A few people had never been to La Barge so off we went. But definitely will need to come back when there’s more water.

Wanted to see how it felt to do the Battleship in August. It was hot.

Started around 4AM from Boulder Canyon Rec Area. The "exit" lane at Canyon Lake Marina was open, but there was a big sign stating that "Day Use Full", so I guessed that they were using those spots for something else this weekend and didn't try it. Anyways, first few miles were dark and hot, ran into a group of two without lights near the overlook, wished them good morning and got no reply. Maybe some grumpy night photographers? Made quick work of the drop & Boulder Canyon, sunlight didn't touch me until I was on the stern of the 'ship.

It was fun scrambling around on the Battleship, and I was making okay time on the way to the peak, though I did turn around short. The heat & humidity was giving my sweat glands the workout of their lives, and the constant climbs, shimmies, and scouting, with sweat dripping in my eyes, was less than fun. Plus, there was a whole kettle of vultures who had already claimed the summit and I didn't want to turn them into a wake. Made easy work of the return and headed down to La Barge Box to change up the return.

The descent into La Barge box was not well defined until it was very well-defined... guessing I just missed the "start" somewhere. Made it to an upper pool and sat, munching on some breakfast-y jerky, when a lean bear came from upstream. After a few photos I started shouting at it, though it was not deterred until we were less than 15' apart, then it finally skedaddled. It wasn't acting aggressive at all, it was just less fearful of humans than I'm used. First Superstition bear I've seen and it was all the way down in La Barge!

Adrenaline freshly pumped, I headed down the creek, rock-hopping and singing songs in case the bear was waiting for me. Time passed quickly and soon I was hauling out in the hot sun, which quickly took a toll. Even with the slight breeze it was a tough last few miles, and I was cramping and feeling nauseous by the end. Brought 5L, most mixed with electrolytes, and used every drop.

It had been over 2 years since I had been to Battleship, so I decided to hike it again while the weather was still cool.

We started early from the First Water TH, and did not see anyone until we got to the Boulder Canyon Trail, where a few people were camping.

There was water flowing in all of the creek crossings along Boulder Canyon, but we were able to keep our feet dry by taking advantage of some strategically placed rocks.

It was the usual fun climb up to Battleship, though I did not appreciate the wind up there. After coming back down Battleship, we went over to La Barge Box and had a nice lunch break. There was lots of water in the Box -- more than I have ever seen there.

We then made the long hike back to the TH.

It was a nice day to be out there, although the wind was a bit cold in the morning. I was surprised at how few people were out on this nice day.

I've been to Lower La Barge a few times and usually prefer hiking new places, but ishamod and TboneKathy had never been to La Barge, and I'd had my eye on Peak 2830 for a while, so this ended up being a good local option. We started from Boulder Canyon Trailhead just after sunrise and started up the hill, with great views in both directions...Canyon Lake behind us and then Battleship, Weaver's Needle, and many other peaks ahead of us. From that angle, Peak 2830 looks like a narrow ridge of rock that would be far more challenging to climb than it turned out to be.

We stayed on Boulder Canyon #103 around the west side of Battleship, and as 2830 came back into view, it looked steep but much more climbable from the side profile. There were plenty of people out on the trails, including some campers near the Second Water intersection, then more hikers/backpackers along Boulder Canyon near Battleship.

We took a short break before leaving the trail, and TboneKathy waited below while ishamod and I started the climb up to the peak. The lower part of the ascent had a lot more loose rock, but the steeper part of climb was more solid, and the brush wasn't overly cumbersome...just a few spots where we stopped to trim branches out of the way. Route finding really wasn't an issue--there was one main chute that took a fairly direct shot at the saddle between 2830 on the left and 2803 on the right that provided the easiest path up. It was a fun scramble, comparable to Picketpost in places.

[ youtube video ]

Once we hit the saddle, we followed the ridge left toward 2830. That stretch was reminiscent of a miniature Battleship, following a narrow ridge to the north, scrambling toward the peak...in this case, while overlooking Battleship. As someone else pointed out in a triplog, there's a surprising amount of bighorn sheep droppings up there. The actual summit and the register sit on top of a few large boulders that we scrambled up, and the peak provides a unique perspective on Battleship, looking down the east side from slightly above, and great views looking straight down into La Barge.

[ youtube video ]

We enjoyed the views from the top, took some pictures, and signed the register, which was placed in 2010 and refers to Peak 2830 as "Destroyer Peak"...I assume that's an unofficial name keeping with the naval theme given the proximity to Battleship. There were lots of familiar HAZ names in the register, and it looks like the peak has been gaining in popularity, with a lot more visits in the last few years, the most recent of which was a group of five earlier this month.

