The weather couldn't have been better ... sunny, breezy, and maybe in the 50s to start. Never much over 70. Tons of yellow flowers. The hillsides were golden! Very little in the way of fall color yet, but that didn't matter with the surprise of fall flowers!
After getting 11 miles done, with four to go, I decided that we should try to bag Mazzy too. After all ... we were already right there! (And my legs were already totally bloody from the manzy and catclaw on the divide trail!)
So with no research, no track, and no route, we just headed up hill. Would've been nice to have somebody along who had hiked it before!
There are two cliff sections lower down. Both can be bypassed, or climbed, depending on your enthusiasm. The first is easiest to go around on the right, the second is easiest to get by on the left. After those, climbing the ridge was the easiest, until some sketchy climbing presented itself and we dropped into the thick manzy in the gully. There were signs of use and we eventually managed to get above it all and make the final ascent to the peak. It took 2 hours to summit from the Y-- junction!!
Lots of HAZ names in the summit register! We took a short break before heading back down, shaving about 15 minutes off our ascent time. The last four miles on Y-- took an eternity, and we both ended up switching on headlamps before the end. Awesome day!
The views from Mazzy peak may be the best I've seen. I'll have to double check, but I think I could see as far as Mt. Graham. And possibly Lemon. Definitely the White Mountains, Four Peaks, Ord, Flatiron, Sierra Estrella, SoMo, Red Mtn, White Tanks, Bradshaws, Pine Mtn, Sedona, Bill Williams, Sitgreaves, Kendrick, Humphreys, and of course the rim. Incredible day! |

| | Plenty of small pools to filter from. Water could be heard trickling over the rocks and down the drainage. Probably more than a qpm, but not quite a gpm. | | _____________________
