green carpet. We kept a decent pace and saw several people out enjoying the trail on a weekday.
Thanks for coming out Denny.

A little 9 mile leg stretcher to shake off the Frog Tanks Loop. All on trail, no steep climbs finished by 9:30am while it was still cool. Left my camera at home but nothing this trip.

Another jaunt into the superstitions, hitting another loop that I recalled being a favorite of mine back when I hiked the area more extensively with its prominent views of Weavers Needle from various vantage points. A mix of old and new with a detour out to the top of Black Top Mesa (stunning views as ever), Aylor's Arch and the summit of Palomino (both new visits for me).

Got a slightly later start than I wanted to since I delayed my alarm clock in favor of getting a bit more sleep. The drive out First Water road was uneventful, with a handful of cars observed at the first parking area right off 88, another handful at the Canyon of the Waterfalls parking lot, none at the Massacre Falls/Jacob's crosscut lot, and a handful of vehicles at the road end.

The morning started cool, with my first few miles in shade or low angle sun - it was sad seeing all the fire damage, but there are definitely areas within the fire boundary that were less damaged or even seemingly unscathed. Fresh growth is already appearing on plants where the fire didn't burn so hot as to sterilize the ground. Scared up several bevy of quail as I walked through the undamaged/less damaged areas, and startled several desert cottontail at their breakfasts.

As one might expect for an area frequented by lots of people including horse traffic, the trail can be severely eroded in places - and as I was recently reminded, many hikes in the western superstitions tend towards the rocky side. My feet weren't thrilled by the end of the day, but the hike was worth sore and tired feet.

The hike out Dutchman trail started off in low desert scrub but quickly entered the burn zone where the fire seemed to stay in the First Water creek drainage. Eventually, as the trail climbs up and out of First Water creek, Weavers needle becomes visible. Unfortunately, the siphon fire traveled throughout the West Boulder Canyon complex and much of the vegetation is burned through this section.

Before heading up towards Black Top Mesa, I took a detour over to Aylors Arch - the turnoff is marked by a large fire ring, though there isn't a distinct path leading off the main trail, it's easy enough to route find into the arm of west boulder that leads around to the base of Palomino. Once in the drainage, there are occasional cairns leading the way and eventually you'll see a break in the left side with a use trail leading up towards Aylor's Arch. The climb up can be a bit steep...and it gets even steeper if you opt to aim for the top of Palomino Mountain. The fire cleared out much of the brush, making the approach much easier. The views from the top of Palomino were fantastic. The descent, however, was treacherous, with a lot of small shifty ball-bearing like rocks underfoot, so if you go, make sure to proceed with caution.

After my detour to see the arch, I returned to the trail and made my way up to Black Top Mesa. Sadly, the mesa took a lot of fire damage, but there are still some healthy saguaro on top in addition to a section of jojoba that seems to have escaped the burn. The views from the top of the mesa are spectacular. I had no idea that there are petroglyphs present on the mesa, so didn't try to find them - I'll have to return again another time to do so.

After spending some time taking in the scenery, I turned around and started making my way back towards the First Water trailhead via the Black Mesa trail, while making sure to turn around on occasion to take in the views of Weaver's Needle. Sadly, the area that the trail passes through took severe fire damage, with swaths burned clear to the ground and the area now resembling moonscape. Eventually, the trail hits a junction with Second Water Trail, and while there are burned areas, this trail appears less affected. Unfortunately the large cholla forests that I remember seem to be no more 😢

People: lapped 3 out of the gate, then crossed paths with someone headed to the top of Black Top Mesa while I was on my way down, saw a group of equestrians from afar as I was crossing the west boulder canyon drainage on my way up towards black mesa, crossed another coming in the Black Mesa trail as I was headed out, then relatively close to the TH, saw two groups of backpackers - one possibly set up for a dry camp on second water trail, the other group was going to see how far in they could get by sunset (it was already mid afternoon).

Wildlife: Desert Cottontail, a variety of lizards, a couple different types of squirrels, possibly a cardinal, multitudes of quail and plenty of other birbs....