Someone had left a partially-empty bottle of Bullet bourbon at the summit, and ishamod took a drink before we started down. With TboneKathy waiting below and a stop at La Barge still planned, we didn't take the time to go over to 2803 and headed back down the way we came up. Ishamod narrowly missed a potentially bad fall on the way down, but some catclaw stopped him from sliding farther, possibly marking the the first time anyone has been thankful for catclaw...and providing a handy reminder that alcohol and steep off-trail hiking may not be a wise combination :).

Back safely at the bottom, we backtracked to the unofficial trail toward the south end of Battleship and followed it over the saddle and down into La Barge. We'd seen plenty of people around Battleship, but we had the canyon to ourselves. There was some nice fall color in the leaves, and some of the pools were full of very active minnows. We took a short break in the shade before we headed out.

We hiked back out via La Barge Creek, where there was a lot more fall color, then reconnected with #103. Even in the late afternoon, there were a lot of hikers on the trail, probably hiking in to catch the sunset. Our timing worked well, and we got to enjoy the setting sun as we finished the hike and wrapped up just before dark.

Looking down from Battleship into LaBarge canyon looks like some crazy remote fortress that takes a real off trail adventure to access...that is not the case. My friend told me she sees people on "the beach" (at La Barge box entrance) all the time & I still didn't believe her. We hiked from the marina up Boulder Canyon trail and followed La Barge Creek at the split, along the east side of Battleship. We ran into one camper along La Barge and then another couple still in sleeping bags enjoying the morning camped just outside La Barge box (at "the beach"). I commented to my friend that she was right and I was surprised. We explored La Barge box & owwwed and awwwed (incredible!) & as we started to head back there were probably 5 groups of campers arriving one after another. Haha funny me thinking people didn't come here! Of course they do though. The entire hike is out of this world views and the box area is a must visit spot. Probably have a better chance for privacy during the week or early early morning though. ;)

Patrick and Asia and I invited ourselves to join Bree, Allie, Jessie, Ryan, and 9L for a Battleship Summit. I did influence the selected route so we ended up starting from Boulder Canyon and doing a loop into La Barge with a nice visit to the box. A few in our group had never been up Battleship, so it was fun to introduce them to the place that toughboots ruined forever. : wink :

Not much traffic out there today, but a pair of hikers who were up there after us spooked a bighorn from the plateau below the summit. I'm sorry we missed that one today as it's been a couple of visits since I've seen sheep up there.

We took a break at the box before heading back downstream. I've never done lower Boulder, and neither had 9L, so with uncertainty ahead we opted instead to take 103 back the way we came.

Another great day in the stits.

My son and I set off from the Canyon Lake Marina just before 7 am. The “in” gate to the marina doesn’t open till 8 am, but entering through the exit gets you to the parking area.

Temps were a little chilly, but the 700 ft climb right out of the gate gets the blood pumping.

By the time we crested the initial hill, the coming dawn opened up a nice view back toward the lake with a pinkish hue on the northwestern horizon.

At the Indian paint mine, we ran into our first company—a couple of guys who were planning to hit up the Battleship. We informed them they missed their turn. We told them we were headed there, but they could also circle back on the LaBarge side. They decided to head that direction, and we parted ways.

From the paint mine to the second water trail junction was the coldest section of the hike. We still hadn’t seen the sun but were anxious to meet it past the second water junction.

About 1/4 mile before the turn up to Battleship, we met a couple more hikers who were backtracking in the opposite direction—also headed to Battleship and thinking they had missed the optimal turn up. I told them they were welcome to try their luck wherever, but suggested that the easier routes still lay further down a bit. They were convinced and trailed us to our chosen turn up—which incidentally is somewhat before the one reflected on the official HAZ route.

We were happy with our choice, which ended up being a pretty clear and well cairned route.

Clambering across the spine turned out to involve a bit more scrambling than I had recalled, but was a lot of fun.

We made it to the summit and had it to ourselves for 15 minutes or so until our trailing hikers arrived. After a bit though, we could see that Battleship was shaping up to be a popular destination on the day—with several groups making their way across the spine.

After backtracking across the spine, we swung east and dropped down into the LaBarge drainage. This was a section I hadn’t previously hiked, and it was the gem of the trip for me. The route down to the Box was clear and didn’t require any bushwhacking.

At the entrance to the Box was a large pool of water next to a fantastic camping spot. The shaded pool was a perfect reflection pond for the west-facing cliff face that was drenched in afternoon sun. We took lots of pictures and had a great time exploring up the Box. Lots of pools and plenty of water for filtering. What a cool area—definitely exceeded my expectations.

After taking in our fill of the Box, we tackled the northbound route through LaBarge. This involved a little bushwhacking, and boulder hopping, but again was more tame than anticipated.

