Wanted to get back to the 100 Top Hikes list, and go out with Michelle. This was the perfect day for this hike! Weather was absolutely amazing. Lots of deer out today as well. Did a figure 8 loop off of Kent-Bog Spring, with Super Trail and another unnamed trail or two.

The dry water trough has a sign labeling it Dutch John Spring, but I took the trail past that to where the spring is on the topo map. There's a small slickrock section with water flowing down it and I sat there and watched some Mexican Jays. After that, the canyon narrows up and the trail heads uphill and to the left. I'm not sure how much farther it goes as the spring was my turnaround point.

After a day of driving around taking photos of this and that, I decided to spend the night at this fine little campground in Madera Canyon. The day's round of showers and thunderstorms had ended, so it was a pleasant quiet night, with only a few other campers. :D Bug activity was not bad and minimal critter action was noted, with the exception of a lone deer that must be a regular, and the usual curious morning Jays.

Met up with my hiking buddies Carey and Yolanda in Green Valley to go hike this loop in Madera Canyon. Lots of trees and leaves. Running water along the trail. Nice loop.

Our first camping trip in 9 years :y: After a couple of weeks of preparation of going through stored gear, buying new gear, and organizing it, Eloise and I were able to depart for an overnighter, leaving the house at about 2:30 pm and arriving about an hour later at the campground. Essentially, this trip was a dry run for more and longer trips in the future.

This was our first time camping here (and Arizona). A few campsites were available. Those of you familiar with Bog Springs know that the campground road is a single loop, which climbs as you go to the rear of the loop, and descends as you exit the campground. The single toilet facility is near the top of the loop. We picked a spot at the at the lower elevation, farthermost away from the bathroom.

What does this all mean? Well, being almost ten years older, now on blood pressure meds (basically a diuretic), and having to drink massive amounts of water to fight off the formation of kidneys stones (especially after 12 stones in 2013 and the resulting 3 lithotripsies), one must carefully consider one's distance and access to a toilet while choosing a campsite, not at 1 AM in the morning when the bladder is screaming for relief, and it's a 1/4 mile walk uphill to el bano. :( And at 2:30 AM. And at 4 AM. And at ...

Otherwise, we had a great time. I was happy with my gear organization, the new Mountain Hardware Optic 3.5 tent was a joy (see short review below), the weather was great, and I didn't make my wife mad at me. I was able to get a short hike in on Tuesday (5/26, separate trip report, Dutch John Spring Trail), and we spent a couple of hours watching birds on the observation deck at the Santa Rita Lodge.

Dinner was at Beyond Bread on the way home.

Total round-trip mileage: 102.0 miles.

GEAR REVIEW: Mountain Hardware Optic 3.5 Backpacking Tent. Described as a 3+ person tent. It was spacious and quite airy, given its four-sided mesh screen construction. There are doors on adjoining sides that roll back to offer huge view and easy access; the rainfly covers these adjoining doors (see photo set) to offer easy access and ventilation. It was easy to put up and take down. The only negative is that the seam on the rainfly tore at the only tie-down point that was not reinforced as well as every other tie-down point on either the rainfly or tent. Odd.

QUESTION: Has anyone ever visited the Old Missile Helipad Site just outside the Madera Canyon entrance. It is marked with official "Area Closed" signs and seems to still be owned by the federal government, but there seems to be some kind of activity going on there on the Google Satellite view.

Just a quick overnight camping trip to get away from the trick or treaters. Very breezy the entire time, as a strong storm system approaches. When I arrived at the campground around 5 o'clock the temperature was 70 degrees and it it dropped only to 64 by morning. That insane warmth for this time of year is about to come to an abrupt end. Oh yeah, I hate :pk: halloween. wysiwyg

We had a Time Limit on Saturday as I had to be in Tucson later in the Afternoon, so we chose this Hike...Nice Elevation and with our Photography lust, probably the right Mileage too.... As it turned out, it was a perfect choice... :)

Started up a Road, climbing in elevation right away, and soon hit the Intersection...Randy and I had agreed to do it clockwise and come downhill on Kent...I left Randy behind a little while he stopped, and we met up close to Bog Spring...Nice Uphill, I've been needing that...Went down to the Spring and took a Break, hoping some of the Birds I was hearing would come in, but they stayed up in the Canopy for the most part... :(

After the Break we continued on up and up and finally started the descent to Kent Spring...This was a nice little Riparian area as well...Lots of Sycamores... :D Took a break here as well and had a Snack and some Gatorade. We then continued on down and down and down on the Road...Almost back to the Campground and we took a side Tour so Randy could show me a Cabin that the Forest Service rents out...Pretty Cool...And then, we were back at the Campground with time to spare...

This was a good little Hike with some Elevation to stretch the Lungs and Legs, through some really pretty Country with great views along the Top of the Loop...The Trails were in immaculate shape...A Runner could easily do this Loop...I could definitely see doing this one again with a few side Trips when there's more time... :D

Thanks for the Company Randy!!!

Last minute request from Pam about doing something down in my area for of all things, the holiday weekend. This was in conjunction with a class she was attending at the Desert Museum Saturday evening. The logical choice was Bog Springs, so she wouldn't have a huge drive to and from the class. This worked out very well and we didn't get blasted by any monster storms, though it was tropical storm level humid down there. :o Full blown late summer wet and wonderful conditions prevailed (chiggers and all). She got to see this place at its best! :D

Not many campers Friday night, but full by Saturday afternoon. We got a couple of nice hikes in and enjoyed a fun evening Friday. I grilled a steak Friday evening and had a fine breakfast Saturday before hiking. Had to make a run to Green Valley to get more ice Saturday afternoon as Pam was headed to the Desert Museum. Got lazy and stopped and got pizza, which served as my dinner Saturday night (and breakfast Sunday morning). :) Sat around Saturday evening in the dark drinking beer and eating pizza until about 10 PM, thinking I'd wait for Pam to get back to camp. But decided to call it quits and head for the tent instead, not wanting to disturb the peace when she returned. Right call. The carrying on of others in the campground that evening provided lots of entertainment anyway! The weather was quiet, which was kind of a downer, as it would have been nice to have had a light show thrown in the mix.

Sunday morning, we took our time breaking down camp. Pam was going to go to Patagonia Lake to see a Booby :o , and I suggested she see two other lakes in the vicinity (Parker Canyon & Pena Blanca). That way she could see that fine country down around the Canelo Hills and northwest of Nogales. She followed me through Box Canyon over to highway 83 and down to Sonoita. At this point I realized her photo stops would make this too long of a day for me, so I cut loose and headed home. I'm waiting for more triplogs to see where all she ended up going. So much to see; I'm sure she was blown away by what she saw. :)

I had a blast down there, holiday weekend and all! :y: Hope you did too Pam!
