A combination of the "white and wood canyon wander" and "white canyon center loop" routes. I was a little hesitant of fire damage on this route, but the cow damage was much more annoying. Are they supposed to be in the wilderness? All the fences were trampled. Otherwise White canyon is so beautiful and very fun. I roughly followed the route on Joe's track to bypass a couple pouroffs and then quickly found an obvious trail down into the canyon. It was not marked from below. Short side trip through pretty narrows up to the pouroff and a waterfall in a side canyon, then downcanyon and west up another side canyon halfway to peak 3660 for golden hour. Camped on a flattish spot about halfway between Wood and this side canyon. In the morning I looped around and over peak 3660 and back to camp. Lower White is brushier and slower. Was surprised to run into a group of 3 heading for the cave. I cut out a little bit of distance and elevation by following the wilderness boundary rather than going all the way to the lower white TH. The old road was cruiser and welcome after brushy rock hopping but had more cows. After crossing over 3660' and dropping back into White, packed up camp and headed out Wood. Past the wilderness boundary I located and lost the trail several times. It is getting pretty overtaken by sharp things in a few stretches. The area between Wood and the trailhead is toast but the trail is in decent shape mostly.

Another delightfully rainy day in the desert! :y:

This one was a bit of a gamble. Radar estimates showed it hadn't received as much rain as other areas, but I took a stab that there'd be flowing water given the burn scar. Despite not having closures in place like other parts of the burn, this is sort of low elevation so I figured I wouldn't be able to get back there until cooler weather to check it out.

Well, in a twist of luck, cooler weather is exactly what happened! And rain. Plenty of wonderful rain. The forecast looked reasonable, and the Flash Flood Warning in effect for the area was noted.

FR 319 is heavily rutted. Even worse than before. Unless there's a rancher that needs access or the TRAL people get involved, I can see this one settling into some extra hiking mileage. The burn here was bad and the runoff is eroding the road with every new storm. I gave up when reaching the 2260 intersection and we walked from there.

The spring area at the end of 2260 was torched, including the big cottonwoods. The whole drainage down suffered the same fate at varying levels of severity. Some of the overgrown thickets that were a challenge before are now easygoing.

Our entire hike in was in a pleasant and lightly running stream. The morning showers had given way to cloudiness and even an occasional splash of sun. When we reached the heart of the wilderness we stayed high on the south side of the creek and followed an old use path down to creek level below the narrows. All of this has burned, but of course the geology hasn't changed, and most of this desert scrub will be back soon enough.

The water was flowing strongly as we headed downstream and explored up some side drainages. Water was deep enough to require bypasses to avoid swimming. A pure delight for midsummer in the desert.

Somewhere along the line, the rain picked up again, and I donned my umbrella. We headed upstream in the creek, somewhat wary of the short stretch that would not allow for an easy exit to higher ground should the water rise quickly. A bit farther upstream we happened upon the magnificent waterfall that enters from the north. I've seen this one flowing before, and it always amazes me for the relatively small area it drains.

After a lunch break by the falls and satisfied with the survey of fire damage, we headed back up toward the top of the slots to begin our trek back to the truck. Seeing the cascade here it was evident the flow of the creek had increased and turned decidedly more turbid. There's not a huge catchment here and the flow was still quite easy for walking, enjoyable really, so we splashed on upstream. As we did so, the rain picked up considerably. I commented to 9L to be aware of the possibility the flow could increase with the heavier rain band.

We stopped at one of the small cascades along the creek to capture a photo when it appeared that a bit more water began to pour over the rocks. Seconds later, and at the same time we both heard the impending rush of water barreling down canyon and quickly climbed out of the creek and up to a safe perch. In what seemed like 15 seconds (but was actually about a minute and a half) the creek had gone from a flow of maybe 5cfs to probably over 100cfs. It crashed over the cascade we were just photographing and filled the entire creek channel we had been hiking in. We would have survived the flow had we been cluelessly unaware and not highly alert for just such an event, but the rush of seeing this occur was also quite exhilarating.

We proceeded upstream staying on the burned banks, crossing where it was narrow enough to jump, until eventually the flow had receded enough to splash in the creek bottom once again. There were more muddy drainages flowing back near the truck, but thankfully the road was still intact for the drive back out to the highway.

There's a lot of sad sights here now with saguaros and cottonwoods that will not return in my lifetime. But other parts will probably be ok in short order. And this day was one for the memory bank, not soon to be forgotten.

After reading a recent triplog decided on a return trip to upper White Canyon was due.

Road Walk A lot of loose rocks, more than I remember, probably due to the dry conditions the state is experiencing. Otherwise OK.

