This is a hike to See Spring, See Canyon, and the Highline Trail to the Drew Trail.

I was jonesing for some color, and this was my last chance to get a color hike in for a while.

🍁 See Spring Trail #185
Based on the popularity of this trailhead (TH) in the fall, I knew I needed an early start. It was 40 degrees at 7:30 a.m. at the TH, and there were about six parking spots remaining. I passed a few people on my way to See Spring. There was still color remaining, but it was probably a week past prime. Getting there early bypassed the crowds, but it also didn't allow time for the sun to get high enough in the sky to light up the maples. There were two groups camping at the spring.

🍂 See Canyon Trail #184
Next, I thought I'd sample this trail to check out the color there. There were pockets of color, but nothing spectacular. Originally, I was going to hike to the rim and back, but the smoke from campfires had me turning around just above Nappa Spring.

I started seeing more and more people. Close to the turnoff for See Spring, I passed a conga line of 30+ hikers. I half expected to see a Greyhound bus when I got back to the parking lot.

⛰️ Highline - Drew from See Canyon
@Tortoise_Hiker turned me on to this section for fall color a couple of years back. It's his little slice of maple pie. Colors were good here, and I only saw two people (a plus). I went past where Denny normally turns around and continued to the Drew Trail. Some of the best color of the day was through this section.

Of note, there is trail work going on to improve the track. It looks like they might be working east to west and even doing some more reroutes. I hiked down one reroute that is still in progress about a mile west of the intersection with the Drew Trail.

Back at the parking lot, it was a zoo. Cars were parked more than three-quarters of a mile away along the side of the road, making it a single-lane road.

With autumnal colors passing quickly, I figured I had to get while the getting was good - so headed up to the See Canyon trailhead to get a dose of leaf peeping in during the week, in hopes of the trails being less populated.

After a series of tech problems delaying my departure, I was finally able to get on my way and arrived at the trailhead to find two other vehicles there and temperatures in the low 40s. I made my way up the trail, opting to head up the See Spring Trail when I arrived at the junction. Lots of color in the trees, and loads of leaves on the ground. It was nice to sit for a bit, listening to both the babble of the water and the wind in the trees while watching leaves fall. After enjoying the area for a while, I turned back to continue on the main trail. The See Canyon trail also has plenty of color - I continued up canyon until I hit a combination of apparently no more color to be seen, the smell of smoke from campfires on the rim, and my eyes stinging - presumably from the smoke.

I made my way back down the trail, stepping carefully - with the grade and all the fallen leaves on the trail, there were times I felt a little unsteady on the descent. As I got further down the trail, I started passing a somewhat steady stream of people heading in. When I got back to the junction with the Highline, I did a time check, and figured I'd head out towards the Drew trail to see if I could hit the section of maples that I recall passing through when I hiked the Drew-See loop earlier in the year.

It seems everyone was out to head up See Canyon, since I didn't pass anyone at all on the highline. It looked like someone might be out with a fat tire bike, as I didn't see any footprints on top of the tire tracks. Unfortunately, I had a hard turn-around time since I needed to be back in the valley for a prior commitment - and I didn't manage to make it to the section of maples that I had remembered. Regardless, it was nice to be able to wrap my hike up with some solitude.

When I got back to my car, there were fifteen others in the lot with another car pulling in as I was cleaning up and getting ready to head out. Definitely a popular area with the fall colors doing their thing...

It’s peak leaf peeping time below the rim and I decided to hit one of my favorites – See Canyon. I arrived at the trailhead at about 7am. There were some cars/trucks parked already, but there were still spots available and there were no cars parked along the road.

I saw a few triplogs mentioning the maples/oaks along the connected Highline Trail, so I decided to add a couple of miles up that trail as well. Very nice after about 1.5 miles in. Peak colors for sure.

After I made it back to the See Canyon Trail, I turned off on the Spring Trail and climbed up a bit and made my way to creek. I hike up that the rest of the way. I could hear the throngs of humanity along the trail as I slowly made my way up the creek.