With the re-opening of the western side of the Superstition Wilderness, I was anxious to see how bad the Siphon Fire roasted up the area. I asked Wally if he was interested in checking it out and was.

We met at the First Water TH at 630am and started off to do the loop clockwise. Right away, there was fire damage around the trailhead and the trail. Some of it appeared to be backburning, but as we made it past the Second Water/Dutchman junction, it was clear where the fire was.

Second Water trail had significant damages along the trail, but it was intermittent when the topography was rugged. Some areas were roasted, other survived unscathed. As we climbed up to Garden Valley, the full impact of this fire became evident. Garden Valley was burnt up as far as we could see. Big parts of this area was damaged by the Superstition Fire a few year ago. The grass that grew back burnt again. I am guessing we will see the complete replacement of native plants with grasses if the fires continue.

Hiking up Black Mesa Trail, the beautiful saguaro forest along the eastern side of the trail was roasted as well as the western side. There were a few patches of green left that escaped, but I'd guess 75%-80% was affected. Pretty sad site for sure. As we made it up to the plateau of the trail, the fire damage was total. It was moonscape with nothing surviving in some places. This was another area that was partially damaged by the Superstition Fire and all of that waist high grass I saw the last time up here earlier in the year did what grass does when fires come. I am guessing this area will also be transformed into a grassland, if it hasn't already. Hiking down the Black Mesa Trail towards the Dutchman there was significant damage as well. But, since the landscape is more rugged, some parts didn't get burnt at all. Yellow peak escape the fire on the western facing side. The drainage below was roasted. The fire seemed to follow drainages up. Along the trail itself, the damage was crazy bad.

The first look at the Dutchman trail coming down was depressing. Burnt trees and black ash was all that was left in some spots. The fire seemed to burn in the flat areas or drainages and didn't creep up the sides of the hills in some spots. Palomino was roasted on the north side and the trail between Black Top Mesa and Palomino was really roasted. I was curious to see if the amazing crested saguaro in this area survived and was relieved to see it had.

Hiking back towards Parker Pass, there were areas that were total burn outs and then areas with nothing. The fire damage was bad going up towards O'Grady Canyon. Parker Pass had bad damage in some areas as well. The fire missed a portion of the trail going north from the pass, but some sections were really burnt up. The many of the lush areas along First Water Creek were roasted to the ground. Closer to the junction with Second Water trail, the fire didn't damage the trail at all.

I knew I would be depressed hiking out here, and I was (am). But, I had to see how bad it was. And, it was bad. This place will heal and recover, eventually. Rains, new growth and time will bring it back. But, the 10000's of native plants burnt and damaged will probably not be part of that renewal going forward. I need to accept the Superstitions are becoming a grassland now. And grass burns frequently. I would guess we will see more and more fires as the grass becomes the dominant flora in the area. Another depressing thought.

I took a stroll through the Supes with Andy. Andy wrote a good detailed account. Second Water trail was burned but Garden Valley got the worst of it. Black Mesa was hit hard but it will wash off eventually. For those explorers there will be easier access on some side canyons and reveals of things hidden by the brush. My thoughts are to explore and see what I may find. I can't change what is but will make the most of what's left.

Tuesday morning with time on my hands. Started out at First Water trailhead 5:30ish. It was 73 degrees, no other vehicles and no other humans. There was a band of javelina just over mile in. Not sure which genre but definitely a band. Other than the javelina only quail and rabbits along the way. There were some early clouds blocking the sun for most of the hike. The trail is rocky as usual but mostly clear of overgrowth. Finished around 8:30a.

Another nine before eight. Finished at 7:59am. I was limping earlier in the week with some leg pain. Turns out it was just some back issue causing the trouble. Fortunately it went away so I went out for a stroll to see what would happen. Everything went well. I came up on a rollover on Second Water trail. Single occupant with no fatalities so I just rolled the tortoise back over and placed it in the wash next to the trail. No movement but I'm guessing he was still waiting for it to be safe. I saw the tail of a California king snake but he moved into the grass before I could get a photo. The temps were ok and I did see two other hikers on trail.