Upper Canyon Travel With no water in any of the pool areas we were able to stay in the upper canyon the entire way. Felt to easy not having to look for and use the by-pass routes. A couple of overgrown areas but overall in nice condition. The one negative is that cattle are overtaking this area. Had to be very attentive not to step in a cow pie.

Off-trail exploring above the canyon This is a great area to just wander and explore, taking in some great views along the way. Had some visitors over-head. Saw more cattle in the canyon floor.

Never even heard about this place until like a month ago, and I almost forgot I went out there. I followed the described route to the canyon and then scrambled my way down to the floor. Trail follows and old road to a spring that was full. After that it goes through some very small but pretty cool narrows a couple times. I climbed up to the top and then headed south with the canyon for a while which gives some real cool views down into the wilderness. I found a dry waterfall that was a good spot to make my way down into the canyon. I felt very alone down in there, like if I fell, no one would find me for a loooong time type alone. The key is, dont fall. Anyway there is some really cool bouldering and route finding in the bottom of the canyon, which makes the going real slow but quite fun. Got into where the canyon opens up and made this the lunch/ turn around point. It was so quiet, I actually fell asleep for a while and got woken up by a jet flying by that scared the :pk: out of me. Plus a stop for tacos on the way back = an excellent day.

i had a saturday off, so john and i wanted to do something interesting for the weekend
he suggested white canyon, which we had both expressed interest in previously
looked at some different options and decided to follow @hikerdw's loop of wood and white canyons
easy access to starting point in my vehicle just off 177
got going around 0630
mostly flat walking to start with, through damp fields of wildflowers
some easy off trail led over to wood canyon
we took our first detour trying to find wood spring
found an actual trail though wood canyon
at some point left that trail and went over to a drainage that led to white canyon
very scenic area at this confluence
a short hike to the bat cave, where we had a snack break
climbed out of the canyon to the west, and took a needlessly random detour back over to the upper part of white canyon
some fun little narrow slots to climb up
found white water spring, which was overflowing with good clear water
cooled off our faces and arms before the climb out on the road
abundant wildflowers and good views of the surrounding wilderness throughout
nice sampler of the area
decided to see how close we could get to the white canyon trailhead, then found a good campsite nearby
almost a full moon and not too cold - i always like an opportunity to practice camping
a good view of battle axe with our sunday morning coffee before hitting white canyon

Kelly took Saturday off work so we set off for a two day adventure. The drive to the hike from the valley went by quickly. It's really not that far past Superior to get there.
We saw a variety of cool rock formations, flora, fauna, and flowing water throughout the day. Thick foxtail grass covered much of the route, so if you like to see where you are stepping try this hike another time.
We opted to check out a few of the side attractions along the way, like springs and the bat cave, and took plenty of pictures (Tibber mode). Many off trail miles were covered making us glad to finish up for the day, enjoy a cold beverage, then set up a camp site with great views near the lower end of White Canyon. Beautiful quiet evening was relaxing. Excellent first day of our adventure. :)

Since we tried Joe's lower Route into W C last time, ( and got watered out ) thought we'd try Mr Grasshopper's route for his W C upper route. It was great, the views were fantastic, weather beautiful, and great company. Wanted to give Brad a hike before he went back to MN for a few weeks. Maybe when he returns we can get Joe's Hike accomplished.

Oregon_Hiker
Back in Nov-2008 HAZ-Topohiker(Ken) and I first hiked up [ White Canyon ] to the preferred upper canyon areas from the main Southern Park/TH Start. I really enjoyed this amAZing, scenic, remote, wilderness area and wanted to do a return trip(s) but this approach just had too much boulder hopping and was too much work for me to reach the more scenic and remote Upper Canyon areas.

I first became interested in this SW/NE approach, alternate off-trail hike in/out to this uppermost "White Canyon Wilderness" area back in year 2011 when HAZ-Sun_Hiker signed-up for a published group hike led by someone whom I believe was not a HAZ member. Sun_Hiker later posted her GPS Route & Photoset from 2/12/11 which needed some clean-up editing before I felt comfortable attempting the hike on my own but the idea of another hike in option was a 👍 for me!

Six+ years ago, on 2/15/12 I invited HAZ-AZLumberjack(Jack) to join me for an innagural hike to validate this "White Canyon Upper - SW Approach FR319". We had a great day, my newly edited GPS Route was good, and on 2/22/12, I issued a new HAZ- Trail/Hike Guide for others to hopefully also enjoy.