The colors were really spectacular for sure. I hiked back down along the trail and made my way back to the creek and hiked down that the rest of the way back to the trailhead. So many people out enjoying the colors.

I wanted to get some long exposure shots along the creek and had some success. The contrast between the bright sunlight and the shaded creek made that tough. In some places, you just had to point the camera in any direction and take a picture.

I really love this trail. I am glad I was able to enjoy the fall colors this year.

The trailhead parking area was completely full and cars were parked along the narrow road in for at least ½ mile. Crazy busy.

I was camping nearby and contemplated checking out the colors in this seasonal tourist mecca. An eagle suggested an option for avoiding most of the crowds, which worked out as advertised.

I'd never been on the See Spring segment before, and coming down that drainage from the rim was unexpectedly dicey with a couple of dryfall downclimbs that might be recommended to have a partner to spot or to push the spot button if things don't go well.

The two JAL 747s parked at the KPAN terminal had transported their passengers over to Christopher Creek and I encountered just a few busloads of them before disappearing into the woods and finding my own route elsewhere.

Parked cars lined the road for more than a mile and I was happy to be complete with my little adventure before the clock reached 11.

It was a beautiful day to share a slice of Arizona's fall colors with the internet photographers and social media influencers. My pictures look the same as everybody else's. If you have an internet connection or watch the weather on the local tv news station, you've seen them already.

I wound up with an open morning so I ran up to See Canyon Trailhead. The dirt road going in was in good shape. Fine for most cars. There was one other car in the lot when I got there. I started hiking around 8am to blue skies and temps in the 40's. I hiked east on Highline for a couple miles then backtracked to the car. Trail was in good shape. There was a little fall color close to the turn around point. I think it is still a week or so early for the majority of Maples to change colors. It seemed like only 20ish% had color. Squirrel and bird was it for wildlife.
I dropped my jacket and empties off at the car and headed up to see Spring. A few more cars in the lot at 10am. Just a little color up to the See Canyon/See Spring signed junction at around 3/4 mile mark. Once you get going on See Spring trail the color picks up some. The only wildlife was the two dogs running at me barking around where the color picked up. The owners leashed them and I took the opportunity to check out the color and take photos while they continued up to the spring. I'd say the best color was the section from 1 -1.5 miles. Still over half of the leaves are still green.
when I finished See Spring out and back I checked out the trees around the parking area. I would say only about 10% have changed color so plenty more color chances in the next week or two. 14 cars in lot when I left around noonish.
I hit the little store across the street when you hit pavement for a drink and snack. I like to support the locals. Unbelievably it was my only stop all the way back to Mesa!! :o :y:
Room for much more color but I really enjoyed the outing and stayed upright the whole day!! :D :y:

A delightful day spent in See Canyon. Literally could not have asked for a better day! The weather was perfect!

We left the east valley at 7a and arrived at the Trailhead at 9a to a nice 53F. We headed up the canyon and lost the few people we saw within the first mile. We started seeing some red maples about 1.5 miles in. So many pretty red maples and golden oaks as we made our way up to the rim. Lots of water everywhere.

This was my first trip to See Canyon, and it didn't disappoint. There were a few rocky and/or steep sections, but overall it was easy going. The trail is marked the entire way with metal diamonds. There are a few very large trees down on the trail that require climbing over, but nothing problematic.

We stopped for lunch on the rim near the upper Trailhead. Lots of cars parked there, and a lot of loud traffic going by on FR300.

The way down was smooth and uneventful. We decided to take the short trail to See Spring which is a real gusher. It was nice to sit for a few minutes and enjoy the glorious water!

The Trailhead was unsurprisingly full upon our return, as was the roadside parking along the entry FR. We saw quite a few people coming and going within a mile of the Trailhead.

The drive out to Christopher Creek showed every roadside campsite full. There were quite a few open spaces during the morning drive in. No excitement on the drive home.

A wonderful hike with fall colors and pines. Win/win. Peak color should be within the next two weeks. None of the trees along the see spring trail have changed at all.

