My plan for this backpacking trip didn't really work out because of the lack of water. The only available water appeared to be within 1 mile of the trailhead from a series of 4 springs that collectively appear to be called Nelson Place spring.

If I would offer a suggestion it would be to explore the Pine Mountain Wilderness via dayhiking. The Salt Flat campground area is pretty nice, though you have to bring all your water with you.

I would also warn potential backpackers that other triplogs reporting water for "several miles along the start of their hike" probably aren't really counting their distance and don't realize that the water ends after the first mile.

While the Nelson trail was in good shape, most of the other trails are in poor condition. The worst was the Salt Flat connector trail, and the second worst was the Verde Rim trail. Surprisingly you will find cows along every trail, including at the top of Pine Mountain itself!

I ran through 90% of my water when I was only halfway through my Saturday loop, likely due to the higher than forecast temperatures, so I struggled to finish the trip.

Takeaways:
The spring fed areas along Nelson trail are very nice, and I was surprised to see all the trout.
Pine Mountain is an enjoyable destination, and there are great views of the entire Mazatzals from the top.
The rest of the trails suffer from significant overgrowth. Some also suffer from not-existingness in sections. There was easily a half mile stretch of Pine Flat trail where I didn't see any evidence of a trail.
For some reason, once you get away from Nelson trail by more than a quarter mile (except Pine Mtn itself), you will only see Junipers, no pine trees.

Driving: Lots of triplogs speak to road conditions. I would say the last 7 miles to the trailhead is rated a high clearance rd. I think 2wd with limited slip differential or else 4wd is helpful due to the rough road. From highway 17 to trailhead took 60 minutes. From trailhead to highway 17 took 56 minutes.

A lifesaver. Collectively the 4 different areas water came out of the ground probably add up to 100 gallons per minute.

Escaped the stress of the city for a quick solo backpack trip (and to successfully complete this loop which my wife and I got lost on previously).

Upon arrival at the trailhead at approximately 11AM I ran into a surveyor for Mexican Spotted Owls. He told me his plan to begin hiking that afternoon, set up sensors in various places, then return after nightfall for the results. I thought my trip was interesting enough going solo- I could only imagine what his night was like trekking around off-trail. Good for him!

Very pleasant loop. Cool temperatures! Windy! Views at the top outstanding. I really enjoyed the topo map available on this site, but carried the GPS just in case. I found the Verde Rim trail south of Pine Mountain to be in much better shape than two years prior when we got lost and cut up by manzanitas. More cairns and easy to find.

Camped somewhere nearby the "best kept secret of Pine Mountain Wilderness" . Beautiful solitude.

I love this area- 18 miles of tough road helps to keep it isolated. Next time I'd like to extend the loop by going further around the Nelson trail to Pine flat trail and forego the shortcut. Or try the 76 trail to the road. Or try the bushwhack and Verde Rim further to the north. What is Cloverleaf exactly?

Very little water to be found other than the bountiful Sycamore Creek. The forest is extremely dry and dead wood is everywhere- ominous seeing the remains of past fires in the area.

Wow poorly marked trails. We were up hunting bear and thought that we would make a long loop around and have some get views of some canyons. Little did we know that the trail markers where off. People have created their own trails and marked them with the stacked rocks. So the 12.5mile turned into 15-16 and way more time. The GPS I had does not have maps I've never needed the map. Very nice views but frustrating. Trip ended up not hunting much had to find the disappearing trail.

I did the reverse of moovyoaz's loop with my girlfriend the weekend of April 2-3, 2011. We camped at the trail head, which was easy to find and offered about 5 sites with fire pits, picnic tables, etc. There was a Honda civic there, if that gives any road quality indication. I'm sure he had a bumpy drive, but it seemed the car was still in one piece.

Anyway, Civic guy (Jay?) came out of the woods around 11 pm totally dehydrated after setting up camp at the peak and deciding to come back due to lack of water. He had taken the Nelson Trail to Willow Springs trail to the peak, set up camp, and come back.

The next morning we decided to reverse moovyoaz's loop, hoping that we would find water at the springs noted on the western slopes of the map, and especially near the camp site. If we didn't find any, we could easily return to the trail head that same day.

So, the report: there was running water all along Sycamore Creek, downstream of Black Alder Spring, noted on the map. Some parts were better than others but I'd say it was at least 20 gpm. On the Western slopes, Beehouse Canyon and Beehouse Spring were bone dry. I can't report on West Prong Sycamore Creek's lower reaches, since we took the shortcut trail. There were pools at Bishop Spring, in Bishop Creek, and at the campsite (also Bishop Creek). None of them appeared to be moving. They had bugs but were clear (no green). Bishop Spring had a cow pie at the water's edge. We used the water from Bishop Creek, in conjunction with a steripen treatment and boiling, and did just fine with that combination. Along the rest of the trail, we didn't really see any water. There were a couple very green and nasty looking pools higher up Sycamore Creek on the Eastern slopes, but nothing very drinkable.

The reverse route was a good way to go. I think we would have been mighty thirsty by the time we hit camp, had we gone clockwise. It was nice to bang out half of the elevation before refilling water.

The spring itself, where it's noted on the map, was pretty dry. Bishop creek, at the trail crossing, had pools of water. One had a cow pie in it. All had mosquitoes. Bishop creek at the camp site was the same, minus the cow pie. Decent pools of water. We used Steripen as a pre-treatment, and boiled the rest before drinking. No ill effects.