After HAZ-JB & Group's recent Nov'18 loop hike to this area, my interest in a return trip was again "spurred" :D

Oregon_Hiker (Larry), RedRoxx44 (Letty), and myself planned this hike today, 12/9/18 in conjunction with Letty being in the area and overnight on Saturday. Another awesome day for a White Canyon Wilderness revisit! Unfortunately, Letty had some unplanned last minute vehicle problems and was not able to join us.. sorry we missed you!

Updated Hike Notes:
.. The drive-in on FR319 to a right turn unsigned, easy to miss FR2260 to the hike recommended Park/TH Start (for the last .4 mls) is now strictly 4-Wheel Drive / High Clearance, narrow, rutted, & rocky (if planning a visit, it is recommended to download and follow these posted GPS Route Driving directions- [ gps route ] )

.. From the TH Start, it took us (Senior Citizens) ~2.5hrs to reach the 1st scenic White Canyon Overview area(s) and I must admit that the long, rocky, drainage wash with some by-pass routes "Out-Of" required (see my gps route WPs), both Out and Back (up hill), was kind-of a slog (gets kind-of old), but still worth it!;

This hike took us down White Canyon from FR319 for about 2.8 miles then up to some great views overlooking the canyon from the east side. The last 0.3 miles drive to where we parked on FR319 had some rough partially washed out sections requiring high clearance 4x4 so if your ride doesn't have that capability plan on adding about 0.6-0.8 easy round trip miles to this hike. The first 0.9 miles follows a 4x4 road down to White Water Spring where it ends. From their the hike follows the stream bed in the bottom of the canyon for 2 miles with about 3 bypasses around some rough sections of the stream bed. We were following the official gps route for this hike which if you follow it closely will help locate the bypass routes. There are some minor brush and cactus confrontations on these bypasses and a few of the bushes have thorns including some catclaw. There was a trickle of water coming out of the spring, just enough to keep the metal water trough full. The creek bed was mostly dry so no problems keeping our feet dry. Fresh cattle sign was abundant but fortunately we never stepped in any. Never saw any of the beasts, they were being as shy as the wild critters who we also didn't see.

Good views start at the beginning of the hike and just keep getting better, especially after climbing out of the canyon to the east rim. Following the east rim of the canyon provides relatively easy off-trail access to what are probably some of the best views in this wilderness.

Joe suggested we get back to this area and it'd been on my list for a revisit.

Dropping into the meat of White Canyon is easiest and best (IMO) off FR319. After a short road walk for all but the toughest of 4 x 4's, It starts tamely enough at White Water spring. At the 3 mile mark, the fun begins. The canyon drops off too far to continue, so it's time to go up to start really enjoying the geology.

There's no other place I've been that is like this area. It's stark but really interesting. Views of Battle Axe and back down into White Canyon, never make you loose interest. We dropped back in and wandered down canyon to try to find a new way up the other side. It took awhile, but after sending out a test Karl, he found us a pretty sweet route up.

The plan from here was to lunch up top across from Battle Axe. The contour we took up was not panning out and we took lunch at the Height of Light with four of our bovine friends.
View from Height of Light :next: [ youtube video ]
After a check of time and miles remaining, we adjusted our activities and headed back down into White Canyon.

Travel back up canyon was slow, mainly because of the scenery. Karl felt the need for a swim at one point, so he forced Joe and I into a break. We checked out the Bat Cave and then made the final push back.
Bat Cave :next: [ youtube video ]
The transitions from White Canyon to Wood Canyon was a bit tricky, but worked out.

Wood Canyon is probably a one and done for me (compared to what's available right next door at White Canyon) , but it helped complete the loop and get'er done before dark.

I'll be back. There's unfinished business there.

We had a great loop planned that Bruce put together. It was a bit modified but possibly for the better and we managed to see the main attractions. We dropped into White Canyon early on and ventured downstream passing a spring and some narrow sections. Eventually we hit a large pour off that we had to exit the canyon to get around. However, it was well worth the re-route with great geology and views all the way. Eventually we dropped back into White Canyon and enjoyed the scenery along with some nice pools. Followed the canyon for another ½ mile before exiting again. We found a cool exit route that I wasn’t sure would go but persistence prevailed and was able follow the exit all the way to the rim.

Once out of the canyon we hiked up a ridgeline to Height of Light survey marker where we had lunch with a view and a group of cows that seemed to own the ridge. After lunch we followed another route back into White Canyon exploring a different section. We went by the bat cave which Bruce had scouted on a previous trip. The cave is perched up in the cliff just above the canyon and was fun little scramble except for the pile of bat guano but what do you expect in a bat cave :)

We continued up canyon until we reached another side canyon and the eventual exit. Nice pools in this section and some fun rocky climbs to keep our attention. It was about 3pm when we still had over 6 miles to go and some off trail in the canyon. But we managed to make short work of the tough terrain and crossed a saddle over into Wood Canyon. Once in Wood Canyon the going got much faster with wide open space despite still being off trail. Eventually we picked up some trail passing by Crucifixion Tank and Black Hill Tank on the way back to the vehicle making it just before dark. Great hike and awesome area!

Bruce modified his 2016 masterpiece loop after I got the White Canyon bug. Passed a couple hunter camps heading in. Near record October rainfall has [ Turpentine Bush ] dotting the entire area with yellow!

4 miles went by quick. Then the guys worked overtime scouting routes I could handle. Karl rolling 55%-Genius 45%-Luck deciphered a route up a steep wall skirting disneyland terrain to freedom.

Small pools of water and narrow passages is the obstacle course in a nutshell. We had a longer than typical break then another where Karl went for a swim... seriously. Opted to show Karl the bat cave.

Route finding and such ate up the clock. We latched on to the new mission... tackle 6+ miles in 3 hours before natural light gave way to a dark chilly night. Karl picked up the pace and it panned out.

I've avoided creeks and canyons since my left arm and hand can no longer catch a fall or balance quick. It went about as expected. This type of hike takes a lot more energy. Started eating more 2 days ahead of the hike and easily consumed 3 times the calories vs 14.5 miles on trail. Fine for half. Then went from dragging to virtual zombie. Held back on aspirin and 5hr knockoff until the final few miles. Zapped back to life, the sun dropped, slow terrain gave way to virtual highway fields and wide flat draws. Love this place. Zero hikers encountered. Typical for the trailless remote backcountry.

A really nice loop hike connecting Wood Canyon with Upper White Canyon. I threw this loop together about a year ago and then last week while visiting another hiking site read a trip report on basically the same route. I'm in, let's go.

Saw lots of new areas which is always fun to do. Did some exploring and noted areas that require a return trip to check out closer. We both really enjoyed Wood Canyon. Saw no others the entire day, weather was great, flowing water. Great hike.

I was a bit tired from my New Year's weekend hikes but didn't want to let a day off go to waste, especially not with all the water that has been flowing around the desert mountains lately.

White Canyon has been on my radar since Arizona Wilderness introduced it's Crystal-Pepsi-like mind-pumpkin White Canyon Stout ... which is blonde colored but tastes like a stout. :o (Yes, I realized I wanted to visit somewhere because of the name of a beer!)

After visiting the spine and seeing 1-800-the-joey put together a big loop out here a few weeks back, it was fresh in my mind. I was hoping to see good water flowing through the falls in the canyon. I decided that the drive and miles of creek hiking from the south were a bit more than I wanted to tackle on Monday, so I chose the north route from FR319 (the hike description title should probably be renamed sometime so as to not confuse future hikers).

I almost drove all the way to the spring on FR2260, but stopped where a jeep had parked at the top of the hill. 4wd would be required to descend the hill, but primarily because of the one main switchback which has some big boulders as you make the sharp turn. The rest of it is a standard rough 4wd road. Of course, it's not a long walk, so if you don't enjoy roads like this, just park and walk the extra mile or two when you don't feel comfortable driving anymore.

The upper canyon had a light flow of water both above and below the spring, but much less than I was hoping for or expecting. I passed the jeep people as they were on their way out. They were hunting fox but came up empty on the day. To say they were shocked to see me would be an understatement. They had no idea people actually just go out here to hike and explore! : rambo :

The upper canyon is easy to travel in and a couple of well-worn bypasses leave the creek bottom and are marked with cairns. When I reached the top of the box, I stayed on the north side and looked for a way down to the bottom. Along the way I found a very nice 40 foot waterfall from a side drainage. It was interesting that this drainage was flowing more than the much larger main drainage!

Once I had worked my way to the bottom, I attempted to head back upstream toward the fifteen foot falls in the box. There was a short swimmer that I couldn't bypass, and I waded in hoping to find a reasonable way across. Nope. I stripped down and jumped in! With air temps in the low 50s, calling the water refreshing would be an understatement! :o

Unfortunately, at the end of the pool is a small 2 foot cascade, but unable to touch bottom and the water flow hitting me from above, I couldn't manage to climb up. Defeated, I retreated to the beach and put on some warm, dry clothes.

