It had been a while since I had been on Mazzy Peak, so I decided to do this one once again.

This time we headed up Barnhardt and came back on Y-Bar.

We stopped at Big Kahuna Falls and hung out for a while. There was decent water flow there, but not as much as a few weeks ago.

We went up the drainage on the north side to the normally dry falls. By the time we got there we were dealing with some snow and ice. Once past the falls, we headed up for a ridgeline. The climb was crazy steep and I would not do that again. Being on the north side, there was some snow in places.

There are great views at the summit. We stayed for a while but then it started to get cold and windy, so we made our descent down to the Y-Bar Trail. It is a lot easier going down than coming up in that direction.

The Y-Bar trail was miserable as ever, but at least it was not overgrown. The Barnhardt Trail is going to need some trail maintenance in places before too much longer.

A couple years ago when summitting Mazatzal Peak for the first time, I noticed on the topo map that Suicide Ridge could be a potential route to the summit. Finally got around to trying it out.

I figured correctly that once gaining the ridge, there shouldn't be any major obstacles. The question was the best way to get up there. There was a ridge that, from the parking lot, looked completely unbroken, so decided to shoot for that one. Once there, we weren't sure we were at the right one, since the next one (not visible from the TH) looked better. We took the next one. It was about a 1,700 foot climb in less than 1.2 miles to gain the ridge, but overall it wasn't too bad, with no scrambling and reasonably kind vegetation.

Suicide Ridge itself did not make for too difficult travel, with maybe three manzanita groves to wade through. It was also cold up there, and the summit actually provided a little warmth.

Decided to head down to Y-Bar on the way out, and despite having done this route before, route finding was more difficult than I remembered.

Got back to the TH right around sunset. Good day, shredded legs, and honestly enjoyed the Suicide Ridge route more than the Y-Bar approach.

Great day for this loop. The peaks were socked in to start the day, and puffy clouds shaded the mountains all day, with sunshine maybe only 20% of the time. The divide sure grows back fast. It's not bad by any stretch, but growth is impressive. Big trail traffic away from the trailhead with three pairs of backpackers and a day hiker on Barnhardt. The Mazzies north of 87 didn't get much rain from storms this week so surface water was scarce.

Gold Ridge Trail #47

Up YB > SOBO on AZT > FR201 > down GR to finish off MDT23 & AZT23. This is a very nice stretch of the AZT, except for a few dozen downed trees across the trail. Bike shuttle between Barnhardt and Deer Creek trail heads.

Approaching Peely trail head, two military jets (F-4's I believe) came screaming out of the west and dropped way down deep into Deer Creek canyon, following it east - awesome!

Started at 6:10am, so I headlamped it for 20mins or so. 42° at start. Ditched the jacket after a mile. Cruised on up Barnhardt and checked on the falls. Barely a trickle. The clouds stole the show along the divide. It added to the already excellent views. Passed a couple of backpackers also going down Y Bar, that was it for human contact. Overcast had seized the day, and spared me from the the usual sun exposure on this trail. The TH was full upon my return. I noticed dark skies had taken over and the tops of the peaks, including Mt Ord, were hidden under clouds, as I departed. Enjoyed this loop, as always. Great morning in the Mazzies.

Decided to head a little north for cooler temps this weekend. Great loop hike. The last time we were on the Y-Bar Trail was 5 years ago doing this same loop. Some small patches of snow still remain but its melting quickly. Saw no others on the trails until we were within 2 miles of the trail head.

Quick overnighter to Bear Spring before my weekend and Dallin's 9 month summer is over. We started early in the afternoon. The 2 hours of sleep in my car the night before felt fantastic on the climb up. Then I realized I forgot my sleeping pad. We got to camp at Bear Spring and immediately checked on the well. It was full. After dinner, we took a walk SoBo along the Divide before it got dark. We enjoyed a nice fire and I slept on some pine needles. Conduction wasn't that bad, despite a wet quilt from an overnight rain that was short lived. Fortunately, it was an unseasonably warm night and I slept well. In the a.m. we made an invigorating pre-dawn trip to the spring before tearing down and leaving. Cruised along the Divide and down Barnhardt. Both are in great shape. The wind along the AZT felt nice. Saw plenty of deer, but no people out until the last mile of Barnhardt. Good little getaway in the Mazzies.

Spent a beautiful Saturday hiking the Mazzy Peak Loop with Kyle and his buddy Tommy and two dogs.

We hit the trail around 8:15am and headed up the Y Bar Trail. We made steady time as the trails climbs in elevation. We took a break when the trail levels out and then continued our loop. It was a nice day but chilly when the wind blew. We kept at it and connected onto the Barnhardt Trail. There was a group of 6 backpackers and they wanted a weather update. We told them about the rain in the forecast and one of them decided he didn't want to deal with that so he hiked out Barnhardt while the rest of his group continued north along the AZT.

From there we continued another mile and then took our lunch break. The last few miles blurred by as we headed out. We talked to the guy hiking out roughly a mile out and he was getting a ride from another day hiker. The hiking community always come through for each other!

Anyways, this was a nice hike and didn't take all day. The Mazzies never disappoint. One last note it's very dry out there. There was some water in Big Kahuna & Barnhardt Canyon. That's about it.

The weather today couldn't have been more perfect-- it was so nice out. The three of us and two dogs made really great time. The folks who maintained this section of the Divide Trail did an amazing job. There was also a trail crew from the Conservation Corps working on cutting back the manzanita on the Barnhardt trail between the top of the canyon and the Divide junction-- they're doing a killer job! I've done this loop many times and this is the first time without a scratch.

Good little weekend trip into the Mazatzals for some brush clearing along the AZT section of the Divide Trail. I went up Y Bar mid morning on Friday. The trail gets rough in the middle but I really enjoy the last couple of miles. Caught up with fellow volunteer Alan just after the saddle and finished the trek over to Bear Spring together. We made it to camp and met with Carl, Jerry and Connie. We sat around camp and watched the moon come up and light the entire camp site up. Headlamps weren't necessary this night. On Saturday a.m. we worked north toward the Y Bar junction. Lee joined us in the process, followed by Dallin and Alex. With such a formidable crew, we just about turned that stretch into the nicest section of AZT for miles. After a nutrition break back at camp, we hiked south toward Peeley for some additional trimming but mostly to enjoy some views. Woke up to thick layer of smoke on Sunday. We made an early a.m. departure via Barnhardt and couldn't see the Rim or even Rye down below us. Definitely had a good time with a great crew! The Bear Spring turnout is a great little spot to camp.

Seemed like a good day to get some action in the Mazzies, so I got up early and went for it.

Barnhardt: I could tell immediately there would be some flow at the falls. Water in the bottom of the canyon was raging and the trail itself still had run off flowing. There wasn't a patch of dry trail all day. Lots of mushrooms present. Stopped at both falls and climbed up to take a photo. All drainages had water present. There are a few somewhat overgrown spots, not too bad.

Mazatzal Divide: About 85% of the trail is in good shape. Just a few drainages that were overgrown. One in particular requires that you crawl through tall grass and sage to get under the locust. Fun for me, but I could see how someone wearing a bigger pack might find it annoying. Love the views! Even those drainages full of dead oak had water flowing. Made good time along the Divide before reaching Y-Bar.

Y-Bar: There was water running below Windsor Spring, couldn't find the source though. This was the slowest going part of the hike. New deadfall, some overgrowth and all the rocks keep one at a modest pace despite going downhill. Encountered a black rattler catching some rays just beyond Y-Bar Spring. There is one patch of trail that has officially been reclaimed by locust. Just going off memory I was able to navigate this mess fairly easily. It was getting warm quickly when I reached the TH. Didn't see anyone else on the trails all day.

Awesome weather, scenic views and waterfalls. Most fun I've had on a hike in a long time!

After an ...interesting... introduction to the Mazzies a month ago it seemed right to give the eastern side a try. After all, the eastern side sees more traffic and thusly would have better trails. Armed with lighter gear, new boots, and wide-eyed optimism I concocted a hair-brained plan to hike up the Divide, descend down Davenport, swing over to Deadman, and then do something Willow Springs or Wet Bottom. LOL.

Y-Bar Trail
This is a fantastic trail. It climbs steadily and easily and goes through a wide variety of flora. This was my first time on any eastern trail and my biggest issue was keeping my jaw from dropping with all the fantastic scenery. Trail was in good shape, only a few deadfall to step over, and I made it up to Windsor Spring in good spirits and good time. Even watered up at an unnamed spring above Y-Bar Tanks and successfully used the Sawyer Mini.

Mazatzal Divide (from Windsor to Horse Camp Seep)
A brief break at Windsor and I set down the divide trail in a half-trot. Passed a group of backpackers heading southbound and shared the water situation w/ them. They told me Barnhardt was overgrown (this was 2016, after all) and they had the cuts to prove it. After them I cruised past the Barnhardt junction, thankfully oblivious to the Brody Seep 'shortcut', and watered up at some tanks before Chilson.

It was about noon by now so I made a half-attempt at finding then eastern end of Davenport. Half because my heels were starting to hurt from the new boots and because the brush was thick. After wandering right into a giant anthill I called it and went back to pout at the picnic table. Then I went up to check on Chilson Spring and came away disappointed. Morning momentum was gone and afternoon frumps were setting in. I didn't want to bail so early so I meandered aimlessly down the Mazatzal Divide without a clear plan. Some portions were clear, some portions stabbed at my shins. A few of the Deadman tributaries had stale pools of water with bees circling around them. When I reached Horse Camp Seep I was drained. Plopped down next to the tanks and enjoyed a long lunch and lots of water. While I was resting an AZT thru-hiker came in and we had a good long chat about life.

Still optimistic, even with my heels starting to bleed, I decided to push on to Hopi Spring and maybe The Park. I could try to turn this into a Rock Creek Loop or maybe reverse direction from my original plan. Once I made it to Hopi, though, I was done. Checked out the water source, lamented the condition of Rock Creek Trail on the eastern slope, and balked at the climb left to The Park. Retreated to Horse Camp Seep to see two AZT thru-hikers instead of just one (is that how that works?) and then set up camp for the night.

Camp
This time I was armed with a lighter sleeping bag (Sea to Summit 50°F) and a mosquito net, plus an Eslit solid fuel stove. Saved some serious weight. Stove worked okay and the temps dropped well below 50. Ended up using a tarp as a blanket, which got me through the night just fine. Overall a better night than out by Club Cabin. Woke up with a sour gut and limped out with the sun rise.

Retreat down Barnhardt
Was tempted to check out Sandy Saddle and then wasn't when I saw the 'junction'. (Yes, I was bad at researching trail conditions in 2016. I'm slightly better now.) Trundled back past Chilson and had breakfast at the lovely giant tree W of Barnhardt Junction. Even saw some deer while I was sipping coffee, first ones I've seen in AZ. Then it was down Barnhardt. It was somewhat overgrown, not as bad as I expected, and the scenery was lovely. My heels were not. By the time I reached the trailhead my socks were half red.

And that was the last +5 mile hike I used Keen Targhees on.

Met up with John & Joe for some trail work. They came in from Peeley TH, while I started from Barnhardt TH and took Y-Bar up to the Divide and over to camp at Bear Spring. Tons of Wildflowers along the way, as well as scattered showers and some really neat looking cloud cover. I especially enjoyed the last 2 miles of Y-Bar before the Divide. The entire trail is in great shape (except for the rocks) and easy to follow. Saturday we started at 8am and cleared about 12 large trees between Bear Spring and Y-Bar junction. Had lunch here with a thru-hiker working on completing the AZT for a 3rd time. Then we cleared brush as we worked from Y-Bar toward Brody Seep and finished around 5pm. Later that evening we were joined by a couple from Phoenix who would join in the brush clearing on Sunday and Monday. I put in 4 more hours of trail work Sunday morning before heading back to camp, packing up and hiking back down. I had a good time with good company and awesome weather.

Great day for this hike given this weekends cool-down, it even felt good in direct sunshine. This was my first time on this summit and only 2nd time on the adjoining trails, looks a lot different than I remembered. I started up Shake Tree and summited from that side of the peak. Taking a terrible route, I found myself having to down-climb and backtrack a couple of times but not too bad. Started seeing cairns about half way up. Had the summit all to myself and definitely enjoyed the views and breeze while having lunch. I wanted to stay up there all day, but had to get moving. For my descent I took the nearest drainage wash down before connecting with Barnhardt. Just a few small pools left behind. No catclaw to speak of, only locust and manzanita, but none of it was too seriously obstructive. The worst of the locust was my fault for even getting into (and for wearing shorts). Only saw one deer and a bunch of cattle grazing at the TH. Didn't see any hikers until crossing paths with a pair of lady backpackers who were heading up Barnhardt on my way down. Shortly after passing them a military jet of some kind flew right over me and down into Tonto Basin before disappearing. The sound of its engines in the canyon was extemely loud but thrilling. Finished off 170oz of water and a Gatorade once back at the TH. Donated a little blood and a lot of sweat but it was all worth it.

Some people who care about stats too much needed to get some kind of a peak or county high point or something. I'm not sure.

We jumped the gun on the Mazzies by a few weeks this season I think. It was warm at 7:30 and it was downright hot in the afternoon. I forgot how much I hate Y-Bar. Call it Shake Tree if you want, it doesn't make it any better.

The summit is great though and the views are as good as anywhere in the state. Humphreys, Kendrick, Sitgreaves, BW, Mingus, Pine, Mcdowells, Piestewa, White Tanks, Estrella, Newman, Supes, Pinals, Turnbull, Graham, Lake Roosevelt, Ancha, Baldy, Escudilla, and the entire Mogollon Rim. Babo is visible on a clear day, which today wasn't. I think only the Kofas are not normally visible from here!

It seems more overgrown than last time. The summit climb is only a mile, but the 1600 feet took us well over an hour.

Blanco is a superstar! Nothing else to say on that.

Saw a group of four heading out on an overnight. HAZ sticker in the window. I'd be interested to hear how their trip went. :welcome:

Great hike though we probably hit this a little early in the season-- it was a tad bit toasty. I'm glad I left the dog at home.

Chumley and I both remembered the bushwacking being less sharp which ended up with the four of us in shorts and cut to shreds-- pretty typical day in the Mazzies

I was able to finally cross Mazatzal Peak off my to do list today. I was surprisingly able to get all of the usual suspects to join me on this warm mid-September endeavor.

It was a tad warm at times and there were a couple of brushy spots but the ascent still went relatively well. We enjoyed the cooler temps, and the sporadic cloud covered with a nice breeze once we reached the summit. After that, it was simply retracing our route and then making our way down Y-Bar to the trailhead.

In the end, it is a very nice peak, with rewarding summit that is certainly worth the effort. I was very happy to knock this one off the list with others who had been and not solo. Perhaps, it could have been done on a cooler day, but I still enjoyed the hike. Everyone exhausted their water before arriving back to the TH and this included me who started the day with nearly 170 oz of water for myself and Mr. Blanco who deserves a hand for performing admirably under some pretty tough conditions and along a relatively challenging route.

Started from Sunflower kinda late at 9:30a. Went north on Saddle Mountain Trail and then Maz Divide Trail until Windsor Saddle (I've already done Y Bar to Red Hills previously). Took Y Bar down to Barnhardt TH and got picked up along FR419.
I didn't much care for AZT #22 but #23 from Peeley to Windsor is pretty sweet. I definitely want to do that one again! Going down Y Bar in the dark pretty much sucked. Saw a few nice campsites along the Divide Trail and all were stocked with firewood! I was worried I'd run into some overgrown sections on the Divide Trail but everything is in good shape right now. I think a trail crew has been out there recently (they were camped out near Barnhardt TH).
