It's been a while since I have visited this cool formation and I needed a short hike to hit before the blast furnance started up.

I drove down the the rough road and started up over the first hump. The trail to this one is getting more and more defined. It's almost an actual trail now!

The temps were in the 80's when I started out about 515am and in the 90's when I finished up a little past 8am. I took a couple of detours on this one, checking for interesting things.

I saw a never ending stream of cars, trucks, truck pulling boats and motorcyles driving on Hwy 88, but as expected, I had this place all to myself.

I considered climbing up inbetween the horns, but my bum-hip reminded me that was not going to happen. I settled for exploring a little above and then started back to the truck.

Very crispy out there. It's clear our desert is needing some rains. I hope we get some soon.

I was scouting for possible astrophotography spots and I believe I identified a couple. Maybe a little night hiking is in my future in this area.

A nice and quick day in the Goldfields.

1st time hiking to the Horns, crossed paths with one group of 5 hikers coming down as we were heading up but nobody else after that. Beautiful morning to hike and finished off with a quick stop at Canyon Lake for my dog to splash around.

I had been wanting to hike up to Peak 2881, and since I had never been to Horns of a Dilemma I figured that I would go there also. Rather than doing an out-and-back we made a loop out of it by coming back on Willow Creek.

We did the loop clockwise.

We followed a pretty decent use trail up to Peak 2881. The scenery was nice and this portion of the hike was enjoyable, and I would do this segment again.

We then made our way to the Horns, by first following a ridgeline, then picking up a good trail for a ways, and then more-or-less bushwhacking to the Horns. Views were nice on this section also so I enjoyed this portion.

From the Horns we followed a decent use trail over to Willow Creek, which we took back to the trailhead. I did not like hiking in Willow Creek at all --- walking 3+ miles in a dry creek bed isn't my thing and I thought this section was boring. We had to get out of the creek 2-3 times to bypass some dryfalls.

We eventually slogged our way back to the TH.

I enjoyed the first half of this hike; the second half not so much.

Ryan and Klaudia proposed this one and it fit the bill for an easy-ish Saturday. A few times there was a breeze that got borderline chilly, but mostly it was a little warm, fitting the theme for the last, oh, 5 years. Needless to say, not a drop of water was found. Thankfully, a similar amount of people were encountered. Did see a squadron of javvies.

We messed up on the exit by following the most established route, which dropped us out on the 88 earlier than desired.

Besides the insane number of cairns, there's been some unauthorized official trail work along the way. Not sure if it's mountain bikers or equestrians, but they've had actual tools out there clearing the path. It is what it is. Apparently not everybody appreciates undeveloped route-finding and exploration.

With a full day of steady rain lingering into the next morning and plenty of time before a mid-afternoon flight, I figured the Goldfields would be a good spot to knock out a few miles to take advantage of the conditions without having to spend too much time driving to and fro.

Somebody has decided that the undeveloped route to 2881 should be marked with cairns often reaching 3 feet in height, and built so closely to each other that the lovechild of Stevie Wonder and Helen Keller could find this summit while drunk. Needless to say, I enjoyed returning some of the pristine views here to a more natural state, politely leaving two or three rocks stacked in some key locations for those who might otherwise be unable to solve the puzzle of ascending to the visible summit above.

North of 2881, the path was more enjoyable, with much more discovery and adventure. Rain showers lingered off and on, and the storm low clouds moved in and out, sometimes obscuring our view to less than 100 feet, and other times opening up great scenes across the landscape. It was pretty perfect!

We swung by the Horns of Dilling before dropping down and making our way off-trail up the drainage back toward the car. I was hoping for a little bit more flow here, but despite the rain, a long dry spell resulted in mostly just a trickle with a few pools.

After the drive home I had time for a quick shower and arrived at PHX as the last group was boarding. Couldn't think of a better way to do it!

We headed to the northeast Goldfields to check out some new areas, and I cobbled together a few different points of interest from various routes and triplogs, mostly centered around the 2881 Consensus Loop, knowing we wouldn't have time to see them all today. We parked at the small pullout along SR 88 where the Consensus Loop starts and followed the route clockwise toward 2881 on a windy morning. The route leading toward the peak was extremely well-cairned...I recognized @Yoder's handiwork from hiking Sunset Arch a few months ago, and some of the cairns along the route today were as much artwork as they were trail markers :).

We circled around to the east side and then up to the peak, and the wind was almost unbearable on top, with gusts that must have been up to 40-50 mph. The views were great, but we didn't spend much time up there before heading down the more gradual slope on the north side.

[ youtube video ]

The traverse to Horns was a very scenic area, with a small arch along the route and a good size cave up in the formations behind us. I'd added the Little Keyhole Saddle route among the other points of interest, and after hiking down from Horns, @TBoneKathy waited while I took a quick detour to see if I could find the keyhole. I didn't have a specific location and didn't know what it looked like, but when I reached the spot where I thought it might be located, I did see a tiny, keyhole-shaped arch on top of a rock formation. The description said it was small, but this was only a few inches tall...someone who's been there will have to confirm if what I saw was actually Little Keyhole. If so, that's the smallest named rock formation I've encountered...if not, I guess I found Really Little Keyhole.

We detoured off the main loop again and explored north toward Peaks 2178 and 2135 and saw a few arches, but I didn't have time to go up to the peaks. Next up was Canyon Lake Massif 2276. Hiking along SR 88 with all the road noise wasn't exactly a highlight today, but the views from the massif made it a worthwhile stop, and the wind had calmed down some by afternoon.

[ youtube video ]

We hiked back to the loop and headed south following Willow Creek. It was a lot more rugged than a lot of the other Goldfield creek beds, and we had to bypass multiple deep pools on the hike out. The official route has two of the pools marked, but we there were 4-5 that we ended up navigating around--all of them surprisingly deep given the dry conditions, though it looked like at least one was fed from a spring upstream. The final large pool had a lot of debris nearby...old irrigation tubing, buckets, rusty pipe, and other random stuff. That final section of the loop ended up being a lot and interesting than anticipated...there's a lot more going on down along the spring than you'd ever see just driving by on 88.

As expected, we didn't get to everything I'd mapped out, but it was a good day with a lot of variety in the terrain and scenery. In typical Goldfield fashion, we saw ~3x the number of arches as we saw other hikers today :). And I found a Leatherman multi-tool in the dirt on the way to Horns of Dilemma, which was a nice bonus.

Quiet morning in and out hike. Tall grasses made route finding easy but sometimes hidden depending on terrain. I would guess there's been little use since last Spring. Overcast skies made for terrific glow on the Horns each time sunrays pierced the clouds. It seemed to me that this trek was a bit easier than the last time, but still one of the slower 1+ mile hikes.

What a wonderful hike to the Horns of Dilemma. Not long, but sufficient up/down. The views are outstanding. The route is not a bushwack any longer. The trail has been travelled well enough we would have found it without a track to follow - in most places. We parked at the Mailbox TH (I think that's what it is called.) near Canyon Lake.

john had the day off so we decided not to hike south mountain this morning
i've said before that one of the best things about haz is the ideas you get from other people
we copied work from @adilling and @hikerdw, hiking a loop that included two landmarks which have been on my radar, peak 2881 and the horns of dilemma
started before sunrise, but only needed my headlamp for about ten minutes
had good light on the high points before sunrise
use trails to 2881, although we cut for the peak early
the ridgeline down to the horns was very nice
got up to the saddle between the horns
great views from all of the above
dropped down to willow creek
slow going at times in the gravel, but also cool high walls, bedrock and boulder hopping, classic goldfields scenery and some fun pour offs to negotiate
think we were 50-50 on pour off vs. bypass
all new territory for both of us - good to be back out in goldfields again
decent off trail - recommend the hike
thanks for driving, lp
good times!

Kelly suggested a hike in the Goldfields, and I was in. Such a unique area.
Started early so we were treated to a pretty sunrise. Great views from Peak 2881. The Horns were fun to scale. Looks like one of them wouldn't be too hard to top if you had a mind to. The hike back through the wash was much better than expected. Pour offs offered some scrambling and a challenge.
Fun day. Goldfield scenery is always very cool. Thanks Kelly. :)

My plan this weekend was to hit Byous Butte and Hewitt Ridge, but there was a brush fire off Hewitt Station Road, so I wasn’t sure how that would affect the air up there. So, plan B was do a loop that I have long wanted to accomplish – Peak 2881, Horns of Dilemma and Willow Creek Wash. I have been checking out a triplog from @hikerdw that did this in the reverse – Willow Creek to the Horns and then up to 2881. I decided the other way would suit me better, plus I would get a sunrise from there if I arrived early enough.

I have hiked all three of these multiple times, but have never put them together as a loop.

The sunrise was worth getting up early for sure. Very vibrant. The clouds took over right after sunrise and made for a gloomy start. But they eventually burnt off and it was clear skies once I started down 2881 to the Horns.

The path up to 2881 is a nice hike. I have been up to the little ridgeline below the peak often, so getting there is no problem. I skipped the direct assault on the peak and opted to skirt the edge and work my way across and then up. Once I had my visit up at the summit, I started towards the ridgeline that would connect me to the Horns.

This area was new to me and I really enjoyed the views. There’s a kinda/sorta path to follow, but the route seems very clear either way. Once I made it up to the last saddle before the Horns, I felt some relief as most of the climbing for the day was over (or so I thought…ha ha).

I skipped climbing up to the Horns and instead hiked across the backside base and headed for Willow Creek. The last time I was in Willow Creek, I took it all the way to the Lake. There was some water in there that time. It was dry as a bone this time except for the large well at the first lower falls. My memory of that hike selectively erased all the bypasses I had to do. I went down the last time. This time I was going up.

A great loop. I saw no other human beings the entire hike. I did see some javelina down in the wash area. I really love this part of the Goldfields. So scenic and wild.

Ginny and I spent three days in Apache Junction to do a little hiking. The first day we arrived around noon and planned a short hike to the Horns of Dilemma. I saw this hike posted from the New Year Day hike and thought it might be interesting. I have been watching the reruns of the old Doctor Who series from the 60's and this sounded like one of their episodes. I almost expected to see a couple of Daleks up there. The weather was to be in the mid 70's so it was perfect weather. There was a slight breeze which was nice because 70 degree weather can still be a bit warm in the sun. This would be Ginny's first hike in the Goldfields and the first time with full sun, the first hike she did was last January to Fremont saddle and it was damp and foggy. Couldn't even see Weavers Needle from the saddle.

I was expecting that this would be a hike without a trail just rock cairns to guide the way but I guess it is traveled enough that there is actually a trail. Actually there are two, one follows to the south side of the creek and the other more in the creek. Both have the same start and end sections. We did one in and the other back. Got to the horns but didn't climb up to the saddle between the horns. From the north side it actually isn't to hard to climb the rock up to the saddle but I'm not the rock scrambler I use to be. On the return trip I noticed that there is probably a route up from the Southeast side. I was content not going up, I figured the view won't be significantly better from 10 feet higher up. I turned into such a weenie as I've gotten older, or maybe I've gotten smarter.

The desert was really dry so as expected no water to report. I think I even saw a couple cactus trying to steel my canteen. There was a bald eagle sightings on this trip to the supes. I wasn't sure if that is what they were but Ginny said they were so when I got back home I looked up information about them being in the superstitions and sure enough they are. Looks a lot like a buzzard, of which that's all they are (glorified buzzard) but much larger with different coloring. On some of the other hikes I got photos of them though not spectacular photos.

This hike was a nice addition to our 10th Annual New Years Day Peak Bag (Canyon Lake Massif) hike in the morning. Primed with @outdoor_lover's oatmeal cookies, chocolate covered strawberries and champagne we set off at a lively pace but soon ran into some route finding difficulties. Probably caused by the champagne. This hike does not have an official trail but there were several use trails leading in the general direction and more than a few confusing animal trails. @outdoor_lover decided to abandon the Dilemma and waited on the first ridgetop for us to return. We encountered two other hikers heading back to the trailhead when we were on the final approach. They told us of a more direct route to take on our way back which led to a speedy return after reaching our goal.

This hike does not disappoint with it's amazing geology and views. The route finding confusion was only temporary and in the end it seemed that most trails will get you there.

Followed along with this fine group for another hike after completing the Canyon Lake Massif, routes had been downloaded for an easy 3 mile hike. Unfortunately we didn’t follow those routes on the approach, if the route we took is ever posted, I propose naming it the champagne route. We persisted generally in the correct direction while trying various “trails” through the washes or up the hills . Finally arriving I wasn’t able to climb up the Horns, too much champagne , not enough footholds , legs too short and other excuses . Still enjoyed nice views from the base of the horns and circumventing at least the backside . Return trip was much quicker that route I’ll refer to as the sober route. Enjoyable trip with a great group, glad I joined along, thanks Angela for coming up with this idea.

I thot it would be nice to extend our hiking day after the New Year's gathering at the Canyon Lake Massif and this supposedly short hike would fit the bill. And it did for the most part except that one of the routes I downloaded had us bushwhacking up a slippery hill when there was no need. Our track on the way back was the best way to do this hike. On the way there the Horns always seemed far away even as we got closer.

We meandered up the hill via the road and then off road we went up and over... well kind of. We actually backtracked a bit and went to the right to stay closer to the track we had downloaded. This would happen again trying to stay true to the track. Pam stopped at the top of the hill and the rest of us continued on making our way to the creek area. Tom saw a path across the creek so we took that instead of hiking in the dry creek. There is a short time you end up back in the creek but then can grab the path again to the left.

We should have stayed on this track but instead saw what looked like a nice trail on the other side so we took that for awhile. We ended crossing back over the creek again to get back on the original path. However, Terry looks at the track, and Larry agrees, that we need to be on the other side of this hill to our right so up we all trod  . We eventually came to the area on top that is pretty much right in front of the Horns. Here we encounter a couple hikers and Larry and I asked them about the route they had taken. We would take that back the whole way.

Meanwhile you drop into a drainage area for a little bit before spotting the cairn for the route up. The route is fairly visible and there are cairns here and there. It's not too bad getting up to the saddle where Tom was waiting. The other two were already up on the Horns. Larry and I headed on up. We saw the other two coming down but couldn't quite figure out their route so once we were partially up we came down. By this time Tom had gone up the path and tried to climb up to the saddle but couldn't quite manage that last leg up so to speak. We continued along the north side of the Horns and then up from the west side to where the other two had gone.

And after checking out the views, we headed back down and took the route the other two hikers had pointed out and discussed. We made very good time though this path does fade a bit here and there and has some off-shoots but if you stay nearer the creek, you're good to go. Before you knew it, we were up the last hill and over to the jeep road. Pam was there to make sure we made it safely.

Even though the Massif Horns hike was under 5 miles; I burned a lot of calories. Good thing we got cookies for fuel. I did not stop the WATCH record so both hikes show: 4.79 miles in 5:24 (includes party time) avg bpm 119, max bpm 178 (1 hr at max 5, 1:20 at anaerobic , 1:22 at aerobic, 1:14 weight control and 14 min at low intensity) Burned 1705 calories. Start temp 45.7 with haze and 28% humidity.

Another fantastic New Year's Day hike with the HAZ crew. Great views from the Massif with great company and banter. Thank you so much Pam for continuing this tradition!
Bonus hike afterwards to the Horns of Dilemma courtesy of tibber!

A quick Sunday morning hike. I chose this one to avoid the crowds in the Superstitions.

I always like to take people out to this little hike. The path is getting so clear. It's an actual trail now. We saw no other people except for a couple that had driven up to the end of the road to get a view. Other than that, we had the place to ourselves.

We went up along the east/north side, but had some younger ones with us and opted to not climb up between the horns. We did take the back way around and did a little bushwhacking back to the trail.

Nice views as always - Canyon Lake, Weavers Needle, Four Peaks and Saguaro Lake, all from one place!

A nice hike on a beautiful day.

When we first started out along the road and we ran into a big pile of crap someone had dumped. There's not much else that pisses me off more than seeing this. Someone did not want to spend $10 for the dump and decided to take it out to the desert. PATHETIC. I hope that does not encourage more losers to do the same. UGH!
