Up Cyclone to view the weather.
Mountain looks like it was going to get hit with storms.
I chose instead to head east for some rockhounding out in the Black Hills.
Good choice, found many Saffordites and several tarantulas!
:D

2 short-n-sweet ones on this snowy, rainy, cloudy afternoon.
First hiked up Cyclone Hill where I was greeted on top with a full rainbow to the east.
On the way back down I was serenaded by a pack of song dogs.
Was in the area so I hiked down to John's Dam to check the water flow ... good medium flow.
Very stormy scenic day out, only got hit by a few sprinkles.
Mt Graham is socked in and refused to reveal it's new snow on top, should see it tomorrow!
:D

Nice hike down #57 for a visit up to the old "dynamite shacks".
On the way out I also added Cyclone Hill for the great views.
Wind & cold today.

Sunday afternooner up Jacobson mainly to look for canyon tree frogs (none found).
I usually avoid this area on weekends as it can be a popular water hangout this time of the year.
First got down to John's Dam and met a guy with 5 kids, then headed up Jacobson soon meeting 4 more people.
Arrived at "my" swimming hole and took the first dip of the year! A bit cold, but felt great ..... I just wish I would have took my Field Notes out of my back pocket like everything else before jumping in ](*,)
On the way back out I met 6 more people heading in and thought this is now like Grand Central Station for Jacobson.
Even with all the people (everyone was cool) I had a good time and decided to end with a hike up to Cyclone Hill before returning home.

John's Dam - I have no idea what is going on, but there are 3 new picnic tables set up at the slick rock area and another "structure" being built across the creek. There is a tarp set up with a lot of tools, rope, etc ....
Just down the creek I also found a very crude homeless person looking campsite and trash everywhere.
Not sure who would built all this, but myself and everyone I talked to DO NOT LIKE THIS!!!

Another early rise, early start.
Parked at the Boulder Lane pull-off.
Headed up the Swift Trail straightaway in the dark.
Took the ST up to the curve then down to John's Dam.
Not a single drop of water is flowing over the dam right now :o
On the return I took FR #57 back down and pass Cyclone Hill.
Swift Trail down back to the start.
Javelina, bunnies, hawk & baby birds were photographed along the way.
Super nice morning temps for this one that was over by 8am.

Started at Dankworth where I changed into my hiking clothes and hiked the inner Dos Arroyos loop.
Then drove up the Swift Trail straightaway parking at the Jacobson pull-off.
Hiked down to John's Dam, good creek flow over the dam.
I then followed the ditch "trail" down to Goat Tank, good flow into the full tank and out the other end.
Backtracked across the Swift Trail and along the old FS road and hit up Cyclone Hill, signed the register (7th trip), took in the mountain/Gila valley views then climbed down and took the Swift Trail back to the start.

After this wet rocky one, my beloved Keens will be retired :(
On to the next pair!

Plan A (and the only plan) was to hike the John's Dam area. Arrived at the pulloff to find 3 cars parked and I could hear lots of very rambunctious people down in the canyon, well :pk: that!
Had to come up with a plan B on the fly. Pulled out the topo maps and decided on the Cyclone Hill area just down the road. Before climbing the hill, I first hiked a couple miles down Forest Road 57 to revisit one of the really cool old CCC structures just off the road and to explore the area for artifacts. I then made my way back, climbed Cyclone, signed the Geo register & took in the sunset before climbing back down. Plan B = very enjoyable evening!

Haven't been up Cyclone Hill in over a year so with a few free late afternoon hours, I hit it up. Parked along the Swifty and first hiked down to John's Dam to check the water flow. Jacobson Creek was barely flowing over the dam, but low flow was expected for this time of the year. I then crossed the road and down to Cyclone Hill. Climbed up to the top, signed the register and took in the outstanding 360 views & sunset. A quick descent back down and short walk up the Swift Trail brought me back to my truck completing a very nice little loop.
Almost ran over a diamondback crossing the straightaway on the drive back, guess there gonna be out a little longer.

Decided for this afternoons adventure to just combine a little bit of a few of the lower Graham mountain trails. Started at Johns Dam and made a real nice loop by heading up Jacobson Canyon for a mile, then off-trail up to the Swift Trail and took it back down & up Cyclone Hill and back to Johns Dam to complete the loop. Then a short drive up the road to Angle Orchard and a short walk down the Ladybug Trail to check the creek flow there before jumping on the out-n-back Adams Flat Trail. Stopped to swim in 3 different pools along the way and just had a real nice time on all of the trails! Wildlife spotted this afternoon was a Ring-necked snake, a water turtle (didn't know Jacobson creek had these) and one of Angle Orchards bird dogs that ran along & in front of my truck guiding me down to the orchard! :D

After studying Google Earth, I found some previously unnoticed old ranching trails to add to a hike I have been doing for the last year I've entitled Ledford Tank Loop. Parked a little ways up from the Swift Trail prison and had no problem locating and following these old overgrown dirt paths down to Ledford Tank and then on along my usual route ending at the upper Swift Trail straightaway. I then crossed the Hwy and took forest road 57 down to Cyclone Hill for a quick summit and then walked the Swift Trail back down to my truck completing a real nice loop. Established trails are nice, but for me there is nothing more rewarding than creating my own trails and having them work out (I've had many that have not) !!!

I got some new ND filters for my Nikon yesterday so this afternoon I headed up Graham to try them out on some waterfalls. First drove up the Swift Trail to Angle Orchard and hiked down to Jacobson Creek. Then back up and onto the Adams Flat trail for the out & back. Then a short drive up to Wet Canyon for a quick out & back to the waterfall by the climbing wall. Back down the mountain to the straightaway and a spur of the moment decision to climb up to the top of Cyclone Hill for the views. Then a stop at Roper Lake on the way home for a lap around the lake and up Mariah Mesa before returning home. The creeks were flowing strong today, I got some good pics with my new filters and had a great time!!!