Katie wanted to hike on the Rim today, so we opted for the Drew-See Canyon loop. East on Highline to start. Warm. Zero breeze. Saw an Arizona Black rattler. Katie wondered why the only time she sees rattlers, I am present. It’s a mystery.

Took our time up Drew trail. Still no breeze. Once up top, we went north of the campground and headed west on Aspen, Carr, and General Crook. Finally, a nice breeze. Saw a horned lizard and a coyote.

Warm hike down See Canyon. The trail is in rough shape in places, and a fair amount of deadfall. Lost the breeze again. Skipped the spring. Some water in the creek, but not much. Nice loop, and good to catch up with Katie.

With some slightly cooler weather in the forecast during the week and some time on my hands, I figured I'd pop up to the rim country for another hike. I'd initially planned on hitting up one of the more popular hikes I haven't done (Derrick-Highline-Horton), but with rain over the weekend and recent triplogs mentioning sticky mud post precipitation on Derrick, I pivoted to another nearby hike that I anticipated might also benefit from a weekday visit. With my general preference for loop hikes, I saw that some had made a loop out of the See Canyon Trailhead, and I figured I'd follow their example.

Met up well after sunrise to make the uneventful drive up to the rim - spotted a few folk camping out on the road to the trailhead and arrived to find two other vehicles parked in the lot. There were some low clouds perched atop the rim when we arrived, and a chance of thundershower activity in the forecast for mid afternoon. With the recent rains and additional precipitation in the forecast, it was a bit sticky, but the temps were pleasantly cool.

Heading out from the parking area, we walked a short distance before crossing the creek to the See Canyon/Highline junction - opting to do the hike counter clockwise, we started our gradual climb up towards the rim - I imagine fall colors must be quite beautiful with the mix of oak and maple along with the evergreens. The initial climb went by relatively quickly with occasional views through the trees before we found ourselves at the barbed wire gate and the junction with the Drew Trail (marked with blue diamonds) where it was evident there was still more climbing to be done with the top of the mogollon still high above us. After a brief respite from the climb with some open views, the trail took off again at a steeper grade, surfacing on the rim near a camping area and crossing a dirt road. Once on the rim, the Drew continues through heavily thinned forest (turns out all the orange on the trees was to denote "leave tree" for logging operations - at least this is the convention used in Coconino NF) before hitting the General Crook Trail (marked with white chevrons). Walking along the General Crook started off as a nice single-track path, which eventually devolved into following an obvious old dirt road. While the track was easy to follow, the walking was decidedly mundane. The trail eventually reverted back to more of a walking path (marked with a combination of chevrons on trees and pink flags in the ground) while paralelling the Rim Road before departing the General Crook to start dropping quickly into the Christopher Creek Drainage via the See Canyon trail.

Aside from the steep descent, the hike back to the parking area travels through some really lush, wonderfully green forest (be aware that there is poison ivy in the area adjacent to the trail). The canyon was dry in the upper reaches, but we eventually passed an area where water could be heard (and seen below). Continuing down canyon, the water seemed to disappear briefly before resurfacing again. When we passed the junction with the offshoot to See Spring, neither of us was particularly interested in the detour, so we continued on back to the car.

During the hike, the clouds lifted off the rim, but looked to be building again as we were starting our drive back towards the valley. Thanks for joining me and driving, Wally! It was good to squeeze in another moderate-distance hike before the heat severely hampers my hiking.

Other hikers: one backpacker coming down the highline trail, one trailrunner along the general crook trail.

Wildlife: Heard an owl, got sassed by some fat squirrels, chased some butterflies (but didn't get any photos), photographed an uncooperative horned lizard, heard plenty of birdsong, and spotted a few deer on the rim.

The springs in the canyon must be flowing, though volume is unconfirmed (didn't go and check actual spring locations). Higher up in the canyon, the drainage is dry - the water surfaces, then goes underground, then resurfaces again.

Stephanie planned a loop on the rim and I went along to enough some cooler hiking. Highline/Drew trails went up, up, up. General Crook trail went up about 200 feet but seemed level. See Canyon went down, down down.

Stephanie took an inventory of the flora along the way. We saw 3 deer up on the rim. We only passed 1 hiker and a trail runner on the hundred flower loop. A breeze and some cloud cover helped with the humidity.

The trails up and down were well defined but the General Crook trail had a few direct roads and grass filled trails sections that made a GPS useful. It seemed the upper area was open and scenic but no elk were out and about.

The drive through Payson was easy and the road were not busy. Last tine through there was much more traffic. Thanks for the hike Stephanie and the nice triplog with the details.

Normally I would go up to See Canyon to check out fall foliage earlier in the month than this, but with the fall foliage being later than usual up there this year I decided to wait until today.

From the See Canyon TH we went east on the Highline Trail towards Drew to an area 1.5 miles or so from the TH that has a concentration of bigtooth maples for about 1/3 of a mile. Then we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up to See Spring. After that we went back to the See Canyon Trail and went up the canyon to about 7,000 feet of elevation.

The maples were really nice at the target destination on the Highline Trail -- I would describe the foliage as "substantial" or possibly even "extreme" in this area. The bigtooths are definitely in full bloom here!

We saw some nice color going up towards See Spring, but I would describe them as being "moderate" -- a lot of leaves were still green and there wasn't the abundance of color that I have seen there in the past.

While there were some maples "blooming" around the TH, the color was fairly light for the most part on the lower portion of the See Canyon Trail. However, as we gained elevation the fall foliage got much better. Once we got to about 6,700 feet or so the colors started to explode, and I'd once again describe the foliage in that section as "substantial" right now.

As the weather cools off I would think that there will be more color in the lower part of See Canyon in the coming days, but who knows.

The temperature was 36 at the start of the hike and it was 54 when we finished -- in other words a really nice day for hiking!

Synopsis
There is some nice fall foliage in some parts of this hike, and I am glad that I went up there today.

Two separate bear encounters on the canyon descent to the lake from the rim road. Neither one ran or seemed to care I was there. Also like yesterday, a big group of turkeys were in one of the meadows. A more peaceful lake than Woods Canyon, but as usual, lots of trash along the shorelines.

This was my first time doing this loop and it was enjoyable. We hiked up Drew and down See. We started at 7:15 to a basically empty trailhead.

Nice pleasant hiking along the Highline and up Drew. Some great forest through there. A lot of stately white pines, ponderosa and firs along the way. We lucked out with a few relatively deep mud puddles along the rim for Dot to lay in. The upper portions of See were excellent, but there was a bit of deadfall here and there. The trail started to feel pretty hot and humid for a bit and it dragged on some, as Dot and I waited patiently for her to get to some nice flowing water. The flowing section was a treat and Dot took several opportunities to cool down after that. A packed trailhead when we finished and a warm 86 degrees. Route Scout tracked a little high today, not sure why, but the miles seem high. We stirred up a Black Rattler along See.

First trip up north in awhile. The elevation usually gets me above 7000 feet. Today was no different.

I hiked out to a point that I’ve been to before. I wanted to do the loop with Drew, but I didn’t bring enough water (it was warmer than expected). I returned the same way.

81 degrees at 2pm when I finished. Didn’t see many people out.

Got started from the See Canyon trailhead around 0745 with Bruce & Chris. East on Highline. Lots of dried mud on the trail, must’ve been a mess a couple of weeks ago. Up Drew Trail. I always like ascending Drew thanks to the mostly moderate incline.

Once up top, we walked thru the campground to Carr Trail. Nothing exciting there. Carr & General Crook are just a walk thru the pines. Lots of downed trees. Cool breeze. I was happy to see some clouds forming.

Descended See Canyon, which was in relatively decent condition—better than the last time I was on it. Two tiny patches of snow near the top. A couple of water crossings lower down. One little boy gave me a flower, cute. More clouds made for some nice intermittent shade. Only really saw other hikers once below See Spring.

Nice easy hike, good conversation and banter.

Linda invited me to join her and Chris so they had someone to pick on all day. We did an old favorite CCW from the See Canyon TH. We were the first car in the lot, that was near full on our return.

Perfect weather heading through the green maples along the Highline with only a few MTB'ers encountered. The climb up drew was relatively easy.

When we reached the rim to the Fr 9350 Campground (which I was shocked to find out was a no-cost campground) , the smell of campfires and breakfast was in the air.

We made our way west on the Aspen and General Crook trail to See Canyon. There are some downed trees along this section that were easily navigated. I pointed out the Promontory V63 tree to Linda and Chris.

See Canyon trail was easy going, even with some blowdowns from the winter. We passed 2 women going up, until we hit the onslaught of people starting at the See Spring intersection.

Good hiking with Linda and Chris again, even though they picked on me unmercifully all day long. I'm not sure what I did to deserve that.

On Saturday 4/21, Milo and I took a 15 mile day hike up See Canyon Trail to Bear Canyon Lake. The forest road to the TH is a little rough for first 0.5 miles, but then it becomes much better. Easily accessible with passenger vehicle, just need to drive very slow.
There is still a fair amount of snow up on the rim, but it is patchy (depends on tree coverage and which way slopes are facing). Will probably be another two weeks before everything melts and roads are completely passable with cars. We had to cross about a dozen creeks (some of them wide) and the lake outlet. I had to pull Milo through the first two crossings, after that he was fine. Our feet were wet/dry all day.
We left TH at 7:20 am. First 3.5 miles is all uphill with about 1,600 ft elevation gain. There are no trail markers of any kind for the first two miles, but the trail is very easy to follow. There are tree markers after first two miles (probably since there is snow coverage from that point forward in the winter and it lingers well into April). The trail has very good tree coverage, which is nice in the summer to provide lots of shade for almost the entire uphill. However, the downside is that there is still some minor snow on the trail from about miles 3.0 to 3.25. Took us just under two hours to get to the rim, but we didn’t stop at all and didn’t even drink anything. We took a short 20 min break to have a snack and drink at the top and then headed towards the lake via FR300 and then FR89.
It was nice not having any vehicles on the road and the forest roads would be very easy to follow even in the winter. It was another 3.5 miles to the lake that took us about 1:30 including our 20 min break. Spent about 30 minutes eating our lunch at the lake at the bench (it is the only one, so I am glad we did) and left at around 11:30 am. Then we followed the trail around the west side of the lake for 1.5 miles (easy to follow with blue reflectors) to the southern end where a creek feeds the lake. It was another 0.5 miles to get to the farthest southern end with the small island outcropping. There is still snow covering trail on southern end, but easily navigable with the blue tree markings.
We were going to take Trail 208 from southern end of lake to FR208, but there was still lots of snow here. It would have been difficult to find the trail, so I just decided to go off trail and aim for FR208. After about 0.5 miles, we came upon FR208 as expected. We followed FR208 for 1 mile and then went off trail again for about 0.25 miles to cut off 0.75 miles and meet back up with FR300. I think next time, I will just stay on the forest roads because the shortcut was down/up/down/up through some fairly steep terrain (especially in winter with snowshoes, it would be much harder). Aimed for off target to the west side so that we could easily find See Canyon trail by turning left.
It was another 3.5 miles back down See Canyon to TH. We left the top around 1:40 and made it back down in about 1:40 at around 3:30 pm
The 15 miles took us 7:45 that included about 1 hour of breaks, a little route finding through the snow, a little backtracking to find optimal places to cross creeks, and stopping for pictures. Would definitely do this hike again (in the summer and winter), but I think I will go counterclockwise especially if I go in the winter so that it is easier to follow trail from FR208 to the lake and it would be shorter (3.5 + 2.7). 15 miles in winter with snowshoes would definitely take more than 8 hours, so it might be just a trip to southern end of lake and then back out the same way. I included picture of our actual route (red) and the trail route (blue) had we not went off trail.
