After dinking around in the Chiricahuas in the morning, I pulled into Safford in the afternoon and met up with Chad at Dankworth Pond State Park. It was a nice reunion, I hadn't seen him since 2017. His hiking partner joined us for a lap around Dankworth Pond. Uneventful except for a bird acting a bit weird on the back leg of the loop. But it flew away, so no rescue needed apparently. Not much has changed here, but always nice to revisit every half decade or so.

We then jumped in the vehicles and went over to Roper Lake State Park and did another lap around the lake there, while catching up on 7 years worth of news. A lot has changed there and most of it was pretty decent actually. It was weird though. The campgrounds were packed, but everyone was staying in the campgrounds. Just a few fishermen at the east end of the lake by the dock. No one on the island or wandering the park at all. It was good to see the lake again, even though it was pretty low. I still remember my first time here, catching a 6lb largemouth bass off the shore. A lot of good memories here. It was good to be back, although I wouldn't be staying here on this trip. I still had a few miles left to go before I would camp. After the lap and catching up a bit more, I headed out to my campsite for the next 3 nights. I included my drive out there in this photoset, as the views on the drive were pretty sweet. I would meet up with Chad again in the morning and we would go on a long overdue hike together again. I think it was the first hike we had ever done together, back in 2012. Revisiting old places and old friends never gets old.

First the inner loop with Addie at Dankworth.
Then the out n back to the upper Noon Creek crossing solo.
The canyon tree frogs are now singing all up and down the canyon.
Creek flow has slowed down a bit, snow melt just about done.
Lot's of blooming cactus, dragonflies and frogs.
Before heading home I had a sunset campfire & coffee at RTM CG.

First stop at Roper to see my buddy and meet the new Park Manager.
2nd was up Jacobson Canyon.
John's dam looked awesome with all the snow melt flow.
The canyon was flowing good and I didn't want to, but had to get the shoes wet for several crossings up to the swimming hole.
No swim today ... but soon!
Lot's of tall green grass, yellow and purple flowers and endless little waterfalls all up the canyon.
Last stop was at Dankworth for sunset and another friend visit.
Thumbs up for my afternoon!

2 random miles across Oak Draw :next: Under Stockton Pass through a tunnel :next: 2 random miles across P Ranch Canyon back to the start for the loop.
Spectacular rock formations is what always brings me out there and I saw many new ones on this day.
Dramatic stormy skies and strong winds throughout.
No wildlife spotted, only 1 single poppy seen ... and the find of the day ... one perfect 2 inch arrowhead along a wash! I'm talkin' a top 10 all time arrowhead find for me!
Oak Draw is always good to me!
Quick stop at Dankworth SP for sunset before returning home.

Mosquito hell on the back portion.
Big ole' horned lizard interaction on the mesa.
Found half an arrowhead at "the spot".
Lot's of dragonflies along the pond.
Friendly talk with a fisherman before leaving.

Plan A was somewhere up 366. Arrived to see a little too much lightning hitting on top.
Plan B was Dankworth. Just the inner loop and around the pond watching storms.

Wasn't sure what weather I was gonna get on the mountain today?
Sooo ... I started on top at Ladybug Saddle and just worked my way down the mountain hitting favorite shorty's.
Ladybug Peak - Awesome views up & down. Dramatic skies 360 and a few ladybugs on top (still early for the masses).
Twilight Spring - I skipped the spring in favor of the Heliograph overlook view around the mountain.
Jacobson Sawmill - Just to Cluff Dairy to check on the apples. Ping pong ball size, but lots of them. First clap of thunder overhead.
John's Dam - Thunder to the south as I made my way down. No water flowing over, creek above dry.
Dankworth Pond - Last stop of the day to visit a friend and take in the sunset.
Cool temps up high, humid down low, little lightning & thunder here and there and the evening's sunset was good ... A good day!
