Joe, Linda, and I met at 5AM and headed south to meet Matt at Finger Rock Trailhead at 6:30AM. Quite a few cars in the lot as we started up toward Kimball. It had been 6+ years since I'd hiked in this part of the Catalinas, and it was nice to be back--I'd forgotten a lot of the details but remembered that it was steep. Sure enough, it was still steep.

The trail was fairly busy on the way up, but the crowds thinned out after ~ two miles. We took a few breaks along the way, and Matt shared the finer points of smoked pork and put the rest of our meager snacks to shame with his enviable bag of ribs :). He hung back at the saddle near Linda Vista while the three of us continued on to Kimball. It started to sprinkle as we closed in on the peak, we thought for a few minutes that we might end up caught in a downpour, but Route Scout Radar indicated (correctly) that it might not be so bad after all.

I was surprised again at how little I remembered about the upper portions of the trail, but I remembered turning around short of the actual peak with my friend in 2018. Looking back later at notes from that hike, she wasn't feeling well that day, so I'll chalk it up to courtesy, not ignorance, for not reaching the actual peak that day :). When we got up there today, the views were much better than the turnaround spot last time...Lemmon, Picacho, Cathedral Rock, Ventana, and more. Someone had left a register in a Ziploc bag in the summit cairn about a week before. The bag already had holes, so that'll last about 20 minutes up there.

Areas to the N/NE appeared to be getting hit hard with rain, but we ate lunch at the summit with a few more raindrops and even a couple of stray snowflakes. Before Joe froze, we headed back down through more sprinkles and regrouped with Matt near Linda's Vista to hike down the new Pontotoc Trail. There wasn't much vegetation along the upper portions of Pontotoc, and the constant switchbacks were a bit gratuitous at times (Matt said they add 1.2 miles to the old trail), but the gentler grade and less rocky tread made the descent very pleasant, and the views and clouds were nice. Farther down, we hiked past a lot of healthy ocotillo and prickly pear blooms, then closed out the loop as another round of dark clouds and some thunder rolled through.

I enjoyed being back here and hope to get down to Tucson more often. Fun conversations with the group, and it was great to meet @Mountain_Rat, hike with Joe and Linda again, see some new trails, and finally reach the real Kimball. We drove through a few brief downpours on the way home but never got more than those limited sprinkles on the hike, so it worked out nicely.

Trying to balance out time on the trails with time in the gym these days. End of a long week of tough gym workouts, but wanted to get up Finger Rock in prime time. Almost perfect out there today, 60's & 70's the entire morning.

Hiked this with my wife… a beautiful day but I think this will be our last off-trail hike together.

Started at 8:30am, made it up to Table ok. It was an elevation workout, but the challenge was the off-trail going up that little canyon. It is steep in spots, the dead grasses are slippery when stepped on, and some of the rocks that look stable in the ground are not. We took in the views at the top for a half hour over lunch, dangling our feet off the edge, then started down. By the way, the fireplace is rebuilt, a nice little one with three small camping spots nearby.

On the way down, she lost her footing on a loose boulder and fell forward. As she did, she fell a couple of feet face forward, and hit a rock. Thankfully it didn’t do any serious damage, we were very very fortunate. But it left a deep gash a quarter inch above her eye that gushed a lot of blood, and another cut and big bruise an eighth of an inch below that eye. How it didn’t puncture her eye, or knock out teeth or something I don’t know. Once I got the bleeding under control I helped her down the rest of the canyon, then we had to still hike three more miles out before getting out just after 6pm, just after dark.

Took her straight to urgent care. They cleaned her up, glued her big gash, gave her a tetanus shot, and prescribed an antibiotic. She had been home resting for the last day, a pretty nasty shiner but no broken bones or concussion.

Being out and off trail is so much fun, particularly in amazing spaces like that. But the risks, especially with someone one you love, as we get older (now in our early 50s), I guess you have to make hard decisions. I think that means no more off-trail hikes together… at least on mountainsides, or miles from a trailhead. Would love to hear what everyone else thinks about this, if you think I’m off base?

I'm focused more on working out in my gym this summer than hiking. But wanted to get out for a few hours and be back home early. Simple out and back to the dam. Hazy & overcast was the theme of the day. The heat didn't really bother me, it was the non-stop swarm of flies buzzing around my head, they about drove me nuts.

Did the annual Kimball hike with Daniela. Got started just before 0700 to a delightful 39 degrees. I loved it, Daniela did not. The trail was as expected—decent for the first three miles, rough for the next four miles. Lots of water crossings—all easy. We made it to the summit without too much whining. Had a nice lunch break—steak and pastrami.

The hike back down is never as fast as I want it to be, but it was uneventful. Lots of bees and lizards. Plenty of flowers and grass. Great day!

Convinced my wife to pick me up at Pima Canyon so that I could check this hike off my list. Unseasonably warm this morning, even at 4:30 AM when I hit the trail it was already 83 degrees and almost 20 degrees warmer than every other morning this week. Uneventful going up, hit Mt. Kimball and ate really quick. Then started down Pima Canyon. Trail is steep, in poor shape and overgrown. There is a well fed bear roaming around up there, I've never seen scat so big in my life.

Glad to finally get this done, but not in any hurry to do this again any time soon.

Fairly impressive amount of trail work has been done since the fire. It's a lot cleaner than it was the last time I did this trail. Though this is another trail that takes longer to get down than going up. The sections of scree and loose dirt didn't slow me down going up, but did end up skiing down a couple of spots. Which got my attention and I had to tip toe through a few patches of steep loose dirt.

Haven’t done this one in a couple of years. Met Kelly & Daniela at the carpool lot at 0500 and drove down to Tucson, starting the hike around 0645. Cool to start, but nowhere near cold. Passed two hikers not far from the trailhead, then saw nobody else until we were at the summit. Trail is rough, but in decent condition, and the best shape of the several times I’ve done this hike. Some burn is noticeable up high, but really not too bad. I was dragging on the uphills, whined a lot, but survived.

Took a long snack break at the summit, enjoyed the views, chatted for a moment with the one other hiker up there. Straightforward hike back down. The breeze was nice, but warm for the last two or three miles. Saw less than a dozen hikers on the way down. Did see two coyotes on the drive in, and two coatimundi about halfway down, but they were too fast for pics. Great day, great hike, and good to see Kelly & Daniela.

linda invited me to join her and daniela for a mount kimball hike
this would be a new one for me in an area i haven't done much hiking in
left town at 0500 and got started around 0645
the first three miles of this hike are on good trail at an easy grade
the ascent gets much steeper past the dam
i thought the trail was in good condition even with some big steps and a little loose rock
we turned away from the canyon at about five and a half miles, with the last stretch at a more moderate grade
nice summit with great views and we took a long snack break
there was one other hiker up top
i was happy to have a pole on the steep part of the descent
linda spotted a couple of coatimundis on the way down
there were quite a few wildflowers in pima canyon
enjoyed the sky island terrain:
plentiful saguaros, craggy canyon walls, some interesting bedrock in the creek bed and flowing water
very nice to meet daniela and good to hike with linda again
a great hike :)

Slow pace in a group. There's quite a bit of water in the canyon, some of it coming out of rocks. Explored the canyon a bit. Found a tortoise in a rock cave. Managed to stay dry and unscathed. Found a dam at 32.359260, -110.931436.

Easy stroll up Pima Canyon with my son who came down for Spring Break for a few days. Good to connect with him and show off one of my favorite neighborhood trails. He usually hits Shaw Butte, Trail 100 and North Mountain in regular rotation, so a lush canyon with flowing water was a treat for him. Went up to the dam, took a few pictures and headed back down.

Trail is in great shape, there is a volunteer trail crew out there making significant progress with cutting back all the brush & cactus. Plus also rebuilding some of the steps and clearing up the trail. They were out when we were on our return trip, so made sure to thank them. Water is flowing, but with little effort you should be able to keep your feet dry.

Hiked with Patricia and Laura up Pima Canyon. We made it almost to Pima saddle. I was impressed by how good the trail was compared to how it was 6-10 years ago. A few different groups have recently maintained it including Friends of the Catalinas, and the Forest Service. Today's high was supposed to be 78 and it felt a bit hot at times in the sun. The shade in the canyon was very nice!

Took Mike B out to Pima canyon for his first time ever. This was just meant to be a preview of the area. Because of lack of time, we only hiked a total of 0.5 miles. When there's more time, we'll go back and hike further into the canyon. The trail is much nicer than it was in the past because of maintenance crews.

Hiked with Sarai down Pima canyon trail to about 2.5 miles in. In the first mile we saw some volunteer trail maintenance people working on the trail. We talked for a few minutes and they said they were with a non-profit called "Friends of the Catalinas". By the way, I must add that the trail was in great shape for the first 2.5 miles or so. Shortly after seeing the maintenance workers we saw a roadrunner walking near us and it wasn't too afraid. After hiking around 2.4 miles, we stopped in a canyon crossing and after a few minutes saw a coatimundi coming up the canyon in our direction. We were able to get a good video of it. There were some nice cottonwood trees in the canyon and some oak trees also. Didn't see any sycamore trees in this part of the canyon. Perhaps higher up there would be some. We turned around and this point and hiked back to the trailhead, getting there just after dark.

After work hike and dodging thunderstorms as usual of late. Stunningly green, lots of clear water in the creek, and an awesome lightning show over Tucson to watch while hiking out. One black-tailed rattlesnake sighting.

With all of the rain, it is swampy and almost tropical back here. About the greenest I've ever seen the lower portions of the Catalina's. Just went to the dam and back and the water was flowing. Had to do about a half dozen or so stream crossings.