Once we reconnected with the actual trail, we cruised back to the trailhead.

Turned out to be another great day in the Supes.

From First Water trailhead, took Second Water to Boulder Canyon, up and over the saddle to La Barge Box. Explored up the box for a bit and enjoyed seeing many small falls and flow. Looped around Battleship through the creek and then back the way we came. Great day to be out in the Supes! Overcast and tons of water. We saw many folks packing up their camps from the night before.

Since December 7, 2019 was the 78th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the bombing of the USS Arizona, it seemed fitting to do a hike up to Battleship Mountain. A small group of this did this hike by starting and ending at Canyon Lake Marina, which is my favorite way to hike up to Battleship.

We did a lasso loop hike, with the loop circling around Battleship Mountain in a CCW fashion. There was quite a bit of water in Boulder Canyon, the LaBarge Box, and LaBarge Canyon; however, we were mostly able to keep our feet dry. It was really cool to see the water running through LaBarge Box -- there were even a few small waterfalls.

The hike up on Battleship is not an easy one: route finding can be a bit of a challenge, and there are a couple of places with some challenging climbs.

This is one of my favorite hikes, and it was a great day to do the hike!

I had hike up to Battleship a couple of times before from the First Water TH, but had never done it from Canyon Lake. So I decided to change that today, and I managed to coerce Tracie, my favorite and intrepid hiking partner, into joining me.

We did the loop around Battleship in a CCW fashion. Going along the Boulder Canyon Trail was pretty straightforward. The trail was a bit rocky in places but it was in decent shape. It was another fun scramble once we got up on Battleship. While at the summit we met @DennisWilliams, who was only the second HAZer that I have met out on a hike.

After descending from Battleship, we dropped into Labarge Box and hung out for awhile. We saw a tarantula crawling across the rocks and enjoyed observing the creature for a bit.

The boulder hopping in Labarge Creek was kinda fun on the way back. There was a bit of water in the creek, which we had to dodge in a few places.

This was a fun hike, although it is longer and has more elevation gain than going from First Water.

This was right after the big snow. Been wanting to get out and do this hike for a while. We went as far as La Barge creek, and the flow was great indeed. The boss decided the stream was a bit much for crossing since we didn't bring the proper shoes for crossing the stream. so she was done :?

Maybe we can try again when the stream is not so wet.....

Still it was a great day, and the views were fantastic!

Beautiful weekend backpacking.

Day 1: Hike in about 3.5 miles from Boulder Canyon Trailhead to set up camp. Dayhike about 10.5 miles the rest of Boulder Canyon to Dutchman, up Bull Pass, across Dutchman, and back down Calvary for a loop. Lots of water in Boulder past the intersection with Cavalry.

Day 2: Dayhike about 9 miles up Battleship from Boulder and back down through La Barge. Decent amount of water back in La Barge.

Day 3: Hike out to the trailhead.

Second Water had a good amount of water too. Lots of backpackers out this weekend!

We didn't quite go all the way, as we wanted to make it out at a reasonable time and my dad was a little hesitant about some of the scrambles on Battleship. Headed down La Barge, which was enjoyable, as I had never gone back that far on previous trips. Great day for hiking and a nice hike to end the year.

1st trip
At a neighborhood music festival last weekend we made a new friend and convinced him to come on his first backpacking trip with us. Six days later he was in the car heading to the trail head... :)

Day 1 / Friday
Hit the trail from First Water at 5p. Took the loop clockwise on Second Water. Had light until we got to Second Water Canyon. Camped near Second Water Spring, around 3.25 miles from the car. Great spot, but had some mice this time. Hang up your stuff.

Day 2 / Saturday
Packed up in the morning, finished off Second Water and headed south on Boulder Canyon. Took the cairned route up and over the southern Battleship Saddle and down into La Barge Box. Snagged the campsite and filled up at the pools around the bend, which were clear and deep.

Made our way back up to tackle Battleship Mountain. My first time up there. It's intimidating from below and a couple spots as you go are of the "don't look down" :scared: variety, at least for me. Ate lunch on the way and half our group went back, while my buddy and I continued on to the summit. Definitely a highlight of the trip.

Around sunset a couple came up La Barge Canyon with their 3 dogs. They ended up camping in the box, just around the bend. Must have found a solid flat spot back there.

Day 3 / Sunday
We decided to loop out by finishing off Boulder Canyon south and taking Dutchman Trail back to the car at First Water. It was a nice and sunny day; I was definitely feeling the Battleship hike from the day before. Sections of Boulder Canyon Trail were a bit grown over; I would recommend long pants.

Estimating around 16 miles for this loop including Battleship. Nice to be able to hang out, camp and make the summit with day packs. Another excellent trip to the Supes! :y:
