Started from Area 10 and hiked Blevins to Cat Peaks, Cat Peaks Pass, off trail to the two shorter peaks, Nighthawk Wash, Channel Trail, and Crismon Wash back to Area 10. Legs were still stiff from the hike the day before, but not too bad. I hiked slower in general but even more so along the peaks. It's officially off trail, but there are trails up there to the peaks. nice to check those out. Typical foot traffic was out, not too bad. a few bikers but not many.

Between the heat and having to get some chores done, I opted to hike as Usery. I hadn't hiked the Crismon Wash Trail in several years, so I made sure to start off with that. I hiked a convoluted loop out to the end of the Ruidoso Trail and then back along the Channel Trail and other lower elevation trails in that area. Saw an odd looking lizard that was a bit larger than most others you normally see. Finished up in 4 hours and got on with the rest of the day's chores.

Morning hike. Second of a "daily double." No garmin so mileage is an approximation. Wanted to get a loop involving the Crimson Wash. Started from the CW TH and took the Levee trail east. Took the Levee maybe .5 miles until it dropped down to the Channel Trail. At this juncture there was a nice single track heading north. Following this user trail brought me the south portion of the Blevins trail. Took the Blevins west until intersected with the Crimson. This intersection occurred in the "middle" of the Crimson. So first I took the Crimson north to where it intersected with the northern portion of the Blevins. It is odd. At this juncture there is no indication (no signage) stating that this is where the Crimson trail begins/ends. The wash had become overgrown and splintered so I wasn't sure if I had taken a wrong turn. I went about .25 miles east and west from where I connected to the Blevins. I did not see any other signage, or for that matter washes, that lead me to believe that I had taken a wrong turn. I returned to what I believe is the beginning of the Crimson Wash and took it south. It wasn't until I passed the southern part of the Blevins that I saw my first sign for the Crimson. Continuing south, the trail markers became more frequent and lead me back to the Crimson TH.

Pretty sure I did the Crimson from north to the south. Odd. Neither the north nor south ends of the trail have signage indicating Crimson Wash Trail. Even odder. This was the Crimson Wash TH...you would think they would have signage indicating the TH's namesake. No wildlife. Saw a handful of people on the "hard" trails, but no one while in the wash. .....Washes are usually a good bet for social distancing. Weather was great! Cool and overcast.

On Friday we hiked the 3108 Ridgeline so to be fair, yesterday we hiked the neighboring Pass Mountain Ridgeline. Started from the Crismon gate which added a couple miles and allowed us to check out some new to us park trails. On this hike we dropped off the ridgeline to the west following the clearly marked trail which was a first for me. Although a little loose, I prefer this exit route.

Merry Christmas all!!

Drove my Ford to the levee and it was not dry. Blevins- Crismon-Levee-Nighthawk-Blevins. Still water in the channel below Levee. Lots of Dragonflies and Quail out.

I went over to Usery to do some morning exploring on some different trails. Route Scout said 1050 AEG. Sounds high. I'll take 100. :D :y:

Out on Crimson Wash, took Levee over to Signal Wash, Spillway up to Blevins, then West on Blevins to Nighthawk Wash. Went West on Channel trail to end, then returned East to Noso. Returned to car, with a loop around Merkle on the way back.

This was a bittersweet trip to Usery Mountain Regional Park that is likely to be my last for a long time...

The sweet part was finally getting to complete all the trails in the park. I intentionally sought out the Nature Loop on the south side of Buckhorn Campground. I also went searching for the Coleman Trail, an unmarked and by all accounts unofficial trail that connects the group area with the Wind Cave area. Then I went up the Vista Trail, which I may have been on in the past as it seemed familiar, before returning to my car via the Crismon Wash Trail.

Then came the bittersweet. When I got to my car there was a warning on my windshield from the park. I figured it must be a misunderstanding, possibly my own fault for not filling out the envelope before paying the entrance fee. Sometimes I do that if I don't have a writing utensil and just risk that the park ranger will match up the serial number on the envelope with the one on the tear stub.

I drove up to the visitor's center to get it sorted out. The park ranger said it had nothing to do with not filling out the envelope. He issued the warning because I parked at one of the trailheads outside the park and walked into the park, therefore only paying the $2 entrance- by-foot fee. Apparently, the outer trailheads (there are seven not including Meridian TH or anything north of the park entrance on Usery Pass Rd.) are for "community access" only. I explained to him that I'm a Mesa resident and therefore a member of the community; one who comes to the park on a regular basis and never fails to pay the entrance fee. He said by "community access", he meant those who walk from the nearby neighborhood. He also said that Maricopa County can ticket anyone parked at one of the outer entrances. The "warning" he gave me was to "encourage" me to drive into the park the next time and pay the full $6 entrance fee so I don't get ticketed by Maricopa County. That seemed like a racket to me and I told him so. The park and the county have basically teamed up to intimidate people in paying the full fee. If that's the case why not just close the outer trailheads? Plus, if I was parked outside the park what jurisdiction does he have to even issue me a warning? The way he described it made little sense. As a result, I told him that I will miss coming to the park.

On the way out I drove past the outer trailheads. Some have "No Parking" signs, some don't. None of them have any signage saying "Community Access Only". A couple of the trailheads had cars parked at them. Either way, if those are the rules of Usery Mountain Regional Park, I can either abide by them or go somewhere. Since I completed all the trails, I will likely go somewhere else.

While cleaning out for a garage sale my dad discovered hiking boots he bought a couple of years ago. He was unlikely to ever use them, so he gave them to me. Since my normal boots were caked in mud from hiking in the Supes yesterday, I took the new boots out for a short walk. I know I've hiked Crismon Wash before. I'm not sure why I never logged the trip. I think the hike description wasn't around at the time. Anyway, the boots will make a suitable backup pair after I break them in and change the insoles. The hike was more of a walk, but it was a nice day for it.

I had to run some errands today and since I was in the neighborhood I decided to hit Usery Park. It has been close to year since I visited some of these trails and it was nice rodo them. Parked off of Crimson Rd. a litle before 7. I didn't have a game plan when I started, but I knew the trails connected frequently, which allows for a lot of spur of the monent decisions.

I took the Levee trail west which allowed for a great view of the Superstition as the sun was rising. The trail was "blah" but the panoramic view was fantastic. Took the Channel trail back toward the car. This in effect, made a long but very narrow oval circle. Both trails parallel each other, are straight, and are probably within 20-30ft. of wach other the whole time. As I was heading back down this trail I heard more coyotes than I can recall hearing before. Sounded like 10 or so all saying good night/good morning :) . COOL.

When I got back to the west end of the Channel trail it ran back into Levee trail. I took this portion of the Levee over to Moon Rock trail. This portion of the Levee and the Moon Rock trail are very nice! The trail doesn't gain in elevation so it is easy to do and twists and turns a lot so I was always seeing something different. The vegetation in this area is very healthy. I was actually looking up at cholla(?), or something like it. These cacti had a 2-3ft. barklike trunk before they turned into a cholla cacti. I'm not sure if this could be because of age or just a certain type of cholla.

From the Moon Rock trail I did the Blevins trail. The Blevins trail actually makes a loop. I enjoyed the northern portion because I got a nice view of Usery Mnt. and it was somewhat engaging. The southern is a straight shot, so the trail itself wasn't that interesting. The surrounding foliage was still very nice. I had to do some backtracking and repetition to get Crimsom Wash trail. This trail pretty much goes north-south and was very sandy (a wash). It got me back to right where I started my hike.

Didn't see many on the trails. Did see a couple of Peters and Wilies and a Jack.