Next I climbed back upstream a bit looking for a descent down the western wall. About halfway down, I felt uncomfortable with the unsure footing on a short pitch I would have to downclimb, and I retreated back up. Next I tried to crab butt-scoot down the angled slope of sheer rock adjacent to a vertical wall. This worked remarkably well and I reached the bottom of the box just below the fifteen foot waterfall. Sadly, it wasn't that exciting. ](*,)

I explored downstream in the box to the cascade and pool that had turned me away earlier. I enjoyed this section. On the way out, I learned quickly that getting up the sloped rock I had descended was not a good plan. But the pitch I didn't want to climb down earlier proved to be much more reassuring on the ascent and I was out of the box in no time.

Not wanting to return the way I had already been, I headed downstream looking for an exit point on the east side of the canyon. I saw one spot that looked promising, but decided to continue downstream and explore a bit more with the time I had remaining. There's a horseshoe bend in a narrow slot with high vertical walls before the canyon opens up about a quarter mile below the box.

Here I made my exit, encountering an obstacle consisting of about a 15 foot vertical layer that included a dryfall near the top of the drainage. There was a crack on the right that was nicely protected from exposure and allowed me to get above it with a short class 4 scramble.

Once above the canyon, it was just a pleasant stroll along the edge of the canyon, taking in the views from a variety of outlook points. Once I had returned above the box, I descended this side into the canyon above the fifteen foot falls, discovering yet another fall, this one in a narrow slot of smooth rock that dropped into a nearly hidden circular pot.

For the most part, I was able to stay in the canyon from here back to the top with the exception of one narrow section that would have required me to get wet again, which I chose not to do. With darkness approaching, I made swift time on the return, getting back to my truck in less than an hour.

White Canyon, you've got me hooked. Can't wait to get back and check out the lower part and explore some more. The geology out here is awesome! So is the stout! :y:

Six years ago while hiking the old route of AZT 16 in this area, Joe made a comment that stuck with me. "I don't know why they didn't route the AZT through White Canyon. That area is incredible." That always stuck with me, but it took me this long to draw something up that visited this area.

An easy mile road walk gets you into the northern arm of White Canyon, close to White Water Spring. This canyon gets more impressive the farther you get in.

At 3 miles in, you will have a decision point. Staying in the canyon (without equipment) is not an option, as we'd find out later. We went up to the left and enjoyed the views into the canyon from above. We ultimately dropped back in at mile 4.75. There is plenty to explore up top..

THIS IS A SPECIAL AREA

We continued down the canyon until we hit the FR and then continued to the old routing of AZT 16. After some lunch, we made the decision to climb straight up to unnamed Peak 3635. It was steep and loose, but not too bad. Then it was a matter of following the ridge line back down to White Canyon.

The plan was to follow the canyon back to where we'd originally gotten out of it. Plenty of water and small falls, pools, and a few areas we had to traverse around. Plenty of geology lessons and even a bat cave.

Getting close, we came to a point we could not get through. We contemplated swimming it, but luckily decided against it. We went high right to get out, with no luck. Back down in the canyon, we went high left, and this worked. Looking at the bypass area from above, there were a few swimmers and no friendly exits.

The rest was just pushing daylight getting back to the Truck. It was a chilly 41 when we finished.

This is a sweet area to explore.....

Bruce put this loop together by routes from Hank & Mark. When I saw it I knew it would be a great hike. While Brown's Peak got me hiking, White Canyon taught me how to sing.

Bruce drove in 0.4 miles off SR177 on FR319 to the safe 2WD parking. The road was recently graded. Arnett Creek was already starting a narrow yet deep crevice across the road so some may prefer to walk it.

43 degrees and windy, with a predicted high of 54. I started off wearing three long sleeve shirts and pants due to the temps. Pants are a good idea if you don't like any scratches. 10 degrees warmer and I'd be in shorts. It rained a bit last night and there was a very light flow in a couple area. All avoidable if careful. Some of the terrain was easy scrambling.

4-5 miles is road or use trail. Over half of the road walk is within the wilderness and very scenic. The majority of the hike is off trail through the canyon. The high canyon walls of White Canyon are impressive. Especially the eastern wall which is white. The water sculptured rock and narrows in multiple areas are spectacular. Any one of them would be worthy of a hike alone. 2 miles is out of the canyon to ride a ridge back to make the loop. It is a hearty 600 ft climb to the highpoint 3635 atop the ridge. Excellent views down the entire ridge. This loop is just a smorgasbord of bells and whistles. The less exciting final 2.8 miles went by quick.

Geology rocks a very short, semi boring, video starring Off_trail_Eagle.

Decided to start the new year off right so I tagged along with my dad and brother to a hike in White Canyon Wilderness. New area for me and this hike is definitely a favorite. Great scenery and the view of the canyon was breathtaking. Pictures don't do it justice. Didn't run into anyone else until we were on the road back where we passed a few who were heading out to hunt.
