Needed to get outta Flagstaff for the day, so my daughters and grandkids went to do Doe Mountain. Unfortunately, we go to the turn to go up and found it close...we then scooted west on the Aerie and hit the cockscomb for a complete loop of Doe Mountain. My grandson Daniel was a bit cranky, but otherwise a beautiful day, with beautiful people.

My bike buddies Carey and Dan joined me in Sedona to ride this excellent loop. I was surprised to find parking available at the Mescal trailhead at 9am, but it was a Thursday. I can tell you that there is currently construction going on along Dry Creek road near Devil's Bridge - the shoulder is being closed to parking south of the turnoff to the Devil's Bridge trailhead. We rode Mescal north to Canyon of Fools, Dawa, Aerie, Deadmans Pass, Long Canyon, and returned on Chuck Wagon. Perfect temps and excellent trails!

Decided after yesterday's debacle, some easy-to-follow trails would be in order. Long Canyon has been on the list for a bit, and it seemed like good Sedona weather, so decided on that this morning (my friend literally showed up at my place, and I said, "I was thinking Mazatzals, Supes, or Sedona, what sounds good?"). Last minute decisions are great.

Anyways, we parked near Boynton TH, along the road, and started up over Deadman's Pass. Everything from here up to where Long Canyon takes a little jog north is pretty flat, easy jogging. After the north jog the scenery gets like 10 times better. Colors were popping near the end of the trail.

At the official trail end, there are a few different canyons you can explore. We walked up the one to the east (towards Maroon Mountain), some vegetation and scrambling involved. Curious whether one could get up to Maroon from there, but it looked like a pretty steep scree slope farther up ahead.

Way down was fast and easy, took a detour around Mescal Mountain. Mascal trail was good fun.

Belated post. Ended up doing this hike/run in the afternoon. I was on a time crunch (family wanted to go out to dinner - Javelina Cantina :) ) so I was trying to knock this trail out in an hour. Unfortunately I am not the man I would like to envision myself as, so the run and trail fell a little short of my goals. Started from the Boyton TH around 5pm. Still pretty toasty (100+) especially for Sedona. This was my first time using this TH. Nice. There was parking for about 15 cars, a bathroom and an unshaded picnic table. This is a fee parking area $7 a visit (year long pass is the way to go). The Aerie trail takes off near the restrooms and heads off to the south. The trail quickly crosses Boyton Pass Rd as it makes it way towards Doe Mountain. This first mile was new to me. It is relatively flat but has some nice twists and turns that looked ideal for bikers. As it approaches Doe Mnt it does several switchbacks gaining elevation gradually. The trail swings to the west side of Doe Mnt and it gets about 1/3 of the way up the mountain. My hope was to jog the whole trail in an hour and if not that, go in for 1/2 hour and turn around. Came up about .2 miles short at a point where the trail crosses a road that leads to a gated community (with some very nice homes and some unexpectedly spectacular views). Since I had done this portion of the Aerie previously on other loop hikes I wasn't completely devastated by turning around prematurely. Returned following the same route, doing more hiking than jogging. Had the trail to myself except for a couple of bikers who were just starting out as I was finishing. Also, saw a fast moving snake that was just blur in the brush.

Went up to Sedona today for a mtb bike ride with SCA. Found many trail heads closed with a big "STAY HOME" sign. Was planning on parking at Mescal, but everything along Long Canyon road was closed. Drove over to Fay Canyon and parking there was open. Made an impromptu plan B and hit the trails. Fantastic day. Also rode Canyon of Fools - that was FUN!

Ran a big loop of trails, dirt and paved roads with enough hills to tax my legs. Felt pretty good overall.