From I17 and Happy Valley to Dugas Rd exit, 50mi 40min. From I17 and Dugas Rd exit to TH, 18mi, 60min. All worth it. For Dugas Rd/FR 68 I'd recommend high clearance. I don't think a passenger car would make it safely for the last 5 miles or so. 4x4 was not needed.

This is a highly recommended hike. Ponderosa Pines, Alligator Juniper, Oak Trees, Sycamore Trees, running creeks, birds, Elk etc., etc. you are in and out of all of these during the hike. There is allot of shade from the trees on this hike, but there are also exposed areas. I'd consider the hike moderate for the most part, with a few difficult sections on the climb to Pine Mountain and down into Beehouse Canyon (Steep and Rocky). A GPS with the track is highly recommended because the trail is overgrown or light in spots on the southern section of the Verde Rim Trail and the Shortcut Trail.

There are cairns in most of these sections to help you, as well as 4' long poles laid down on the down slopes for erosion protection. There is deadfall around the loop, but nothing too hard to navigate.

The views on the Rim and on top of Pine Mountain were nothing short of spectacular. Make the short trip to the top of the peak. Snow topped Mt Humphrey's to the North, Four Peaks, Weavers Needle, 5024 and the Flat Iron, Horseshoe Lake to the South and the Bradshaw's to the West.

We saw an Elk cow and 2 babies but were unable to get pictures.
Also many Cottontail Rabbits.

There are many options for camping at the TH or along the trail.

If only my GPS hadn't gone kablooey at the trailhead!

My son and I did this as a backpacking trip, but there's little we saw that you couldn't see in an aggressive dayhike. The burn zones are starting to fill in with saplings and underbrush, so while there's no shade, you'll still have plenty of greenery at your elbows.

All the springs above Nelson were dry, but we did find some deep pools of water in the creek-beds, and skeeters feasted while we filled bottles to take back to camp to treat. Not really recreational, so we axed our option of a second night.

We did bag Pine Mountain - which is a 500' climb from the Verde Rim trail, and worth the trouble.

Without a functioning GPS to double-check our logic, we misinterpreted my topo (actually a copy of the one here) and camped maybe a mile east of the Secret Campsite, which we found later that morning.

We didn't try to find the shortcut - but just returned via the Nelson.

Oh, and if you left your sleeping bag just shy of the Verde Rim / Nelson Trail junction, its still hanging in the tree.

What a great day for a hike, weather was overcast not hot. This hike is one of my favorite loop hikes, lots of solitude. Trails hiked today in clock wise direction, Trail #159 Nelson Trail #12 Willow Spring, Trail #161 Verde rim trail, Trail #166 shortcut, Trail #165, Pine Flat then Trail 159 back to trailhead. HAC member Moovyooz has a excellent trip report on this hike. Trails 159, 12, 161 over to the junction with trail 14 in excellent shape. Trail #161 from this point to Trail #159 should be hiked by experience hikers, with good route finding skills, plus have a updated topo map of this area along with a compass or GPS. Trail 159 to #166 good shape, trail #166 has lots of cairns to follow, trail #165 back to trail #159 is in excellent shape. Forest road 68 into salt flat campground was graded in excellent shape, high clearence vehicle recommend or 4 wheel drive on forest road 68.

It was time for my annual April mission into the wilderness. At this point I'm no longer motivated by catching the largest or the most trout, usually that means fighting crowds. Instead, I prefer to go further out and look for wild trout or areas that offer trout most people don't fish for. This is why I chose Pine Mountain for my April trip. This was going to be an overnight trip, but I always leave the door open to make it two. It was Monday so I figured there would not be large crowds especially since the reports I have read describe a long and rutty road to get there. Not to disappoint, the reports were correct. The road after Dugas really sucks and you can't go very fast but you don't need 4 wheel drive.

I found the trailhead parking lot empty and quickly finished loading up. As usual I took my fly rod and a small selection of flies and such. Sycamore creek has trout and I saw a few within the first mile of the hike so I was excited about that. The Nelson trail was very nice for the first couple of miles. Here you go left on the Willow Springs trail that leads you uphill at which point you leave your last source of water (willow / Pine springs) for awhile so fill up. I did and it was hot that day and I wish I had carried more water later. I made my way up to the top of Pine Mountain along a burned out section with lots of small new pine trees growing (no shade here). The last 1/2 mile was pretty steep all the way to the top. The views however were spectacular just as reported. I could see 4 peaks to the south and Mt. Humphreys to the north.

After a short break I continued in a southerly direction on the Verde Rim Trail. Here the trail begins to drop down off the rim and it looks like it is going towards the Verde river which is not the way I wanted to go. I got anxious and bushwhacked my way in a southwesterly direction instead of staying on the trail. I would not recommend doing this! I would stick to the trail and it should lead you back to the junction with the Nelson Trail by Bishop creek. I did find the trail again after following a dry creek bed for a mile or so. I camped by the junction of the Verde Rim trail and Nelson Trail. Earlier reports indicated trout lingering in pools of water here. I did not find any fish but there was enough water to filter (I boiled it too). This was a nice place to camp and I was serenaded by frogs that night.

Make sure you are full with water before you leave. The next morning I continued on along the Nelson Trail. I passed up on the "Shortcut" trail and went on to the junction with Pine Flat trail where I turned right and headed north. The trail was nice but no water until I reached Beehouse Spring. From there it's just a mile and a half back to the parking lot. I stopped and fished a little in Sycamore creek and caught one small trout. I'll do this hike again but plan on bringing less gear and I'll leave the fly rod in the truck.
